Subject: HELP: Collisions slowing down network to Linux file server
Date: Fri, 26 Feb 1999 14:35:47 -0500
Greetings all, I hope someone can offer a suggestion on the problem I'm
having...
I'm running a 100 Megabits/sec network using a Linux box (RedHat 5.2 with
Samba 2.0.2) as a file server so that Win95 workstations can share
data/files. Some times, the transfers are extremely slow due to excessive
collisions (as seen on the hub). This also occurs when using a Win95
workstation to copy a file on a server share to another share on the server.
I've tried:
1) replacing the network card in the server machine
2) replacing the network card in the workstation(s)
3) using a different network cable
4) using a different connection port on the hub
5) using a different hub
6) isolating the server and a single workstation to be the only computers on
the hub (network)
7) re-installing Linux
Nothing helps. Currently, I have a NetGear FA310TX card (DEC chipset) in the
server and using the Tulip driver. SMC EZCard 1211 in some Win95
workstations and some with 3Com's Fast Etherlink XL. The hubs are LinkSys
EtherFast 10/100 Auto-Sensing Hubs (all ports running at 100Mbps)
The collisions do not occur between Win95 workstations, only when
transfering to/from the Linux machine. What's going on?
Please help
Curtis

I use cyrix 686 P150+ win95/linux dual boot, 32 MB mem, esoniq vivo sound
card. I found the machine is slow in following app:
(1)realaudio 5.0 under linux, it takes a lots of CPU load and slowdown
machine.
(2)winamp mp3 player under win95. I hardly can surf web with netscape while
playing the music. Realaudio under win95 is not that bad.
The slowdown is due to poor sound card, I bet. However, a slow Cyrix FPU does
not help either.

The S3 Trio 3D, isn't supported yet by XFree86.
I have one, and only way I could get it to work, is by upgrading to
kernel 2.2 and setting up the Vesa Frame Buffer device, and then using
the XF68FBcon server. But there is no Accel this way, and no way to
change resolutions on the fly.
I can provide detailed instructions if you REALLY want to do this, but,
it's not for the newbie, requires a Kernel upgrade, recompile, install
etc.. Downloading a new X server, making a new XF86Config file, plus
some mucking around with the kernel boot settings to work.
I do believe that the commercial Accelerated X servers supports the
Trio3D natively though, and that Xfree86 4.0, when it's released, should
be supporting this card as well.

I'm having good luck with Matrox Millenium G200 (AGP). You need the

NEVERMIND...
I stopped whining for thirty seconds, made the devices, and it all works.
SO: DIGI PC/Xe is actually so simple...I was looking for a more difficult
solution.
If you compile version 2.0.36, or wherever digi support began, and compile
it in...
and then do a
mknod cud0 c 22 0
mknod cud1 c 22 1
etc for as many ports
and
mknod ttyD0 c 23 0
mknod ttyD1 c 23 1
etc, that's all there is to it.
The digi web/ftp site, commendable as it is for them to provide Linux
info...is WAY out of date.
but thanks for putting up with my whining!

I have a digi pc/xe board with 8 ports. Had it working, backed up the
configs, which took a LONG time to arrive at a few years ago, and the floppy
I backed onto was bad, and I nuked the whole installation on that box...I
have nothing to show for a whole lot of research in 1996.
So...can anybody walk me thru a real world install? I have the file
4001450C.tgz, and it is unratted from /usr/include as some faq somewhere
indicated to do(on the digi ftp site). It just plain doesn't work.
digiConfig calls a menu program "dialog" which won't run, keeps exiting
saying cant't open terminal, etc, etc...just does not work. I've tried
/usr/src, and more...no good.
Now...I am running version 2.0.36 with digi enabled, and in devices ttyD and
cud are there after bootup. Do I only need to make devices for it? A small
hassle, but easy, considering I've been beating my head against the wall for
several evenings(It's ok, I wear a rug).
Looks like major number is 23 and 22 respectively from /proc/devices.
I just need some input before I spin my wheels tonight again. The bottle of

Oh man. I cannot believe I forgot this tiny basic fact. I guess I
couldn't believe *all* HD manufacturers used such a deceptive
calculation. Even with monitors they have differing standards. Though
I would be genuinely shocked to see a monitor that's 17" measured

Which is exactly the number that my self-written "disk.pl" utility
discovered when I installed this s.o.b.!
Question.... is there any justification for buying a *second* 17.2gb
drive? :) Oh wait I need a PII-450 first. I'm on a quest for the most
elite linux machine in the universe. So far I got it doing CD
recording, mp3 ripping, and video capturing, and 3dfx-graphics gaming,
all in one machine. I need a DVD player. Maybe I'll get an external
one.
Anyone got a computer controlled dog walking device? :)

Depending on your local situation you may be able to pick up the SPARC
version at your local Borders. Our local store at opne time had i386,
Alpha, and Sparc RedHat distributions on the shelf. At the same time
distributions from Caldera, Suse and others, plus all of the books with
multiple CD inserts.

A SB Live does not emulate any other soundcard by hardware. so your linux
box will be silent until you add a second soundcard.
a SB Awe64 gold and a SB Live work together quiet well. the awe are

I found a STUPID typo on my part. I meant to be using 46 jets, but
had typed 42 in by mistake. A simple change, and it works. Oddly
enough, this time using the esc800ih.upp as a template to create
esc740ih.upp, the colors are a bit too dark. In every other case
they've been too light.
All three major resolutions are now working. On to color tuning. On
advice from Grant Taylor, I've grabbed 'colorcir.ps' from the
Ghostscript distribution, and will try using that to tune. Any other
suggestions/contributions welcome.
