All,
The install went flawlessly except for the boot loader. I got back to
the prom and setup an alias for the linux boot disk but when I boot
(i.e. boot linux) I get "SProgram terminated"
Does anyone know what that means?
Feel free to email me directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Thanks..

You may want to check out the Linux ZIP how-to. I just
bought an ATAPI zip drive and got it working in about
five minutes...
http://njtcom.com/dansie/zip-drive.html
If it's found on startup, and SCSI emulation is working, you
should be able to do mount -t vfat /dev/sda4 /mnt/zip or
something like that. Also, try mounting it under the
IDE device, like /dev/hdc or /dev/hdd.

I did some tests a few months ago. I don't remember the results exactly, but
here are some hints:
The Linux tape driver and the streamer often have different ideas about
the current tape position. You can see this using mt(1) with command
"status" (ioctl MTIOCGET, field mt_blkno of struct mtget), which prints
Linux's idea of the tape, i.e. the driver status), and "tell" (ioctl
MTIOCPOS, field mt_blkno of strict mtpos), which queries the streamer for
the current position. The latter is only supported by some SCSI tapes
(most DAT streamers). When writing until a write error occurs (short
write), the current block number reported by the tape driver will be
greater than the block number reported by the streamer.
Yet worse, even if the software asks the streamer for the current block
number, it appears that this number is too high.
[speculations on]
This may have to do with the cache built in the streamer. When using
hardware compression, several megabytes may fit on the last inches of the
tape, e.g. if the data written consists of zeroes only. If the data is
"uncompressable", the streamer may fail to put the last blocks on the tape.
[speculations off]
May be one could patch tar to use ask the streamer for the tape position at
end of tape, but my experiments showed that reliable synchronization only
works with hardware compression and write buffering disabled. Thus, a write(2)
to the tape waits until the data has been physically written to the tape.
Unfortunately, this slows down backup by a factor of 5 to 10.
If all the above is total nonsense, please tell me, I'm willing to learn more
about tape operations :-)

I have a friend trying to read the above tapes on the above tape drive
and not having any luck. The tapes were written on an SCO xenix box
using tar. I gather the format of the tape isn't an issue as the drive
is for RHOMAT tapes. I would have to verify that they were written on a
RHOMAT drive. What would I need to do to read these tapes under linux
assuming I get it installed on his ps2. I would be using slackware
zipslack I guess for a simple install.

Try an active terminator if all else fails. Make sure the termination on the

Subject: help with IRQ assignments for PCI card (LML33 frame grabber)
Date: 16 Jun 1999 20:41:31 -0400
Does anyone know how PCs assign IRQs for PCI cards?
In particular, I've got an LML33 frame grabber (www.linuxmedialabs.com).
When I install this card, it takes an interrupt (such as IRQ 9) fine,
but other cards (such as my video or SCSI card) also take the same
interrupt. It would not work when LML33 and SCSI took IRQ 9.
I finally got it working by shuffling cards (put the LML33 in the last slot).
The following are the IRQs (from /proc/interrupts, /proc/pci):
IRQ 9: Intel SAA7116 (Matrox meteor frame grabber?),
aic7xxx (scsi),
DS21140 (ethernet card)
IRQ 10: vga (Matrox Millenium II)
IRQ 11: Zoran ZR36057 (LML33 card)
IRQ 12: PS/2 Mouse
Does anyone know the rules followed for assigning IRQs? Should each card get
its own IRQ? (Eg., is it bad to have SCSI and Ethernet using the same IRQ?)
Is there any way to control this in Bios and/or Linux?
BTW, I'm using an Asus P2L-DS (LX chipset, dual, scsi) board with Bios 1.04.
Thanks for any help,
Richard

In principle you say something like
/sbin/mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.2.10.img 2.2.10
(or whatever version of the kernel you are using).
Then you need to include a line like
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.2.10.img
in the /etc/lilo.conf entry for this kernel.
And then of course run /sbin/lilo .

Can you reboot from a cd?
If you can, it isn't a hardware problem. If you can't then maybe it is.
However, if you can get a cd to boot, you should be able to create a
recovery floppy disk.
With that you should be able to mount all your file systems. You then need
to mount the /boot file system and the / filesystem.
create a new lilo.conf that points to the right files. according to your
new floppy recovery disk.
run lilo pointing to this conf file.
it should reinstall everything just like you expect and lilo will return.
It tends to be bad to reboot linux with out properly closing down the
filesystem. You have probably lost some work.
check to see if any of your linux filesystems are full. It sounds like
that.

I had this kind of a problem and went into setup of the BIOS at boot
up of the machine. Then in PCIPNP devices setup I marked the thing
that indicated a pnp os as not. Apparently, Win 95 is pnp oriented,
but Linux is not. If the answer is marked no, then the BIOS sets up
the pnp cards and passes the settings to linux. It seems to make no
difference to Win 95. My computer has an Award BIOS

I have the same thing happen on my machine. (In my case vertical green
lines).
Its cause: a flakey video card and/or video RAM. The logging out process
probably sends some interesting reset directives that sometimes trigger the
problem.
It locks up the machine hard, usually with the disk activity light on, and
I have to cycle the power to get the machine back. With the disk activity
light solid its no wonder file corruption occurs.
My solution, I'm going to shop for a new video card. My bypass, don't log
out
unless you have to...

Booting headless is a bios problem, not a Linux problem. I have
several headless servers and the only thing I've done is to go
into the bios and set it to 'STOP ON NO ERRORS'. When the machine
boots, it may beep a few times, but it will come up. Note that on
some 486s, you will have to leave a video card in as they will not
boot without one regardless of what the bios is set to. Most Pentium
class boards don't care. None of my headless servers have any video,
keyoards, or mice attached.
If you want to monitor the system from a dumb terminal, there is
a serial console option in the 2.2.x kernels as well as a serial
lilo option. This allows you to see the bootup on the serial
terminal (no bios stuff) including the lilo prompt so you can
pick what kernel you wish. Very nice. It's also available in
the 2.0.x kernels, but you must patch. Note that this also allows
one to logon and do things if the network goes down for some
reason.

Hmmm... Null modem? As I remember, the serial port is a DCE device and
a modem is a DTE device. You're connecting two DCE devices and I don't
believe a null modem cable will work. I believe you need a serial cable
with some crossed lines; can't remember which ones at the moment. I
think that for serial to serial communication such as laplink will work.

Subject: SCSI CD-Roms - trouble
Date: Thu, 17 Jun 1999 02:17:29 GMT
Hello everyone,
I am having a bear of a time with my SCSI CD-Roms (along will all my
other win tweaked hardware) I have a Teac 32x and a Yamaha 400t cd-r
on an Adaptec 2940UW controler. It has no problems seeing them. At
least on the startup I see it find them and configure them to sr0 and
sr1. However, when my RH6 system is loaded and logged into, I can not
find a /dev/sr0 or /dev/sr1 to mount. Why is this? Also, do you have
to have media in the drive to mount? Isn't this a pain in X when you
have to mount every time you want to get something from a disk or CD?
(If you can't tell, I am new at this) I can mount my IDE 4x cdrom
which is helpful! Any help would be great!!
