Simple. Buy just about any *external* modem. (Zoom,Diamond/Supra) ect.
They'll work just fine with linux or any other non-MS OS.

I just set up an old 486 system to learn Linux with and at
the moment I only have an old Hercules Graphics non-vga
mono card. Maybe it is mga ??
It works in the textual mode, but I would like to use it
with X-Windows. I heard that it could be done. I have RH 5.1
and when I was installing it there was no choice for the
old Hercules Graphics card. The system probed the hardware,
but didn't set it up to use X-Windows.

                        Thanks

Hi!

Heard here that fic 503+ is quite unstable for linux. Which mb should I
choose then? I intend to build a linux only server - email, www, ftp on amd

Maybe it would be better to try celeron 300a and abit bh6?

Subject: Can't play Midi on Vibra 16
Date: Sun, 28 Feb 1999 13:30:12 +0000

Problem: Cannot get the midi synthesiser working properly on my on-board
sound chip.

Symptoms: e.g. Kmidi reports 'Cannot find output device'. playmidi reports no
errors, but no sound is forthcoming (I can play CDs fine)

I've read and done everything I can possibly think of, tried all the solutions I've
read here and found archived on dejanews, all to no avail.

Sound Chip = Creative Labs Vibra 16 PNP
Motherboard = Intel Triton 3
OS = Redhat 5.2 / Kernel 2.2.2

Sound is compiled as a module (SB 16 default settings).

Modules are loaded with the following lines in /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit:

isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf
cd /lib/modules/2.2.2/misc
insmod soundcore
insmod sound
insmod uart401
insmod sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1 dma16=5 mpu_io=0x330
insmod opl3 io=0x388
cd /

The relevant lines of isapnp.conf read:

(ISOLATE PRESERVE)
(IDENTIFY *)

(INT 0 (IRQ 5 (MODE +E)))

(DMA 0 (CHANNEL 1))

(DMA 1 (CHANNEL 5))

(IO 0 (BASE 0x0220))

(IO 1 (BASE 0x0330))

(IO 2 (BASE 0x0388))

When it boots, it is detected OK (from /var/log/dmesg):

Soundblaster audio driver Copyright (C) by Hannu Savolainen 1993-1996
SB 4.13 detected OK (220)
YM3812 and OPL-3 driver Copyright (C) by Hannu Savolainen, Rob Hooft 1993-1996

/dev/sndstat reads:

OSS/Free:3.8s2++-971130
Load type: Driver loaded as a module
Kernel: Linux jnana 2.2.2 #5 Wed Feb 24 17:28:47 GMT 1999 i586
Config options: 0

Installed drivers:

Card config:

Audio devices:
0: Sound Blaster 16 (4.13) (DUPLEX)

Synth devices:
0: Yamaha OPL3

Midi devices:
0: Sound Blaster 16

Timers:
0: System clock

Mixers:
0: Sound Blaster

Everything is in place, but will it play midi? Nope.

Huh? There shouldn't be any problems. Even a very basic search of
Dejanews will show that the AMD processors work fine with Linux. Your
hardware is more than likely the problem here.

I've heard the that the Promise Ultra33 is reconized fine by Linux, I'm

The Promise Fasttrak is recognized, but the individual drives in the RAID
setup are recognized separately instead of jointly as RAID is supposed to
be. Thus, I didn't contiune using this one in fear of data corruption.

Will a Sound Blaster 128 PCI work under Red Hat 5.2? I checked the hardware

looking to buy a new sound card, and I want a quality card that will work

You've hit the nail on the head, Bill. Remember that email shown at the
M$ trial in which Gates and friends were discussing how to get MORE
revenue from their software sales? Their solution: license the software
ANNUALLY! Combine that little ploy with the ID chip and your monopoly

is left to stem the tide...

Hi, all!

I have exactly the same setup and the same problem.
When I start the "printtool" to re-configure the printer,
it says none of the devices are configured. When I tried
"cp file /dev/lp0, lp1, lp2", it says "/dev/lp?: Device not configured".
Again, it prints fine in Win98. "lpunlock" didn't help for me.

Is there any other solution?

Ditto for Red Hat 5.2. I think the Serial-HOWTO (?) tells you to insert
setserial lines into one of the startup scripts. I use /etc/rc.d/rc.local

Have you checked your syslog? Chances are that you are getting DMA
timeouts when you try to play audio. There are several different
versions of the Vibra 16 and at least _some_ of them do _not_ have a
16 bit DMA channel!

Here is what I'm using to get _my_ PnP Vibra 16 to work:

# Peter's custom PnP configuration script

               (IO 2 (BASE 0x0388))
               (ACT Y)
               ))

(CONFIGURE CTL00f0/-1      # ANSI string -->Game<--
           (LD 1
               (IO 0 (BASE 0x0201))
               (ACT Y)
               ))

(WAITFORKEY)

# conf.modules
alias sound sb
alias midi opl3
options opl3 io=0x388
options sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1 mpu_io=0x330

Give this a shot and see if it works. If it does, please drop me a
line. I'd like to know how many people this fix helps...

I am using a Pioneer 36x scsi CDROM. I know now you can get faster scsi

Anyway, since I got the trayless I haven't had a scrach on any of my cd's.

else, so it doesn't matter. IF you used wsock32.dll and it werre
corrupt, you wouldn't be able to dial in! Just delete *.ska and
happy99.exe

Subject: RED HAT 5.2 INSTALLATION PROBLEM
Crossposted-To: comp.os.linux,linux.redhat

I am having a problem installing red hat 5.2 in computer labs. Most
machines are fine, but about 1/3 of the newer machines crash early in
the installation (step 1 or 2 - screen goes dark and system locks
up). Our MIS department (Novell & NT folks) say that LINUX is just
incompatible with new hardware.  That sounds like rubbish to me;
however, only machines with Pentium II processors have a problem! Is
there any basis for the hardware argument? We are using removable
hard drives and have brand new drives with nothing else on them. We
boot from floppy and install from cd. A couple machines that didn't
work did work when we used a different hard drive. We decided that
the drives might be bad and replaced them all... no change! Even
though some worked, our MIS rep sticks with the compatability
argument explaining that the ones that do work are just "lucky" to be
on the right side of the compatability border. I'm not buying it but
have nothing to offer in return.

I would appreciate any help or suggestions. Thanks in advance.

:: As far as I know, without explicit BIOS support or some external

:: I've seen some ATX systems with a BIOS which gives you a three-way

:I now have a temporary solution:

:My ATX dual-CPU motherboard doesn't have a BIOS option

:modem ring-in power up option. So what I will do is to connect
:a cheap 14400 modem to a COM port with its power not connected to
:UPS. Now, when the power resumes, the modem will be turned on
:and the motherboard will be waked up, so I don't have to
:go to the unattented server to push the power button (^^)

Subject: GUS + Linux = Error

I believe that I have successsfully installaed the PEREX drivers.
However when I try running INSGUS I get the following error message.

> blah blah
> GUS unable to get major device 14
> blah blah
> initialization of GUS failed
> daemons start - driver not present

I have NO messages written in var/log/messages.
What is major device 14 ?

I did find a reply on the internet to this problem, however I think it's
written in Hungarian
so if anyone can translate... it goes like this

>A kernelbe SEMMILYEN sound supportot ne fordits!
>Teljesen vedd ki a Sound-reszt. Esetleg meg lehet, hogy kivetted,
>es megis ezt teszi, mert modulkent volt forditva, es ugy meg be tudja
>rantani a dolgot (bar elvileg nem kene). Ekkor keresd meg a modult,
>es torold le (asszem /lib/modules/.../sound.o)

Thanks
