Just because a video TEST mode bombs does not necessarily mean that that
resolution + scan rates won't satisfactorily and safely get installed!
This happened with me on an older PC with a Number Nine Imagine 128
video card (4 MB VRAM). When I did an out-of-the-box installation of
Red Hat 6.2 (selecting Gnome workstation) and specified 1024 x 768 with
the range of H and V frequencies allowed by the card and my monitor,
running the test of the Linux installation froze the computer. But
restarting the whole thing and just going ahead and continuing without
testing was fine.
Beware, though, that you must be sure you are giving correct
parameters. Otherwise, you could damage hardware!

Hi,
I have PCTel Micromodem HSP56. I've downloaded files
on linmodems.org for this modem. After installation of
pctel module, I can't use my modem with Minicom and
everything works fine.
When I try to use Kppp, ppp deamon is killed after
connection and modem don't want to reset.
When I use setserial /dev/modem I have:
UART: 16950/954, Port: 0xec00, IRQ: 2
but modprobe pctel return nothing at all.
Maybe someone can help to configure my
winmodem?

I assume that you would be interested in playing DVD as well. In that case,
sound decoding (AC3) is more of a problem (heavy CPU power). Most hardware
decoder can't handle AC3 or even MPEG sound. That's why I am playing with the
NIST software decoder. Even with heavy optimizations (MMX and 3Dnow), the
only working setup is a dual PII 350 (MMX). A K6-2 500 (MMX and 3Dnow) is
close but not quite enough. Please email me if you need more details.

Hi:
I have a D-Link DSS-8+ switch and a RH6.2 BP6 dual Celeron PC. The switch
has a NFS file server and another Windows PC already plugged in. If I boot
the RH6.2 PC with its ethernet cable
unconnected, then plug the cable into the switch, then the switch will
recognize the PC and the PC
will be connected to the LAN and NFS mounted correctly. But if I now unplug
the RH6.2 PC, then
plug it back in again, the PC's LAN connection is lost, can't ping or be
pinged.
Rebooting the PC will hang when unmounting NFS, I have to use a hard reset.
I tried the same on my Win98 PC (unplug first then plug back), there's no
such problem (the PC will be.
connected once it's plugged in). Any clues? Thanks!

Unlock it? Often programmes will "lock" your modem (so that other
programmes see the lock and don't try to use it). If you crash minicom, it
will leave it locked. Or another programme may have done so. At least for
minicom, the lock file is in (well, on my system) /var/lock/ and the file
is LCK..modem. If you have such a file, delete it.

Hi all,
I want to ask what's the performance of SMP on Linux compare to Win

My application is mostly Java native thread that will spawn around 3-400

And I think that most of the CPU time in single CPU is waste in context
switching.
Will SMP benefit in this case?
How much should I expect will increase when using SMP in Linux?? Is it
worth for SMP or should I setup two mahines for load balancing??
Thanks!!

Hi Steve,
I was wondering if you can boot from a floppy. If you can I would
try to get the new Lilo. I think it is version 21.5. It is available from
ftp://ftp.metalab.org . All you have to do is untar it, I believe, in the
/usr/src
directory and go in to the new directory it just created and do QuickInstall
It will compile and install it. It asks you questions along the way. I had to
add
lba32 to the lilo.conf file to accept my new 20 gb WD hard drive. I also
changed the delay factor from 5 to 50 to be able to have more time
to press the shift key on boot up to see the lilo menu. In my old computer
whos bios wouldn't accept a large hard drive I added a Promise DriveMAX
card that extends the bios to recognize up to 132 gb of hard drive.

Subject: Printer for Linux
Date: Mon, 04 Sep 2000 18:58:50 GMT
I would like to get myself a good printer for Linux, but I haven't ran
across any comparisons or the like as of yet. I am most
interested in excellent b&w output with good speed. Color is not a
must, but I wouldn't mind it. The biggest priority, though, is that the
Linux support is rock solid -- therefore I've been thinking about
getting a printer that has native PostScript.
I am willing to spend up to $500, but I am also very interested in
cheaper solutions that fit my needs. I have looked into some of
HP's printers and found that the DeskJet 1220C/PS would be
great, but it's a little too much and I don't need the large page
abilities it has.
Any suggestions? Any pages that compare printers for Linux?
Thanks,
Nick

Hello,
My question deals with compiling the kernel on RH 6.2. You have the
option to save configuration after doing make config or make xconfig
into a file. Where would the file corresponding to your installed
kernel (When you first install the system after selecting either custom
or KDE or GNOME workstation or server) be. In other words, after you do
the install, does the system keep the config file corresponding to your
kernel somewhere on the system so for later if you just want to modify
that as opposed to rebuilding the kernel from scratch and risk
destroying some features that you hav (Sound in my case)?

Hello,
When I installed my RH 6.2 system, I selected that eth0 be
configured at boot time via DHCP since I have a cable modem. Then when
I am done with using the internet, I simply turn off the connection with
pump -r, and re-establish it with pump -i eth0. All of a sudden (OR
I don't remember what I did), I can do pump -r and bring down the
connection, but I can't re-establish it anymore with pump -i eth0,
I actually have to re-boot to get the connection re-established, it's a
bit annoying simply because currently I don' t have a firewall and I
have to turn off my connection when I am away from my system, and turn
it back on when I come back.
Any help would greatly be appreciated.

I am running Redhat 6.2 kernel version 2.2.14-5.0smp and get this
message before the system locks up.
hda: lost interrupt
This ONLY happens in SMP, I have been using single processor kernel for
two days and have not had the problem. I first noticed the problem when
i tried to recompile the modules for smp kernel running the smp kernel
to test the speed. After the hard drive stoped thrashing that message
was displayed.
I amagine it has something to do the the interrupt mapping but I have no
experience with smp programming. It only does this in the smp kernel.
I read the IO-APIC document and it explanes how to exclude pci irq's
connected to the apic but I not sure this is the problem.
I have read a couple of the how-to' s and seached redhats sight but have
found nothing.
I have posted this message on news://comp.os.linux.development.system

SMP performacne with Linux and FreeBSD is bad! about 1.8 is the max that I
got and I wrote several parellel C programs to test it.
Windows NT gained better performance arround 1.9 to 1.95!
What you are saying is correct also for Windows infact every SMP based
system, the context switching often slows processes down.
SMP is a major bennifet when you have more threads or processes that have
alot of simulat itterations, like mathematical equations. Assoon as you
start to use IO wham bam gone
is the performance a lock is invoked cpu stops process is migrated to first
CPU to handle IO after that is done again a CPU lock is set so that both
processes are on the same instruction and then it starts to SMP again. IO
handeling is always single ended in Intel world. Unless you work with none
Intel stuff like Alpha's and Irix.
When you have the resources to use loadsharing with 2 systems and the
network latency is not a problem, in that case always choose for this.

order to get cdrecord to recognize it (for reference, see the "CD Writing
HOW-TO" at www.linuxdocs.org).

Nope, no disk in the drive, so I was not expecting a mount at boot-time.

The following modules are loaded manually in my /etc/rc.d/rc.local file:
ppa, parport, parport_pc. Typing 'lsmod' at the command-line confirms
that they are loaded. The scsi_core and sd_mod modules cannot be found
in /lib/modules/<kernel version #>/*/, so I am assuming they were compiled
into the kernel. I do not compile my own kernel. Rather, I apply whatever
kernel updates are posted at the Red Hat web site. Currently, Red Hat's
latest kernel update is version 2.2.16-3. In other words, how do I tell
if scsi_core and sd_mod were compiled into the kernel, other than the fact
that they are notto be found in /lib/modules/<kernel version #>/*/ ?
Here's another 'twister'. Whenever I try to mount the zip drive (i.e.
mount /mnt/cdrom), not only do I get the error messages already described,
but I am unable to eject the zip disk until I reload ppa (i.e. rmmod ppa;
insmod ppa). Don't know if this tells you anything.
Thx - Justo
