I choose the tyan mainboard with the via chipsset, super 7 , Amd chips
etc, for $99. It has the most PCI slots and 3 Dimm slots (the max).
The FIC-503+ is the other favorite, about $20 less. only 2 DImm slots
but 4 SImm slots less PCI slots. (3 i think) Has "non standard settings"
for overclocking... If you like to overclock this is the one.
BOth are very good and both work.
Clereon is also an option-- its really a tough call.
There are also some utlra cheap boards... one Via chipset (AMD) was only
$65 at http://tccomputers.com One socket370 (strip down Clereon
chipset) was only $50!!
I went with AMD beacause I think that in the future (2-3 years) the
vai/AMD boards will be more upgradable for cheap then the intel
boards.... i remember that last time intel took forever to sell the
P-200 for less than $200 while cyrix-p166+ were only $99 .... expect
the Slot one and socket 370 to be held hostage by intel when it comes to
replace the CPU..

IF you want to look at pentium class socket 7 boards (not super 7) then
http://tccomputers.com has a few of these 'obsolete boards' on sale.
you can get a board with a Pentium 133 for only $99

There is a PCI IDE driver which is sold mainly for mac users but I am told
is a generic PCI EIDE card with UDMA support.
Best to ask the company who makes and sells it.
They are at www.promax.com

Yes some AMD don't work at all with Radhat 4.2 5.1 5.2.
If you have the 'good' AMD chips it may work ;)
Don't use AMDK6 if you don't want to have problems. There is many.

Sorry - I just barly speak English. However, from the README file:
Quick install:
==============
Type 'configure' and 'make'.

1) run 'gusdevs' - this command creates devices for new driver
2) check /usr/local/etc/gus.conf configuration file
3) run 'insgus' - this command insert gus driver module to the kern...
Did you gusdevs? This creates the /dev files needed by the drivers including
(I think) the major device 14 - the sound card.

Subject: DHCP problem?
Date: 1 Mar 1999 01:49:40 GMT
I recently hooked up a computer to the resnet jack running linux. DHCP
assigned me the address 130.91.190.149 for my NIC. For some odd reason,
after the computer is off and disconnected from the jack, I'm able to
ping it and get a response at the IP. I get a MAC address of
08-00-2b-b7-ce-d0 from the IP, but when I connect my box to the jack
its MAC address isnt the one above. I also get this kernel error
in my logs.
Feb 28 20:13:04 wedge kernel: ARP: arp called for own IP address
I also can't seem to connect to my box thru telnet/www/ftp windows clients,
the connection just times out. But I am able to connect to it easily
thru another unix box like solaris or linux. I'm pretty sure the OS side
of things are fine. But is it possible that DHCP has assigned me an
already used IP address? Or something is misconfigured in the subnet?
Thanks!

Hi there. I just burned my first cd. I used mkisofs to make the disk image,
and that program gives all files root group and user ownership. That
shouldn't be a problem, but anyway, when I mount the cd and try to run a
program which has these permissions: '-r-xr-xr-x 1 root root', I still get
a Permission denied error. Does anyone know why this is the case? Thanks for
any info. BTW, this is how I mount it (from my fstab):

I have a Visioneer Paperport 3100 scanner which I want to make work under Linux.
This is the last component of my system that I need to be able to finally ditch
Windows.
I have been looking everywhere but have not been able to find drivers for the
scanner. In fact, strangely, I have not even seen it mentioned in the Linux

This printer is listed in the Printing HOWTO's compatibility listing
as working perfectly. The comments say:
The manual says it's a deskjet plus compatible, but selecting that
in ghostscript doesn't work use laserjet instead.

Wether or not you are running X should have no bearing on printing.
The DJ600C is fully supported by Ghostscript, and thus Linux. You
should use your distribution's printer configuration utility to setup
lpd to work with your printer. Consult your distribution's
documentation; the setup utilities vary from Linux to Linux.

Hmm. May the pink elephants help you...
Unless it pretends to be a "normal" scsi device like a disk or tape
streamer, you're going to have trouble. The most likely course of
action is to hack something together with the scsi-generic device.
There's a howto on doing that.
Do let me know how it goes; I maintain a printer compatibility listing
and would love to see this printer supported...

Your MIS guy could be half right.
I doubt it's got anything to do with the PII processor - I've got Linux
running on my PII at work without problems, every day.
However, you _may_ have an incompatibility with a BIOS setting being
overly aggressive, or a BIOS incompatibility somewhere along the line.
Without more info on your problem hardware, it's almost impossible to say
more.

I'm installing RedHat 5.1, using a Matrox Millenium II AGP Vid card. For
whatever reason Xconfigurator does not create a proper XF86Config file.
So I used xf86config. Created file, went through fine. Ran startx script.
Turns out Xwindows will only run in 320x480 or something weird like
that...it is kicking down to the default drivers and display modes. When I
use <ctrl><alt>+ to cycle through video modes, nothing happens, its like i
can only use this mode.
I've checked the file over and over, and both the Display, and Device
sections are configured properly...I think. I'm using a Sony Multiscan
200ES.
Can anyone help me who has gotten the Matrox card to work? I know it does.
Thanks in advance....
Jason.

Nevermind. It helps to change the symbolic link for

Tom,
I have read that they can be used. My PnP sound card has a Tertiary IDE
controller on it I intend to use some day.
Take a look at my web page on this very subject:
http://www.netspace.net.au/~bmiller/linux/ess1868.html#apendixd
This assumes that the IDE on the sound card will be PnP.
Hope this helps,
Brian.

Hi!
I have a surecom EP-320X-V fast ethernet card, and I can't get it
running in Linux 2.2.0+. With linux 2.0.36, I could use the driver
provided by the manufacturer, and it worked fine. But with 2.2.0 and on,
I couldn't use that driver anymore because of a new PCI interface in the
new kernel. (Not because I didn't recompile modules.)
I looked up the web for my card, and found out that a Tulip (DEC 21140)
will do for my card... So I got the source for the tulip and compiled
it. No problem here.
Problem is, I don't know how to start the module. When I do
insmod/modprobe, it says "init_module: Device or resource busy". I also
tried specifying the 2 options that are available: debug, options. Same
error message.
I'm wondering, has anyone got this card working in 2.2.0? If so, please
tell me how....
Thank you very much
