Cliff,
You need to turn off the plug and play in the bios, but also you need

I own a sb64, and it took me a while to realize that the wave table
software
for linux actually emulates an external midi device! what I do is when I
use
midi software, like playmidi I have to use the external midi command
switch
ex: playmidi -e canyon.mid
if everything is configured correctly that should do ya.

What type of vid card do you have? Many S3V based cards won't work unless you
choosed the W/O 600x800 resolution choice in the monitor setup.

Subject: modem problems
Date: 2 Mar 1999 06:34:56 GMT
I can't get my modem to work. I just purchased a US Robotics 56K external.
Using modemtool I set it up on cua1. Using minicom in an attempt to dial
out, the modem initializes (lights blink) but can't get it to dial out.
I've also worked though the PPP HOWTO.
I then tried it under Windows NT using the port com2 and can't dial out
either. I get blinking lights and an error message saying that there was a
possible hardware failure. The drivers are installed. I replaced the modem
and cable with new ones and still get the same problem so something else
is wrong. I went so far as to reinstall all of the networking software on
NT-still nothing
I'm at a loss on how to troubleshoot this one. What confuses me is that
the lights blink and nothing happens after that. The connection to the
phone line is good since a phone attached to the modem works
any ideas?

Go to an arts and craft shop where they sell supplies for making
small water fountains (the kind you can put in a large bowl with
pebbles and other stuff). Most of these are AC but I believe they can
be throttled manually to regulate their flow.
If $$ is no object, medical supply outfits might have "roller
pumps". These are pump drives that drive a roller over surgical tubing,
pinching it and forcing the fluid along as the rollers advance.
This would make a computer look pretty wierd, like it was hooked to a
kidney machine or something.

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
hello,
I need some help in getting Linux startet without booting Win*98 first:
So this the system:
ATI ALL IN WONDER PRO( 3d rage pro 2x) , 8MB sgram, AGP
Bios PN: 113-44610-102
UPgrade Module:__
ASUS P5A (with new bios patch 1005 for ati rage pro)
AMD K6 400 , 100 MHz bus
Siemens Scenic PM 170 (30-64kHz ; 50-120 Hz)
and this is the problem:
It seems that after booting the card doesn't get initialized. That
means only a very small (that small that you even can't set it right
using
the monitor keys) part of the screen is used and the refresh rate is
only
about 50Hz. The monitor works in the so called "user mode" which shows
that
it can't "communicate" with the ati AIW to get the appropriate
settings.
Starting a X-Server messes up my screen or leave it black (I tried
vga16, svga and the mach64 with different optins)
####The Clou:#### when booting WIN98 first and then Linux via loadlin
works without problems (mach64,800x600@100Hz, 24bpp). But I surely
don`t want to start windows before beeing able to use LINUX!
What exactly is the problem (card, monitor, motherboard?) ? And is
there any hope for me to get the ATI ALL IN WONDER initialized after
booting, or any other ideas what I can do (apart from buying a new
card)?
Thanks in advance

I'm trying to FTP files to my ISP's ftp server to load my webpage. I can
ftp fine in 95, and 98 no problem, with the same computer, same hardware.
Just that linux, for some reason will not upload. When I check the server,
only 1024 bytes are sent, and then it just gets stuck there. If I control
c, it tells me that it's waiting for the remote computer to hang up, but it
never does. Don't think that it's my hardware, but who knows. Maybe I need
a different string or something. I'm using a diamond SupraExpress upgraded
to V.90. Use the string AT&F2W2+MS=12,1.
Anyone know if I should be using a different string, or something? I tried
both Caldera 1.2 standard and 1.3 base, and they both do the samething. If
anyone has any idea on this, let me know.

I just got my own modem working so I'll take a stab here... most people
seem to suggest setting the PnP jumper on the modem to "off" and
manually configuring your IRQ and base address. My Diamond Supra 288i
doesn't seem to have _any_ jumpers on it and is PnP, so I went in via
Windows to get the port/IRQ information and then plugged that into
setserial. However, before that could work I had to run "pnpdump >
/etc/isapnp.conf" and then edit it to select the proper port/IRQ (I
guess port == base addr) for the modem.

Subject: 3Com Ethernet Adaper and Kernel 2.2.2
Date: 2 Mar 1999 13:20:04 GMT
Hi,
I have two webservers with the following configuration:
SuSE Linux Distribution 6.0, Kernel 2.2.2, 128 MB RAM, Adaptec 2940 UW
SCSI,
3Com 3c905B Cyclone Ethernet Adapter, Apache 1.3.4
The only difference between the two boxes is that one of them is a
Compaq Deskpro EN6350 while the other is a noname PC with an Asus P2xx
motherboard.
The Problem is: The Compaq box runs fast and stable while the other box
crashes unexpectedly after a while. There's no entry in the system log
whatsoever, it goes down without leaving any information on where the
error was. This is very bad as I just convinced my customers to use
Linux instead of NT and now I#m in trouble argueing for the Linux
solution.
My questions is: Can the combination of the SCSI adapter with the NIC be
the source of the problem? I read something on Donald Becker's page
about PCI Interrupt Sharing being a potential cause of problem with the
3Com NIC. However, on the Compaq box the SCSI adapter shares the
interrupt with the NIC and everything's runnig fine.
Did anybody experienced similar problems?
Any hints and pointer appreciated.
Regards
Stephan

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi there,
I have got a problem with Suse 6.0 running kernel 2.0.36. The kernel
crashes sometimes with the following error. There are only two things
which occur in all of these kernel panics. The first is a paging
request which fails, where the virtual adresses differ from case to
case.
The second one is the line (and this seems to be the problem:
"lumen kernel: current->tss.cr3 = 01144000, %cr3 = 01144000"
I have been searching the volumes for some file called tss.cr3. But I
did not find it. Could someone please help me what this might be ?
There is another strange behaviour: while the error happans all
messages from stderr (which IMHO should be sent to /var/log/messages
usually) are dumped out to the active console (e.g. "lp out of paper"
a.s.o)
This is taken from /var/log/warn

I am working with Redhat 5.2 distribution, using the 2.0.36 kernel. Great
stuff! but I'm running into a little problem trying to configure my ancient
Orchid SoundWave 32 sound board's general midi capabilities. During the boot, I
get a "Timeout during download" error (not the exact message, but close)
presumably as the boot process tries to download the genmid.ld file from the

and record .au files.
I think the problem is that I used menuconfig to configure my kernel, but did
not have the presense of mind to select the 'old script' method initially.
(Thereafter, menuconfig uses the "new" method). I was able to define all the
irq's , drq's and even the path to the genmid.ld file using menuconfig even
without the old script option, but I nonetheless suspect that this is the root
of my problem. The problem is that I don't know how to invoke this Old Script
option. I've read that in the Debian distribution you need to replace
drivers/sound/Config.in with Config.std. But in Redhat, I can't find a
Config.std :-(. Can anyone thell me how to invoke the Old Script option during
menuconfig?
Or if you know of another way to solve my real problem .... Getting the
genmid.ld to download to the SW32 properly... I'd greatly appreciate any help!

You need to initialise your PnP cards in Linux.
The simplest way is as follows:
execute: "pnpdump > isapnp.conf"
now print the file isapnp.conf
switch to windows and look at my computer for your pnp cards.
edit isapnp.conf with the found parameters.
instal the parameters with:
execute: "isapnp isapnp.conf"
That's all.
