If you look below, this Kernel WAS configured to work around the CMD640 bug.
The problem appears to be with whatever it is trying to access AFTER drive 1
(cmd). I have an old Pentium 100 with the same bug, but the install works
OK (different Kernel though). RedHat used a patched 2.0.35 kernel (or
pre-36) kernel for their installer (must be bleeding edge you know) and I
think it just came back and bit them in the arse. Anyway, I am willing to
bet it is a bug in the kernel code and not a hardware issue. Have your
tried installing either an old version of RedHat or another distribution
that will use more tested code (i.e. Slackware)?

I'm having problems setting up my GUS Extreme under RedHat 5.2. The pnpdump
tool doesn't recognize the card on it's sweep, and sndconfig reports device
busy or locked. Trying GUS/GUS Max doesn't work either, though selecting the
ESS 1688 Sound Driver does work, but doesn't give me any input. Playing
samples works. Does anybody have any tips for me?
Thanks,

I was recently shopping for a pair of fast ethernet cards for my apartment.
I ran accross netgear's 310tx card. Great card so far as long as your not
running redhat. The card came with a driver for SCO and Slackware. I'm new

PCI ne2000 and apparently that card doesn't support ne2000 standards. Any

Each also has Ethernet(1 has 10bt and 10b5; 2 & 3 have 10b2 and

The specific driver IS available! It just wasn't included yet in Redhat 5.1; you need

Date: Thu, 4 Mar 1999 10:20:07 +0100
I wanted to install Linux (great!) RH5.2 on my notebook (TFT,24MB,equivalent
Chinon 795,)...
The problem arises when I bought a new HD (Hitachi DK227A-41 4.1GB).
The system does not recognize it correctly, that is
the BIOS AutoID seems to work fine (finds out the right C/H/S parameters
7944/16/63)
but when I try to use fdisk to partition the disk I receive a lot of errors
from the disk
itself.
I boot Linus with the hda=7944,16,63 parameter, but few of errors came while
Linux is starting, errors like:
...
IRQ timeout: status 0x5a {drive ready seek complete data request index}
...
blah blah
ide0: reset
success
...
The disk i an ATA-3/ultra-DMA compatible, while the notebook interface is a
IDE one.
I'm afraid this is the problem, an hardware one. Sigh!
The disk is not recognized (of course) by Windows 95 neither NT on my
notebook, but works correctly on a desktop PC.
Any suggestion different from throw away the disk (or the notebook)?

Hi
Installing on onboard SCSI 875 controller is easy. Just select the NCRc8xx
driver during installation and do not forget to select the "Use Linear
Addressing " at the end of installation. Then follow the procedure given in
the following website to make your Smart 2 controller bootable.
http://www.insync.net/~frantzc/cpqarray.html
Configure your Controller to required Raid.

working, with many problems (bad burned images)
I have seen in the readme that the aha2940 adapter may cause this pbs so
i upgraded all my system:
I installed the RedHat 5.2, with kernel 2.2.2 , and xcdroast-0.96e
I can mount the cdrom ( device: /dev/sr0 )
I have an IDE cdrom installed, but it doesn't detect it, and I don't
know how to mount it (I don't care about it, bat may be it helps to know
it),
When I run xcdroast, it tells me:
Error: No /dev/sr-Devices found.
Please create first the devices. Run "./MAKEDEVICES.sh"
in the xcdroast-0.96e directory.
I made it, without problem, changes nothing
As written in the readme I did:
#cat /proc/devices
Character devices:

and i can see that the sg device is present
This is the same with the xcdroast-0.96d version.
I made this test:

Check your pppd config files; I think pppd is causing the problem. I'm
sorry I don't have pppd installed so I can't tell you exactly what the
setting is you should change. Do a 'man pppd' and look for options that

Hi,
I recently bought a notebook. It has a Toshiba XM-1802b CDROM drive,
IDE/ATAPI, which works like a charm. Except... it doesn't read the
avseq*.dat files on video CD's. I'm getting a whole bunch of hdc
device errors (Sense key=0x05 and that kind of stuff).
I checked some FAQs and stuff, and now I know that in order for the
drive to be able to read such a disk, it has to be CDROM/XA and/or
PhotoCD compatible. I checked the toshiba website, and indeed the
drive can do this kind of stuff. It is also Whitebook VideoCD
compatible. So why doesn't it do what it was told to do?
Anyone has a clue as to what may cause this, and more importantly,
how to fix it?

I have a Gigabyte motherboard w/ Award BIOS, Intel Triton PCI set.
When it boots, the BIOS sets all PCI slot IRQs to the same line.
It is the first one that's not assigned to legacy ISA.
The kernel does not seem to like it at all (understandably).
There's no way to tell the BIOS setup to map them to different lines
and as I've seen in the relevant kernel sources (ne2k-pci.c and
ncr53c7,8xx.c) the drivers accept whatever the BIOS set to the card.
I couldn't find a way to re-map the slot's IRQ.
What is the way out of this trap ?
Thanks in advance,

for a print job. All print jobs that will use the second tray will be run
through latex and dvips.
I have not found any hint how tray selection is done in Linux. Do I create
a second print queue? Are there printcap entries I have to setup? Are there
command line options for latex or dvips? Are there commands I embed in my
latex document?

It's better put an alias in /etc/conf.modules. It will load only when you need,
not by default when booting. Maybe you need print something !!!

I have the same card, except my chip was listed as "Mach 64 GI Rage
Pro" (RH 5.2) and I have a PB monitor, which the idiots at Packard
Bell have no info about. So, I just kept rerunning xconfigurator and
changing settings (lower end first) until I got the right combo. My
snag was on the clockchip setting, (OK "Clockchip configuration") but
I got past it. Now I am working on my modem. Check which xserver you
are using. If you type "startx" and the screen is blank hit
ctrl+alt+backspace immediately to avoid posssible monitor damage. The
info that runs before the problem might provide a clue.

Has anyone configured an Epson Stylus Color 600C for Linux. I'm using
Slackware 3.5 (Linux kernel 2.0.34).
Thanks.
