Subject: TV tunner card for Linux --have specific requirements
Date: Tue, 12 Sep 2000 05:31:25 GMT
Hi,
I need a TV tuner card that is currently or going to be supported by
Linux. The card can be integrated into a graphics card or separate. I need
it to be able to change channels in the hundreds. The card needs to have an
A/V jack on it to output what the computer has tuned to a TV, like using the
card as a tuner and output the video signal to a TV or VCR. If Linux does
not support this feature yet, but windows does, I need a digital VCR option
on the card to record programs on TV. I am going to hook this setup to an
amp for sound so I will use a sound card to export the audio. I DO NOT WANT
the card to output the OS desktop, I want just video signal that is coming
in from the cable company! I do not want to see the OS desktop with a
window showing the program on that TV channel. I want just what would be in
the vid window to appear on the TV with the same quality you would get as if
you plugged the cable directly into the TV. The computer will be in charge
of recording shows, changing channels and taking pics from the TV shows but
the TV will be displaying the show.
So again the TV tuner needs to have the ability to output the video signal
it is getting to an A/V cable for a VCR or TV as well as (need not be
simultaneously) show a TV window for viewing on the computer monitor. The
more A/V outputs it has the better but I at the very least need a port for
video.
If no such card exist could you offer recommendations. Need to record TV
programs on the computer to watch them later and grab video off shows but I
want to see it on my 27"+ TV not my 17" computer monitor. I want to key the
channel on the Linux station turn around and watch the show on the TV.
Please email recommendations as I check it more often then the newsgroup.
Thanks for your help, Joshua

Subject: Compiling alsaplayer with esound output?
Date: Tue, 12 Sep 2000 00:59:40 -0400
Not sure this is the best newsgroup, but anyway..
I can not for the life of me get alsaplayer to compile with esound
support, I've compiled esound 0.2.18 from source, installed the src rpm,
already had the binary rpm installed, not sure what else to try!
Any suggestions? Basically, I'd like adjustable output volume (so I can
keep my speaker volume up fairly high and adjust the volume in xmms in
software, without my other sounds (currently using esdplay) being at
full volume). Pretty much any other sound player which has adjustable
volume which sounds fine in esound is good.
Are there any other esound alternatives? esound doesn't seem to get
updated very often, perhaps there's a fresher alternative.

According to the HOWTO, you should enter:
linux ide=0xeff1,0xefe7
at the lilo prompt, so you should enter the same paramaters after text when
booting with the install CD
text ide=0xeff1,0xefe7
I'm not clear about how to boot with other methods, but the paramaters
should be the same.

I did run lilo after making the changes and then restarted the PC. No
change. I tried the append line in the image section as well as the main
section (where the vga= is).
Below is my lilo.conf file:

There has been a thread about this problem a week or so
ago. Apparently, the problem can be solved by recompiling
the kernel with the option _not_ to disable the processors
serial number. At least, that was the solution in the
previous thread IIRC.

Thanks for your response, but this does not solve my problem. I need it
exactly the other way. Let me explain my problem :
I have a serial device with only a serial interface attached to it (a blood
pressure machine). I have to place this equipment in a room far from our
server, where we have network. So, I want to prevent buying another pc,
attaching it to the network, and attaching the bp-machine to this pc. I
wondered if there existed such a small adaptor that acts like a print server
(you know, that wonderfull small box that acts like lpd).
It would be great if I could connect to some network-adres which would provide
me with the serial signals from the serial interface without buying another pc
and without writing this piece of software myself. So, what I need is a black
box with one serial connector, one network-connector, and if I connect to
<some-IP>:<some-port>, I can send and receive signals to/from the serial
device.
Hope made myself clear enough :-)

If you use a Linux bootdisk your controller does not need to
know squat about what a CD is! My 486 does not even know what a CD is
(I ran an IDE one here for testing) you just don't tell the Cmos that
you have one (doh!). Jumper it as slave. set your HD to master. Then
you use the Msdos or another linux/unix system to make a copy of the
boot disk you need. On slackware you want for now bare.i and the
install disk color.gz
WARNING! on my NCR 3230 system with my 24X IDE cdrom I get a
controller error that only affects autoboot (turnkey) just bash ENTER
at the error and the system fires up fine! I have not found the cause
for this bug but it does NOT stop a normal Slackware 3.9 (thats the
last of the good libc5 distros with the Linux 2.0.37 kernal)
installation.
I have used this IDE cd on both my All Scsi file servin 486
and my client machine (also a 486) No problems on either system other
than that boot bug I mentioned above.

So far NO Good! Linux is not seeing your Scsi host adaptor!
Check your DMA, IRQ and I/O addressing of your card. You may need to
change them to the factory defaults. I have not used such a card as I
use a Vesa Localbus AVA-2825VL. Check the Scsi-HOWTO to find out how
to manually enter your Host Adaptor info into the Lilo command line.
Unless your host adaptor gets set right. Forget the tape! Once
your adaptor gets noticed. the tape devices you will use are very
generic /dev/st0 and /dev/nst0.

IIRC the same effect can be achieved through a bootprompt
parameter, can't remember details though.
Btw. SuSE 7 works fine on my KT7, no trouble whatsoever.

I can recommend IBM, I've got two different drives (DDRS and DNES)
of ~9GB, 7200rpm, that work fine, fast, quite silent. The DNES is
quite new, the DDRS has been in use for a couple of years. These
were easy to find in stock, too.
Btw. I also use a 2940UW, both drives are U2W.
You *can* use narrow SCSI with the 2940UW too (internal port) as
long as you don't try to use the external port at the same time
(use any two ports of the three, but not all three).

Most (all?) external modems should be just fine. You'll need serial and ppp
support in the kernel.

Subject: SB 16 ISA PnP: Alsa ok, Kernel not???
Date: Tue, 12 Sep 2000 11:20:16 +0200
Hi,
I've a strange problem with a Sounblaster 16 ISA PnP on SuSE 6.4.
The card is detected by alsaconf, and everything works fine with
the alsa drivers. But the kernel drivers (sb.o) refuses to detect
the card (unfortunately, I need the kernel drivers for Quake I).
In /proc/isapnp there are the following information:
Card 1 'CTL00f0:Creative ViBRA16X PnP' PnP version 1.0 Product version 1.=
0
Logical device 0 'CTL0043:Audio'
Device is not active
Active port 0x220,0x330,0x388
Active IRQ 5 [0x2]
Active DMA 1,3
Resources 0
Priority preferred
Port 0x220-0x220, align 0x0, size 0x10, 16-bit address decoding
Port 0x330-0x330, align 0x0, size 0x2, 16-bit address decoding
Port 0x388-0x3f8, align 0x0, size 0x4, 16-bit address decoding
IRQ 5 High-Edge
DMA 1 8-bit byte-count compatible
DMA 3 8-bit byte-count compatible
Alternate resources 0:1
...
etc.
Ok, so I tried the following lines on the modules.conf file:
alias char-major-14 sb
post-install sb /sbin/modprobe "-k" "adlib_card"
options sb io=3D0x220 irq=3D5 dma=3D1 dma16=3D3 mpu_io=3D0x330
options adlib_card io=3D0x388
After doing a depmod, I tried "modprobe sb" (after unloading
the alsa driver of course), but got the following:
/lib/modules/2.2.16/misc/sb.o: init_module: Device or resource busy
/lib/modules/2.2.16/misc/sb.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.2.16/misc/sb.o faile=
d
/lib/modules/2.2.16/misc/sb.o: insmod sb failed
The same when I try to specify irq etc. directly as parameter to modprobe=
=2E
With "fuser" I've checked that no one is using the sound devices...
When alsa is loaded, it shows the following information in /proc/asound:
=
Sound Driver:3.8.1a-980706 (ALSA v0.5.5 emulation code)
Kernel: Linux linux 2.2.14 #1 Sat Mar 25 00:45:35 GMT 2000 i686

Synth devices: NOT ENABLED IN CONFIG
Midi devices:
0: MPU-401 (UART)
Timers:
7: system timer
Mixers:

That all looks very fine to me, but why is the kernel driver
refusing to detect the card???
Has anyone an idea? I would really appreciate any help!!!

That would be a correct assumption. Internal modems are often winmodems,
and use the CPU more than an external modem. This is also why internal
modems are cheaper than the external ones, as less hardware is required.
For Linux, any external modem that uses the serial port should be able to
work properly. Don't worry if the packaging says windows required for such
a modem, as this often applies to the bundled software, not the modem
itself. Go for one of the common brands of external modems, such as
USRobotics.

Subject: Crash when leaving X on compaq EP
Date: Tue, 12 Sep 2000 11:45:59 +0200
Hi all!
I have a compaq EP with 440bx set and P3/450, nothing special. I
installed mandrake 7.2 on it without any trouble, only when I start X
(xinit is enough) and the try to get out of it again (ALT-F1 is enough)
the system hangs, my monitor goed to standbye, nothing works anymore and
all I can do is pull the plug. I've tried putting the VGA (diamond s540
with savage4, AGP) on another interrupt, installed the latest bios
update but nothing changed.
Before, I used an abit BEG with the same VGA and mandrake version
without any trouble.
It looks to me like some hardware conflict but I can't find it
anyone got a clue?
CHeers,
Sander

My problem is that the modem disconnect during negotiations.
Does anyone have a solution for that problem, or do I have to buy
another modem?
Thanks!
