Yes, I have one. It uses the tulip chipset.

1. You need " .xinitrc " in your home directory and it needs the
following line in it " exec gnome-session"
without the inverted comma's of course. Comment out any other window
managers .
2. make sure you have /usr/bin/ in your path.
I installed Gnome yesterday and had no problems.
Good luck.

Date: Sun, 07 Mar 1999 06:40:12 GMT
Hi, all.
I just treated myself with an Artec internal CD-RW, and connected it on the
second IDE channel as a slave drive. Windoz98 does recognize both the first
and second CD-Rom drives, while I haven't been able to figure out how to make
linux do that. Here's a copy of dmesg output.
hda: Maxtor 90845D4, 8063MB w/512kB Cache, CHS=1024/255/63
hdb: IOMEGA ZIP 100 ATAPI, ATAPI FLOPPY drive
hdc: NEC CD-ROM DRIVE:28D, ATAPI CDROM drive
hdd: no response (statues = 0xd0) <-- this should be the second slave, right?
ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7, 0x3f6 on irq 14
ide1 at 0x170-0x177, 0x376 on irq 15
Floppy drive(s): fd0 is 1.44M
The second CD-Rom drive won't even open the tray under linux.
Where should I start? I did check CD-ROM howto and stuff, but seems like it
doesn't really mention about it...
Any help would be really appreciated.
Cheers,
Dae

obtain the compatible X server from the latest XFree86 version w/c (I think)
is XF86_3DLabs or download xglint.rpm from the SuSE linux site.
(see http://www.suse.de/XSuSE/XSuSE_E.html )
I also have a Fire GL 1000 Pro and had great results after installing
xglint.rpm and configuring X through xf86config.
good luck.

I have used the AMD K-6 350 mhz for this last year and have had no problems
with it. It is on a FIC 503+ board.
I have several friends who are running a Celeron 300a overclocked to 450,

Job ads, off-topic in comp.unix.admin, are a sign of an employer that is
either technically clueless or abusive and irresponsible, or both. In
any case, a company you do not want to work for! There are hundreds of
*.jobs.* newsgroups where they belong.
In addition, posting of html in newsgroups is also technically clueless;
many people use readers that don't understand html.

Keep in mind that space on an ext2 file system is divided up into block
groups of 8 MB each (8192 blocks per group). A 6 GB partition would
have on the order of 1200 block groups. Even 60 MB of total free space
works out to an average of around 50 KB per block group, which means
that large files are likely to have their blocks scattered around the
disk.
Now I've got no experience whatsoever with 6 GB file systems, but I'd be
reluctant to go much below 5% reserved space (about 400 KB per block
group) without knowing more about the way that file system was likely to
be used. (I keep trying to find examples to illustrate the point, but I
have second thoughts about every one I come up with, so I'm just going
to leave it at that.)

Hi everybody,
I recently purchased a generic 2 port 16c650 serial card, and was wondering
if anyone had any experiance in setting them up? The cards capable of
460800bps but I only need 230400bps as thats the fastest my modem will do.
setserial detects it as a 16450 (and thus doesn't use the fifo on the card)
, so I did setserial /dev/cua0 uart 16650 baud_base 230400 (is the 16c650
a 16650 or a 16650V2 uart? ), and the modem doesn't work.
Are there any special parameters or drivers that I need?
Thanks for your help

I do not know any new Hardware, and I am eager to learn new things.

Which version of "setserial" do you use?
My version doe not know the 16750-chip
How does "setserial" change the external crystal?
Who is the maker of the chip, where do I get a data-sheet?

I'm relatively new to linux but the following is what I found to the

A) Redhat 5.2 (2.0-36.07 i think) the driver provided at the netgear
site
appears to work okay as a module but strange crashes occur when i
transfer large directories and such over samba..
B) All attemps at compiling the new kernel (2.2.2) with the driver seem
to work unforntunately.. DHCP fails when it attempted to negotitate an
ip address although the kernel definetly found the card on startup..
(drivers from netgear and the latest version from the site of the person
that makes the driver.) (I have the same card at home running on a
machine and the 2.2.2 kernel default tulip driver works fine.. of course
i'm not using dhcp there..)
c) I think i currently have the newest driver from the site of the
person who made the driver in the first place (check the .c file?)
running as a module in
the standard redhat 5.2 2.0.36 kernel now.. It appears to be stable..

After installing RedHat on one of my servers I would like to install it on
my main machine. The server was easy (it was IDE), but my main machine is
running SCSI with an Adaptec 7895 dual-channel device (on the motherboard)
with a Seagate Cheetah 9.1GB drive. Is this compatible?
RedHat's site does not specifically list it as a supported device. I have
also searched Dejanews and it appears that some people are using Linux with
the 7895, but no details were given. I would just try installing it, but
NT4 itself doesn't support it OOTB (neither does the latest beta of NT 5).
Anyone using this chip under RH 5.2? If so, is supported OOTB?

I just bought a Digital Research 40x IDE ATAPI CDrom.
For the last day it has functioned normally.

messages: (hdd is my cdrom device)
Mar 7 03:41:31 far1197 kernel: hdd: packet command error: status=0x51 {

Then this from xmcd (my cd player software) everytime I hit the xmcd
eject button.
CD audio: ioctl error on /dev/cdrom: cmd=CDROMEJECT errno=16
The CDrom eject does nothing. I can play songs from the cd in the cdrom
fine even now, just no ejecting, through software or the button on the
cdrom itself. This is very frustrating bedcause I had a similar problem
with my previous cdrom, but I figured it was dying since it was an old
2x.
Please advise of the probable cause of this. I am wondering if I should
take the cdrom back or if it is something else that should be fixed,
especially because the last cdrom had similar problems.
My system is Redhat 5.2 with linux 2.2.2

Hi all,
I've got the following problem:
I've got a Tornado Webjet 128, thats an external ISDN TA, it works fine
for dial out. BUT I wan't to create a dail-up server with this modem.
The problem is, I've got 4 phone-numbers, e.g. (1,2,3,4)
under linux I use mgetty to take up the phone. The modem is programmed
at number 4, but when someone calls in on number 3 (private phone) it
also answers. So I wonder is is possible to let the modem react on only
one number ? and how could that be done.
BTW the modem says its from allied data techologies, but I could't find
a website from them. I suppose I just need the complete AT-command set
for this modem.
Please reply via email, I can't read this group to often....

I dont have the details next to me, but in the latest Mac World magazine there
is a whole article on Linux for the Mac [PowerPC]. And the biggest suppries I
found was that Apple was openly working on a 'Mac OS X' which runs the linux

I've been attempting to configure my 3com 3c509b network card for about
three weeks now with no success. I have literally tried everything and
the damn thing still won't work. For starters, I'm running red hat 5.2 on
a gateway p5 (pentium 133). I've read every single HOWTO on ethernet,
networking, ipx, etc, have read a bunch of posts on several different
newsgroups and while I've come close to figuring out what's wrong, I've
always found my way back to the drawing board. At the moment, my problem
is that dhcpcd is not returning an ip address for my card to use...( i.e
the ip address remains at 0.0.0.0 ). However, I think there is another
issue involved (in other words, I don't think that dhcpcd is the part
that's screwed up). And just for anyone's information the ip forwarding
protocol is not enabled (and I'm not sure how to enable it either). I'm
running off a LAN on campus, using an RJ-45 cable (plugged into a wall
adapter - no 10-baseT hub). Oh, and I've disabled PnP. [FYI - The card
works fine with Windows 95].
I've provided some useful information from several files below. Please
send me any suggestions. I'm practically at my wit's end. If you need to
see some other information, let me know and I will provide it. Thanks in

Does this MPEG decoder cause problems with the ATI All in Wonder Card
configuration to set up Xwindows?
It is the only thing that I can think of why my monitor goes black
after typing startx
(see ATI All IN WONDER thread....)
HELP!!
Kevin.
