The example I gave involves heavy (indeed, primary) use of off the
shelf commercial software.

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I used to have a notebook and really loved to use the suspend/resume
functionality, thus turning off fans and harddisks and the display without
having to reboot when I wanted to continue my work.
I have an ASUS P2B mainboard (atx) that has some power control, for example
when I shutdown under Windows (yuck) it does a poweroff. There also is a
suspend mode, but it does not seem to affect the power fan.
Running Linux 2.2.2, the poweroff does not happen (yes I configured apm to do
it) and also apm -s does suspend only for a few seconds then comes back up
again. What could be the reason?
The only unusual hardware in the SCSI system (p2b-s, onboard scsi, no use of ide) is
the teles 16.3 isa card.
I heard of other people that run the p2b from ASUS and can do a poweroff.
What could be my problem?
Any hint appreciated.

That's a good hint, man pages are a precious source of information.
I have a 6 GB partition, 5% makes more than 300 MB as reserved space, 1%
is more then 60 MB. What size would you recommend, is 10 MB enough?
To all others: I appreciate any other numbers. Please give me an
explanation for your proposed reserved space. TIA.

The reserved space is only for the super user, not normal users. And:
even for the super user, will it be used in normal operations (e.g.
"gzip foo")? I thought, that it comes in use while repairing file
systems (e.g. replacing un-readable blocks with good ones). I'm eager to
hear other opinions, better facts.

ok. i stand corrected. i will accept your points.
however, if you really need to have 7 GB of memory, it would make
sense to get a machine that can handle it. i do not think 32 bit
intel would be a good choice. if nothing else, the kernel would have
to keep track of oversize pointers in order to manage the memory. it
would a lot of trouble to do right and i don't think it can be done
right with the i386 arch.

I've run Linux for quite sometimes (since 0.99pre actually) and I just
got myself an iMac running MacOS 8.5.1. I've never got so many crashes
on Linux compared to MacOS and Lose95/98. May be as suggested by others,
get Mac and run LinuxPPC on it but on the very first place, why do you
buy a Mac when you can get equivalent PC based Linux system for less.

I just installed Mandrake 5.2 on my 486. (Also has DOS/Win95)
The SB16 sound card appears to work fine.
I have an ATI 3D xpression with TVOUT.
Video card appears happy and working fine.
The monitor is a Philips Magnavox CM2099 14 inch "Enhanced VGA"
monitor with Energy Star. It is capable of 640x480 thru 1024x768 SVGA.
Linux 5,2 install would not allow us to select the two Philips options
in the setup, and won't allow us to manually customize it.
KDE X-win is running in 640x480 with a virtual 800x600. Its managable
for the time being, but I want real full screen 800x600.
Anyone having any suggestions PLEASE let me know. Thanks.
PS:Love that KDE X-win interface!

What kind of card doesn't matter so much as what chipset it has.
According to the above information, yours has a Permedia2 Chipset. Go
download the newest version of XFree86(3.3.3.1-1, i believe). The
Permedia2 chipset is supported under the XF86_3DLabs server. I had a
card with the same chipset recently, and it worked great... wasn't AGP,
but that shouldn't matter (i think).
