but why can't you run staroffice, or corel WP suite, or applixware, and

It's compatible with office?

I am using RED HAT. I made a directory in my /home directory HP722c and
I was able to untar the file. I did a make 720 and placed the pbm2ppa
file in /usr/bin and pbm.conf.720 into /etc and add the lines from
README.REDHAT into printerdb file like the README and INSTALL files
said. I'm stuck now. I still can't get the printer to print. Can you
help??

My mistake: I meant main NT architect. As I remember he also brought a
lot of people from Prism/Mica project at DEC in 1988.

I have a Sound Blaster AWE64 (value), and am trying to set it up under
SUSE 5.3...
I have read the Sound-HowTo, but that wasn't much help.
Any explanations I have seen for the SB64 setup in the past have not been
that clear. In addition, they have been for older versions or different
distributions.

I guess what I'm looking for is either some clear instructions on how to
set this up or a referance to a site that has such instructions.

It would be greatly appreciated if anyone could help me out... =)

I have Red Hat 5.1 with a year old IOMega Jaz Jet SCSI card and an Intel
Etherexpress pro 100+ card.

Both cards hook IRQ 10, and both are detected at boot. No errors are
reported at boot.

But, the ethernet card doesn't work unless I remove the Advansys based
SCSI card. Is there any way to change the SCSI card IRQ? Or Intel IRQ?

They work under Windows ok.

Again, not necessarily true. If you have a lot of jobs that need to run,
each CPU gives you additional throughput. It's the age old question of
do you buy lots of slower processors or fewer faster processor ?. I think
the answer lies somewhere inbetween, depending on your application.

No, of course not, but you can equal or surpass the *throughput* for less money
with Dual PII Intel boxes in many cases.

If you have a lot of integer work, Intel is surely the way to go. They
are great for work with lattice Monte Carlo simulations.

Again, not necessarily true. For an FP bound code, a machine built to "maximize
performance" is usually going to be a waste of money since most of the extra
dollars are going to improve the I/O situation.

Dell has Dual 450 MhZ PII systems well configured for $3800. In my
book, that counts as cheap.

Huh ? I know how to program, but there's no way in hell I'm going to
come anywhere close to writing libraries that are better than, say, Compaq's.
And how much is the time worth that I waste writing a library instead of
doing science ? That's a big reason why we run DU and NT on Alphas instead
of Linux. Why pay a premium for a faster CPU and then cripple (to the
tune of 20-30%) with g77 ? In that case, you're really better off with
an Intel box.

Throughput has always been an irrelevant measure of system performance
to end users. All anyone cares about the the turnaround on thier major
code. Increased throughput is only of interest to the extent that it may
be correlated to turnaround. Unless you can multiprocess your main
code, multiple units does not enhance the most important measure of
performance.

Our Amptron MB is gathering dust -- we replaced it because
it was just too flaky. Same CPU, peripherals, memory,
different MB are rock-solid.

I am having the same problem. I have run sndconfig and hear the test
sound just fine. As a matter of fact, the sound actually works for the
first few minutes after rebooting the machine despite the reported
interrupt test failure on IRQ 5 from dmesg | more. I tried isapnp
tools, but after running pnpdump > /etc/isapnp.conf, the card does not
show up in the file. Sndconfig does not recognize the card as a pnp
either, so I have to set up the parameters manually. No big deal, irq=5
io=0x220, etc, etc.

Then, the sample sound plays, I have sound for about 60 seconds playing
XGALAGA, and then it dies. I have checked all the relevant
documentation and still can't turn up an answer. Any help would be
greatly appreciated.

My situation is that I have just brought an old 386 that I can't change
the bios settings due to numerous reasons. I want to add a bigger hard
driver to it, however I can't tell bios that I have installed a new
harddrive. I used another machine to install Lunix and lilo on the hard
drive, however this does not work when putting it back into the 386.
I can't boot from a floppy because it only has 5.25 and wont fit
the boot image on a disk. Without any setup software for the bios am I
doomed?

I found an old NIC in a machine and I'm trying to make it work under Linux.
I can't find what model it is. The chipset reads

sm909f
9519 ed

It has no FCC registration info, but the NIC ADDRESS is 004005 1B1FD0

I looked the ADDRESS range up in the web and it belongs to

00-40-05 (hex) ANI COMMUNICATIONS INC.
004005 (base 16) ANI COMMUNICATIONS INC.

                                 IRVINE CA 92714

BUT THIS CORP. DOES'NT SEEM TO EXIST!! I've looked it up in the WWW, DejaNews
and in several engines..

Please help!! The card had a "Runs with Netware" stamp..if that helps..

Thanks in advance

yup, FAT32. Since I have RH 5.0, maybe 5.2 has the support I need, and
if so, how do i go about upgrading my Kernel? Were you speaking of linux

Yes. Apsfilter 5 includes support for uniprint drivers. There is a
fellow working on a uniprint parameter file for the 740; his initial
version which mostly works was posted to Usenet a few days ago. Find
it in Dejanews.

I'm not sure how you add new upp drivers to apsfilter; worst case you
can just modify the apsfilter script to include the new one, or you
could select the 640 and replace instances of 640 with 740 in the
resulting configuration.

> Also, is anyone going to write USB drivers?

Yes, someone is working on that. I have no idea where it stands.
