Hi all,
I can't get CD audio through my speakers and my Sound Blaster PCI 64.
* Works under Win98.
* Can play samples under Linux with /dev/audio
* When I play CD it seems to read fine, and I can hear using the headphones
on the drive.
* Kernel 2.2.2 with about all the sound stuff compiled as modules.
* RH 5.2
* Tried playing with the mixer settings. No effect.
* cat /dev/sndstat give "Operation no supported" or something like that.
* I read every HOWTO I could find, and scan Dejanews to death for info.
This is really driving me nuts.
TIA,
Simon Edwards

Sounds like you have a resource conflict, and your board is old enough to have
onboard jumpers that you will need to use to disable the onboard port. (or DIP
swithches?)
Remove the modem, and when you boot up, pause the system at the BIOS banner
screen, and read what serial ports are detected at boot. if you see 2 different
ones, then you will have to find that pesky jumper or header that needs a jumper
to disable, that is if the board manufacturer decided to let you disable it.
even a 14.4K modem is new enough to almost certainly have a 16550A UART, so I
think that you are seeing the on-board port.

Hello All,
I have been trying to setup up Linux to recognize my modem, and to
configure a PPP connection to my ISP. I have read most of the man
pages, and the HOWTOs. Not much info on setting this up. I tried using
linuxconf, but I don't seem to get anywhere. When I say connect, its
just quiet. Shouldn't I hear dial tone, dialing, handshaking... I
don't think that Linux is recognizing my modem. Any advice about what
tools and utilities I should use to get this thing rolling would be
great.
Thanks,

actually, it doesnt matter that much anymore..
I am currently running a dual p2-233.
One of the cpu's is a true p2-233, the other is an
underclocked p2-266. It works, no modifications.
I have run linux smp in the past on this machine, no
problems, and am currently using it as an NT station.

You know that it went the other way around?
They first made the Pentium II and then fearing the concurrence
of AMD they stripped it of the 2nd level cache and gave it
away almost as a present. After that they put back a FASTER
ON DIE although smaller cache, but still pretend that the Celeron
perform worst then PII( and this is not the case!).
BTW I don't see how would be different to test a CPU alone
or together with another one.
It is only marketing!
Another good example of this strategy is the XEON
Do you really think that the 1MB cached one is worth 2000$?
How much do you think they spend on the 400MHz memory? 1500$?
You will not convince me they are doing a fair marketing.

Daniele

Subject: Sony Internal Sound Card Problem
Date: Thu, 11 Mar 1999 12:36:15 -0600
I can't seem to configure the built-in sound card for a Sony (name
brand) computer. I'm using Redhat 5.2, and the sndconfig fails to
identify the sound card. I have manually tried sound blaster compatible,
opl3-sa (1 and 2/3x), adlib, and others.
I looked in the bios and it is a opl3-sa with the following settings:
SB 220h
WSS 530h
MPU 300h
FM Synth 388h
WSS IRQ 11
SB/MPU IRQ 5
WSS DMA 0
SB DMA 1
Based on that I manually added a few lines to the conf.modules for the
opl3-sa, but that didn't work either. I've also recompiled the kernel
(twice, once to stick internal kernel support for it and other to redo
it as a module), and tried everything in the HOWTOs for both modules and
sound.
I've also experienced a unique problem after I add a driver (other than
adlib). When I try to test the card, it says "/dev/audio busy" in an
error box. I also can't remove the soundcore module because rmmod
returns that it's busy. (Although I can remove all the other soundlow,
soundhigh, etc.)
Installation of the soundblaster compatible support impossible. Since
soundcore is busy just after installation, the sb.o never installs.
Anyone know how to configure this screwy system?
(Other system stats available - just email me for what else you need.)

Date: Sat, 6 Mar 1999 12:50:49 -0600
Eric's trick will probably work for what you want to do but remember that if
you have a SuperDisk in the drive at the time their is a good chance that it
might be formatted down to 1.44MB which could damage the disk.
Another thing about booting is that on my system even after I boot up if I
am using the boot/root install disks my boot disk will load (assuming the
BIOS can access it, if you are using a LS120 controller card you may have to
set it up first, possibly in dos if it has a special setup program) it asks
for the root disk but never detects the disk change and I think it tries to
still probe /dev/fd0. I event tried passing root=/dev/hdd but it didn't
work as it wouldn't go for the disk needing to be changed. When I installed
my system I just used a bootable SlackWare 3.5 cd-rom. I made the boot/root
install floppies in ms-dos using rawrite and didn't have a problem with
them. It might be to your advantage to make the boot disk by hand also.
When formatting the floppy do it like a hard drive (except you don't need to
make paritions).

Does your BIOS support that size of a drive? I've seen some that looked
like they did support a large drive but it only worked half-way so after I
finally installed some BIOS override software on the drive it worked fine.
You might try some of that software and also see what kernal version you are
using. Maxtor has a good program but depending on how you boot into linux
(if you use multiple OS) you will need something that boots the way you
want. I think the Maxtor program will let Lilo load in right after it but
I'm not sure. You can get it at their web site: http://www.maxtor.com

Hi...
I have a 3COM 905B (10/100 Etherlink XL) and I can't get it to work under
10mb/s DHCP with the vortex driver. It runs under 100mb/s DHCP, which
just blows my mind, but not with 10mb/s... I read somewhere that the
driver or the card had a problem requesting DHCP at 10mb/s, anyone know of
a workaround or solution? Should I stick with this card that works fine
under windows or should I swap with my friend for his Intel 10/100?
Also, my stupid InJet "v.90" PCI modem (with the cirrus logic x2/v.90
chipset) doesn't work under Linux either. Not that I'm surprised, but does
any have any workarounds??? It's really a POS modem and I should get a
different one, but I'm a wishful thinker and I'd like to save my $20
investment ;)
So, basically connectivity in general just hates me under Linux =) I'm not
going to let that get me down, though! hehehe... anyways, any help is much
appreciated.
