I am having trouble getting and Digital PC 5000-266 PII system to use
the build in DEC Chip 21143 ethernet controller. The onboard controller
works fine, when I am in my BORG BODY SUIT (ie Windows NT4.0 SP4) But I
am trying real hard to remove my BORG eye piece, Arm extender and body
suit ;) .
Anyhow enough of the sillyness. The red hat 5.2 CDrom install never
detected this controller, I have re-build a(several) kernals (modular
and monolitic) with the newest tulip.c (24-feb-'99). This kernal find
the controller but end's up with a warning about the transcever being
not found. When I tried a modular kernal I never saw the eth0: device
get reported in the message log. I use the xconfig tool changed the 'Y'
to a 'M' (PCI ether section was still 'Y') make boot; make clean; make
dep; make modules; make modules_install. cpoy the kernel, and
/sbin/lilo. Rebooted.

I'm having the same problem! Except my modem occasionally kicks in out of
the blue and dials as if to mock me. I have tried every method of opening
the ppp connection, and nothing will activate the modem, but I can easily
dial out through the modem in minicom HELP???

I am running RED HAT 5.2 and I have a HP722C printer. I installed the
pbm2ppa file onto my system. I am able to print postscript files using
lpr.
Example: "lpr testpage.ps" or from the printool of RED HAT in X windows.
I also want to be able to print other files like: ascii, .txt, .bmp,
.jpg, etc...
I am using the RED HAT filter in the printcap file.
/etc/printcap reads:
lp:\
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp:\
:mx#0:\
:sh:\
:lp=/dev/lp1:\
:if=/var/spool/lpd/lp/filter:
I thought that the RED HAT filter was a magic filter allowing for
printing multiple file types. I've tried "lpr testpage.txt" or "lpr
testpage.ascii", but I don't get any results.
Can you please help me.
Thanks in advance.

Linux supports FAT32 just fine, which is pretty funny considering
Microsoft's own WinNT does _not_. Sheesh.

If you are trying to boot from the drive you will have to tell the bios to
boot from SCSI otherwise things get all kinds of funky. If you have
already done that you may have to wait for someone else to reply.

If it helps any, my ViperV550 works fine with linux - in fact it's
supported.
You need the newest version of XFree86 and the svga server.
My only question... will I be able to play quake3 on my TNT under linux?

I am a confirmed Slackware user. I've tried RedHat several times,
but always went back to Slackware. It just seems easier to me.
The answer to your question, though, to be fair is at least partly
due to the number of RH users. Also, I think Slackware users tend
to be more experienced. I won't argue that last point, however.
Either distribution, or any of several others, should give good
results. Linux is, after all, Linux. The GNU software that supports
it is the same.
Whichever you use, enjoy :)

After carefully re-reading your original post, I don't think you want, or will
be happy with Linux, because It WILL require you to think outside the box. it
has a rather steep learning curve for those not practiced in Unix, and though it
is a very capable OS, I still use, and will continue to use Win95 for most
games, and the thing that your family want's to do, for the most part are much
better supported by 3rd party devlopement software efforts through the popular
equipment package OS. Bottom line: You can either continue to pay for your OS,
and pay someone else to develope it for you as they think you will want,
(whether they're right about your preferences or not), or you can learn to do it
yourself, which isn't an easy job. You wouldn't be alone, but Bill Gates won't
be there to hold your hand, and his money will cause many software (and
hardware) companies to ignore you also if you choose Linux. Linux is much better
suited (right now), for server type apps, which won't require untrained persons
to have to interact with it. I'm not against Linux in any way, but if you
choose to use it, I think you deserve to know the truth going in... If you were
to go to a typical nursing home or kindergarten, and get a sampling of the
people there for training them to use Linux or Win9x, you will certainly have a
much easier time with Win9x group. I hope you appreciate my candor, as I wasn't
trying to draw flames, and I'm not giving up on Linux either, but it isn't ever
going to be easy, just cheap :-)) You can ALWAYS find a way to get Linux to do
whatever you want it to, if you are willing to work hard enough!

I got it to work today by diabling PnP and both comm ports in BIOS. I'm sure
it has to do with the fact that both my modem and AWE 64 are Plug and Pray
cards. Please excuse me for answering my own post. I thought my (apparent)

Yes I too am experiencing trouble with an SMC Ether EZ. This card ran
fine under a Windows installation but eth0 fails to initialize at boot.
I notice that when the bootup messages scroll by that autoprobe detects
the card, the following line gives the irq and io range for the card all
of which concurs with my previous Windows setup. I have cleaned all
other OS from my system and run only Linux (Caldera) 1.3 woth
appropriate linux partitions by the book. Everything else seems to work
fine.
P.S. Do you know how to 'capture' the bootup output into a file?
i tried > /etc/report.txt 2>&1 but didn't get what I expected.
Any help on either of these topics would be great.

CDROM - 32X - $66
Total - $623
And good luck
Buy RH 5.2 and install in 30 mins.
The problem with comparing pre bundled systems is that you
can't really pick and choose. Most of these places give you
a good processor or DVD or somthing and then fill the rest
of the box with difficult to use components.
Of course you will need to factor in shipping so you need to find
no so much the best prices but the place that has the best
overall prices and buy as many components there to reduce the
costs. The case is normally the biggest cost so is you can source
that locally then you end up saving a big chunk.
www.dynastyexpress.com seems to always come up on my radar
screen when I use the best overall filter. It's a bummer it's in AL
'cause it takes 5 days on UPS ground to get here.
I've used micro-xpress, advanced pc hardware in the past - no probs.
The other thing to be careful about is wether you get the "retail" or the
"OEM" package. The retail package usually costs a little more but
you get to participate in the rebates if any.
It can take quite a bit of research to make sure you're getting what
you want.
