At least you have Cable Modems, Telewest in the UK have been promising them
for the last couple of years - still waiting! I really don't understand their
attitude, especially as they are US Cable Co owned (well majority share).

Parallel port systems are mostly supported, I think. Not as well
as direct floppy-controlled drives. Have you checked the ftape
home page, or the ftape mailing list? Not all drives work; I have
an old Colorado 'Jumbo 1400'. It seems to have fallen through the
cracks. Some of the newer drives (e.g. Ditto) take a lot of
resources to work properly, and will only work on the fastest machines.

You didn't say anything about your distribution. If you are running
Debian, look for the package 'dump'. It should be in the utils
section. Sorry, don't know about RH or Slackware or SUSE or Caldera...

I don't think K6's are designed to support SMP. You cannot plug any CPU in
a motherboard with two or four CPU slots and expect it to work. The SMP
supporting logic which is embedded in every Intel chip is one of the reasons
why Intels are more expensive.

I tend to agree with you . . it seems that a RAM-RAM transfer is the
fastest (i.e. when the file is cached) . . and drive activity
definitely eats into the thru-put.
Do you think it's a coincidence that the Utilization lamp bar graph on
the FE104 Hub has four lamps . . 1% 10% 20% 30% ??
My transfers ramp up between 25-27 Mbps . . and the LED lamps run up
to 20% . . and the 30% lamp 'flickers' as the transmission rate
fluctuates!! I have asked Baynetworks (NetGear) why the Utilization
lamps stop at 30% and don't continue up to 100%.

I agree, it just works. I have a WinChip 200 in my file server, and just
reviewed a WinChip 240. Its slower than an M2 or K6-2, but will work in older
motherboards.

Hello everyone.
I have an ensoniq audio pci (1370), Red Hat 5.2.
I get pcm audio files to play just fine, but no midi. I have mpu401
compiled as a module (default with RH 5.2, right?) Any use of
/dev/sequencer gives me "device invalid or busy". It has the proper
permissions set.
If I have to recompile the kernel, what exactly should I choose? I've
read that some sound modules already have mpu401 taken care of and in
this case one shouldn't use the mpu401 module ... can someone tell me
what is the case with Audio PCI (1370)? Or is there something else
wrong?
If I try "insmod mpu401" I get

Sounds like you don't have any memory at all now...
Most computers these days won't start without a minimum of 1 meg of RAM..

What OpenGL ?
The main problem of OpenGL is to share the hardware video chip with X11.
I know at least 4 implementation of OpenGL for Linux.
MESA : the only one free
I think this lib has 3 mode:
1) pure software for the 3D part , so any 2D with board Xfree86
support is good.
2) On top of a Linux port of GLIDE, so 3DFX should be 3D
accelerated. (I have not investigated too much in that part)
3) On top of a interface called GGI. there should be alpha drivers
for 3dlabs card last time I checked.
the 3 others are commercial products still at the beta stage.
http://www.conix3d.com/Linux/Linux.html
http://www.metrolink.com/extreme3d/index.html
http://www.xig.com/dev/td.html
The 2 last products need their own X11 server and their own drivers.
a Linux 3D page : http://www.gamers.org/dEngine/xf3D/
Exept for conix3d wich come from macintosh, all seems to have in common
support for 3dlabs.
The remaining problem is that permedia 2 (diamond fire gl 1000, creative
labs gaphic blaster exxtreme) is the old product and will
be replaced by permedia 3 in 99. (was expected q4 98).

This exact thing with HP 8100i has happened to me when using a noname
CD-R for a dollar and 50 cents. Verbatim and HP CD-Rs that cost some
70 cents more work fine. I burned on Win95 though. And certainly you
have not used CD-RWs, have you?
Good luck

Subject: WinModems - any work being done for Linux?
Date: Wed, 23 Dec 1998 10:28:19 +0000
Recently made the annoying discovery that the modem in my Dell is a USR
Sportster 56x2 WinModem - which doesn't work under Linux. My
understanding
of WinModems is that all the hardware is there, it should (in theory)
just be a case
of writing the right software... admittedly very low level, but...
Question: is anyone working on drivers for such devices? Is there
sufficient
information in the public domain for this to be possible, or are
USR/3COM and
other Winmodem manufacturers not releasing the relevant technical
details?
Cheers

No. This question has been answered quite a few times. Try searching
on dejanews (www.dejanews.com) for the answer. Hint: framebuffers
: Both AGP and PCI versions???
There are no fundemental differences between AGP and PCI. Any
differences would not cause one video card to work but not another.
