Using Logitech Mouseman (ps2) I have problems with mouse behavior using anything
other than 24 bit color. I would prefer to use 16 bit because I believe it to be
less demanding of resources however I have no mouse cursor in that res. Any
ideas?

Well, considering that my mail exchangers (and primary/secondary DNS)
are a 486 and a VAX (see http://web.irtnog.org/about/nodes.html ;-]),
heck yeah, a AXPpci33 should work just fine as a mail/Quake server.
Probably could do NIS and SMB/NFS on it, without loading it down too
heavily.

I've got an AlphaStation 200 that's the NIS master, NFS server, SMB
server (NT primary domain controller), AppleShare server, etc. I
don't think I've ever heard the machine really thrash, even when I go
to start up EMACS.

GK> The list of hardware in the design guide is quite out of date,
GK> I'm sure I could pick up a case, 4 gig SCSI2 drive, and some
GK> cheap ass 64 bit video card and have something that works.

If you're going to stuff this into a closet somewhere (going to be a
server, right?), why bother with a video card at all? Recent Linux
kernels can do serial console, and firmware knows to talk to COM1 when
a keyboard isn't plugged in; spring a couple of bux for an old WY50 or
VT200 (or a serial cable to another computer) and you'll be in
business.

It depends on what you want to do. I use the AlphaStation as a
workstation, too, so I went ahead and bought a monitor and video
card. I've got a Stealth 64, but I'd recommend you avoid S3-based
cards. I've had nothing but problems with X and the Stealth 64.

A really good idea would be to spend money on memory and storage
space. 64 Mbytes is a minimum, in my opinion.

Disconnect the CD-ROM and try again. Some ATAPI CD-ROMS are not compatible

Hi,

me too i had some trouble trying to install from a CD-ROM , you
should try to ask the compagny web page of your cd-rom if they can
help you out, or try to install it from floppy disk insted of your
cd-rom.

Or try to find someone with the same cdrom that had succesfuly
install minix or linux.

Check your font path in /etc/XF86Config, and make sure that the 100 dpi fonts
come first. Then add something like this to ~/.Xdefaults

Netscape*fontList: -adobe-helvetica-bold-r-normal-*-14-*-75-*-*-*-*-*

Also in the preferences dialog you should tell netscape to always use your fonts.

sbpcd=0x230,SoundBlaster

Try a few variations on that. LaserMate might be worth a try in place of

I bought one of this laptop modems which use a Lucent LT16XXX winmodem
chip "because they fit so smart into my laptop". If anything, that
Lucent is able to say, is: "there are NT drivers available" I think that
my next modem will NOT be one with a Lucent (or whatever) winmodem chip.
And of course Lucent can be sure that I will not suggest my customers,

I think, that releasing enough information that the linux community can
develope such a driver will be a good deal for Lucent.

Yes, some sites use small fonts, these can be ugly or unreadable sometimes. I
installed a TrueType font server for X-Windows (xfstt), and at this moment I
use verdana (ttf) for variable font, and courier (adobe) 18 pnts for fixed.
Most text on these sites is still small, but quite readable now. It certainly
was a big improvement over the standard variable font netscape used.

When I try to install my sound card I am getting an error message
saying unable to ... /dev/audio I was told that I need to enable to
AUDIO and DSP support. How do I go about doing that???
I had this sound card working fine but quit working when I upgraded my PC
with a different hard drive, motherbord and new CPU. Since then the card has
not worked. I did a clean install. I did not have any problems with the old
one.. what could be wrong now. This setup was perviously using win98 and
worked fine...

Thanks,

Asim

If you're a newbie I would recommend using X window's *graphical*
Linuxconf.

I can guide you through (short version):
1) Use Disk Druid when installing
2) Have some "Divide & Impera" on your harddrive (partitions would be: 1
linux native, 1 linux swap (optional), 1 extended (don't worry about
this), at least 1 DOS FAT16 >32megs
3) Install LILO IN THE MAIN BOOT SECTOR
4) Go to the linuxconfig's LILO part
5) Select "LILO defaults"
6) Set the time settings in rational delays
7) Select "Extra options"
8) set root partition to your linux partition
9)Accept changes
10)Select "LILO linux configurations"
11)Add
12)Use /boot/vmlinuz-2.0.36-0.7 as your kernel image
13)select the linux partition as your root partition
14)select "LILO other OSs configurations"
15)Add
16)Use your windows partition as the boot partition
17)name the boot selections wisely and accept the changes you haven't
accepted yet
18)write reboot in the shell and let the machine reboot
19)then you should see the LILO prompt, Answer with a label you gave to
an OS
20) enjoy

Uh is it Plug 'n' Pray? That should be the problem. And then you should
have some support from the kernel...
