In some howto or faq it was openly stated that PS/2 mouse doesn't get
along with X. I don't quite remember where it was, but I clearly
remember what was said. The recommended action was using a serial mouse
if possible.
(On the other hand there are quite a few people out there using PS/2
mouse. They don't use X? :)
Good luck,

Microsoft's documentation for main doesn't mention void main, but
many (most?) of the examples do use void as the return type.

Kernel 2.2.4 support the ensonique chipset on the pci64 card. Try out
the test mentioned in the kernel help. It's a driver calles 1370 or
1371, you must find out which chipset is on your card. Then it should
work nice!

I have just bought a Promice Ultra66 IDE controler card for my linux box. I
bought a new HDD which had support for 66 Mb/S and so I thought that this
card might improve performance. I have performed some tests on it and my
disk read speeds have gone down from ~9 to ~4. I had to use some kernel
params to get it to work at all (ide2=0x6000,0x6102).
The Ultra DMA howto seems to say that the kernel should have built in
support for UDMA 33 and I wonderd if it has / will have any support for the
new standard.

Could anyone answer a question on how to remove Linux / LILO from
the boot sector of a hard drive?
I am trying to re-install DOS on a small hard drive that has Red
Hat 4.X on the boot sector. I have tried a DOS FDISK to delete
all partitions, a DOS format, and a Red Hat setup / delete
partition to delete Linux...and it still boots Linux! Help!
I have Linux on another machine (and am quite happy with it)but
want to turn another into a DOS only PC to run some old apps and

Hello I have recently installed Sound Blaster Live ( PCI )sound card on my

which does not load, in start up process, I see this massage : "could not

before SMARTDRV.EXE or minimizing Vdisk RAM." Even when I started up my
computer using step by step confirmation, sbeinit.com started to load before
smartdrv.exe but anyway did not load, and I got the same above massage, and
of course hearing a long beep. Is anyone knows about this problem, I would
appreciate it if I get your reply. Any thought ?? Thanks. Manou

It is explained in the Busmouse-HOWTO. You might already have that file
on your system in a place like /usr/doc/faq/howto/Busmouse-HOWTO.gz.
Otherwise, search among the howtos on the net.

Subject: Sound Card advice?
Date: Sat, 10 Apr 1999 21:21:21 +0100
Hi,
I've currently got a crappy old ESS688 based sound card, with half
duplex 8-bit sound, crappy/no midi interface-ness, (at least, under Linux)
and a really shoddy games port which gives wobbly results (I'd thought it
was the joystick at fault first, and bought a new one. D'oh!).
So anyway, I'm itching for a new one, which I would also like to run DOS
and Windoze games on (Hey, I do still have some) as well as using Linux with
it.
I've got my choices down to:
Soundblaster AWE 32/64
Soundblaster PCI 64
Soundblaster PCI 128
Soundblaster Live (except I wouldn't be able to use it yet).
I know for Linux, the AWE 32/64 are same. I know there are no drivers yet
for the Live (and by the time there are some, it may well be obsoleted by
the SB PCI Really-very-very-good-and-realistic 16384 or whatever). I know
little about the PCI 64 &128 except they're *supposed* to be supported by
Linux.
I'm not sure about the AWE 64 because I hate ISA and I *really* hate
ISAPNP, after bad experiences with it. But I get the impression that the
sound processing on it is better than the PCI 64/128.
What sort of midi do they have? Nicely processed?Well supported under
Linux? Are the cards reliable/ well detected under Linux at all, as I've
heard lots of people on this NG asking about how to get their kernel to
detect them, or whatever.
Any advice on quality, support, 1st hand knowledge/experience, etc would
be VERY welcome. <As would insider knowledge of quality/progress of SBLive
driver ;) >
Oh yeah. FYI, I've currently got kernel 2.0.34, in a heavily hacked
reprocessed old slackware. I've got a copy of the 2.2.2 kernel, but haven't
installed yet due to sorting out all the stuff it depends on. I'm working on
it.

in the "Device" section of your XF86Config add
Option "sw_cursor"
It is a problem with (some??) Matrox Millennium cards losing sync while

Yes, indeed external servers are supported. You've even got several
choices.
I'm using a Netgear PS104 which is a combination 4-port Ethernet hub and
single-port print server. I'm using it with an Epson Color Stylus 400.
Basically Linux sees this as an LPD server. I bought this little box
for under $100 at http://www.buycomp.com. I've got my 3 PCs all
connected to the hub, and all can print to the printer. One's running
W98, one W95, and one is running RedHat Linux (currently the rawhide
release).
With Samba, you can drive SMB-based printers as well. I don't have any
experience with these.

If the file system of the zip disk is NTFS, linux can read it only (with
a 2.2 kernel). Write is possible but very buggy and risky.
If the file system of the zip disk is FAT, Linux can write and read from
the disk with absolutely no problem at all.
Just make sure that support for the file system is compiled into kernel.

I'm trying to find a 56K modem that will work under linux. I checked the
"Linux modems list," aka "Winmodems are not modems," and discovered that the
3com / USRobotics Sportster 56K, model 1785, allegedly works fine.
The problem is that I can't find any of these being sold anywhere. The
closest model number I can find is 1787, and I can't find any technical
details that tell if this one would probably be compatible, too. I'm curious
if anyone else out there has had any success with this model.
Also, if you know of another 56K modem that works well with linux, I wouldn't
mind hearing about that, either.
thanks in advance for any advice,
rob kent

The M571 contains the SiS 5597/5598 chipset, which is being supported
by the latest XFree86 (3.3.3.1). See www.xfree.org and in particular
www.xfree.org/cardlist.html
In case you are having trouble getting the M571 audio to work, check
out the mini-HOWTO at

Hey, i'm a newbie, so i apologize for any idiocy in this post...
i'm getting a new modem and wanted to know if the Diamond SupraExpress 56 PC
is compatable with linux... 3com ones are too expensive... it doesn't seem
to be a winmodem and its not PCI based either, so i think it should work...i
just want to know if anyone has successfully used one of these modems in
their linux systems yet..
thx

If Linux is still there, use lilo -U. If it's already gone, use FDISK
/MBR to rewrite the master boot record.
