Hi!

I've got Zoom V90 2985 USB modem. I read somewhere it should work with
Linux. I have Mandrake 7.2, kernel 2.2.17 that I recompiled to have the USB
support. (in config for USB questions answered YES). Everything was OK. I
launched command that I read in some kind USB Howto: mknod /dev/usb/ttyACM0
c 166 0. Made link from /dev/usb/ttyACM0 to /dev/modem and with minicom I
can ring anybody I want. The modem works fine. But... with kppp it's not so
easy. It doesn't want any additional ppp stuff because I already installed
them. When I set my connection up and make him connect the modem forgets to
dial the number... well it starts to give its noises as if it has dialed and
connected. When I try to connect one more time the kppp gives command
ATZATM0L1 and waits for OK that modem doesn't want to say. It looks like
kppp isn't patient enough because as far as I know it should first say ATZ,
then ATM0L1 or something. So nothing happens. I tried to switch different
things in kppp setup but didn't help at all. I changed once this end of line
from CR/LF to LF and instead of ATZATM0L1 it wrote ATZ which should be fine
but no OK was given by modem.
I read somewhere but it's good to patch kernel 2.2.17 with 2.2.18 pre-patch
but I don't know if my problem has anything to do with kernel. (BTW I don't
know how to patch kernel... although I know how to compile it... ;))

Please help me because modem is the only thing that keeps me using ms wind.
:)
Thanks in advance.

Dear all,

I have install RedHat 6.2 on my IBM ThinkPad 765L, config as below :-

Pentium 166MMX
80MB RAM
3GB HD
CDROM
Xircom IIPs 10Mbps ethernet card

However I found that the ping become slower and slower even I ping my own IP
address.
The first turnaround time is 0.4ms
The second is 4000ms
The third is 8000ms
The 4th is 16000ms
The 5th is 20000ms

Any one know what is the problem and any suggestion ?

Many thanks,

I'm over my head here but here's what I know/found:
I don't know what DNS means.
/etc/resolv.conf is an empty file.
route -n gives me a destination IP, which I can ping and get responses in
the 25-35 second range.
ifconfig -a gives me the same IP address as above, calling it a point to
point address, and another IP address under an Inet heading. I can also
ping that with similar results as above.
Trying to ping a URL (with or without 'http://') gives an 'unknown host'
message.

What do I do next? And is there documentation/book somewhere that would
help me understand these mysteries? Thanks.

I'm using the 0.47 acenic driver on kernel 2.4.0-test11, for a Netgear
GA620 card, but it just causes the system to hang.
Anyone else have this problem?

Thabks for the recommendations. It loks as if Amanda is the way to go
(at first, anyway) because the ability to backup a PC via SAMBA would
be very useful.

I have an Epox board with the VIA 686 south bridge. My sound now works
perfectly thanks to ALSA, but I'm having serious difficulties with getting
the sensors package to work. I tried the rpms on the CDs first, but the
necessary modules i2c-viapro and i2c-riva weren't there. I downloaded a
vanilla kernel (same 2.2.16) and i2c compiled perfectly, but lm_sensors
gives an error about no rule to make 'kernel/chips/8390.ver' ?!?!

Can anybody just email me / post me the addrsss of these modules in binary
form for i386 (specifically Duron 700)??

Thanks,

Giles.

PS I'm using the latest version of i2c and lm_sensors downloaded from the
net - 2.4.5?

I got a USB cd burner (8230e) and I want to get it to work
with linux. www.linux-usb.org says that it works fine with linux, but
I am not sure how. I think I need the kernel 2.4 test 10 or later,
and some flag in some makefile, but I don't know what, or which. I
run caldera 2.4, but am planning to install RH 7 also. Does anyone
know how to get this burner working?

Not good. This should have your nameservers in there, so that hostnames
can be resolved to numeric IP addresses. I would suspect that somehow
you don't have the client configured just quite right, as it should be
grabbing this info.

You can edit this file with any text editor and add them in like:

[hal@feenix hal]$ cat /etc/resolv.conf
search bellsouth.net
nameserver 205.152.32.20
nameserver 205.152.133.254

(Just an example)

I am finding this for bellatlantic.net:

ns1.bellatlantic.net 199.45.32.40

There are probably others. You really only need one, working one. The
second is a backup.

I beg your pardon but... what's "iirc"? I'm not an english speaker so I

And I've seen that the information is mostly from 1999. Then, I

Will it be easy for the Linux to offer IP-masquerading (share the adsl

You only have to look thru this ng over the past month or two to see several
of us
having had grief with big IDE disks recently. Check all the posts with
ATA-100 or IDE in them ...

Is this disk on an offboard controller ?

Basically, RH7 and 2.2.16-22 won't see a disk on an offboard controller
without some fannying around.
It is doable, I did it by moving disks around to install RH, then adding
append lines to lilo.conf.

You may need to upgrade your mobo bios as well ...

I was given an IBM PC 750 (not the laptop, a desktop) by a
former client and have loaded Debian Linux updated to 2.2 on
it. It had some kind of LAN connection in its former home,
and I would like to establish one now between it and a Windows
98 machine. Obviously it would be good to know what the LAN
board in the Linux machine is, but it would be inadvisable to
call the former client, as the machine was "forgotten" by an
underling, rather than overtly donated through official
channels. Are there any utilities which could tell me what
I've got? Alternatively, if I take the machine apart and
examine the board physically, what should I look for?
