As you saw with my problem (In thread from 11. april), the reported speed
changed when I changed it in the scsi-bios. At first when it was untouched it
reported 20MB/s and the scsi-bios said 80MB/s. When I lowered it to 10MB/s it
also reported 10MB/s.

For a more reliable test one could better use bonnie, a program
written ages ago by Tim Bray. I put it on my webpage for you to grab:

   http://people.a2000.nl/dbijwaar/bonnie.c

I also put my own results there.

   http://people.a2000.nl/dbijwaar/bonnie.results

Note that you need to run bonnie with at least twice as much harddisk
space as your main memory, to avoid cache reads messing up the results.
The disksize can be set in the size variable in the main{} function.

I have a question for anyone out there. Next year I'm heading off to
college and i was thinking about buying a laptop, because i plan on taking
my other computer (a mac running linux) i thought a pc laptop would save a
lot of space. My question is, i would be using the laptop to run linux and
do devolopement. So i would need somehting that could handle X Windows,
handle sound, and graphics. Have a floppy and cdrom, around 64-96MB
memory. Im thinking a pentium II type processor. Anyway my question is,
where could i find a nice laptop for around 2,000 - 3,000 dollars, that
will run linux beutifully? Thanks in advance.

One possible source is Broadaxe Systems, Inc. I think they offer
a version of the Sager computer.

http://www.industrial-portable.com/notebook/np6600/np6500_intro.htm

I haven't tried their product, but the do offer RedHat 5.1 in their
operating system selection.

Good luck,

I set up a real dumb terminal by replacing a "mingetty" line
in /etc/inittab with this:

6:2345:respawn:/sbin/getty ttyS1 2400,4800,9600 tvi921c

The "agetty" program might be good too. It's simpler. Both have man pages.

I suppose you just do this on both computers.

If it isn't explicitly documented as supported then it isn't supported.

hello,

First, make sure your kernel has support for /dev/psaux compiled in. I
think it's in by default, but you might wanna check. I don't recall the
exact name of that parameter in the kernel (I'm hacking on my
girlfriend's computer pending my upgrade) but it's pretty obvious. I
think you also need "user misc device drivers" support also, not sure.
Can't hurt.

Second, if you want it to work under X, make sure GPM isn't being loaded
first. Dunno why, but for some reason GPM breaks PS/2 under X. Works
okay with serial, but not busmice or PS/2.

Third, make sure your xf86config points to /dev/psaux. I've had bad
luck with the symlinks from /dev/mouse to /dev/psaux. It's supposed to
work...but you know how that goes........

Hope this helps,
Dan

Thank you Howard for this description!

Sorry, but I don't use an Intel _BX_ chipset and in the BIOS setup there
isn't LBA enabled for this harddisk. I'm affraid that your explanation
wouldn't be a solution for my partition-table-problem.

Thanks again!

hello,

I was running 2.2.3 with a parport zipdrive (old PPA) and a dot matrix
printer on the same parport. No probs at all. In 2.0.34, I had to swap
modules around every time I wanted to do something. I actually managed
to have a module-less kernel...then ripped the thing apart and sent the
brains off to Mom...am now awaiting new motherboard......:(...it's an
