Take a look at IBMs 14GXP series. Models include, 9GB, 10.1GB, 12GB and
14.4GB. All drives at 7200RPM, extremely fast, very high reliablity and
overclocking friendly.
Quantums are cheap but i've had sveral fail on me recently.

ATI is known for having poor support under linux for some of their cards.
Consider a better supported card like the Matrox G200 series or G100 series.

PS/2 port mouse may be a better idea.

Try to get a powersupply that is at least 250W, 300W being the ideal.

This is what my configuration looks like under 2.0.36... Haven't
upgraded to 2.2.6 yet, but I hope this helps. Also, keep in mind that I
have a FirePort 40, so the MHz field is gonna be 20 for you.

The generic SCSI tape driver works just fine with DLT drives.
Load it (if you have it as a module) and use the device file
/dev/st0 (or /dev/nst0 ) to access the drive.

Subject: ATI All in Wonder PCI 8MB Card-Can only get standard vga display in Linux
Date: Sun, 18 Apr 1999 14:19:46 GMT

I downloaded the lastest xfree86 namely 3.3.3.1 with the latest mach
64 driver but cannot get more than the standard vga display 640 x 480
which is not adequate for x.

I even downloaded the commercial demo from Xi graphics, and installed
it, and this only brings up a blank screen.

When I use the X server and when I run XF86Setup and configure it for
the card and the driver for even 800 x 600 display, when it brings up
the screen in x, it is totally unusable, it flickers and sometimes the
screen is split into sections. I have tried all different
combinations including trying to use the SVGA instead of the mach 64
all to no avail. The only display that works is the standard vga.

I would appreciate any input on this and if someone perhaps has this
card and has gotten it to work, I would like to see the config file.
The monitor I am using is a multi frequency monitor with the range of
30-64 and 50-110 which is what I enter when running XF86Setup. I have
tried the presets for the monitor and these bring up no screen at all.

The ATI card has built in ramdac and built in clock speeds, so no
settings are supposedly required when running XF86Setup, but I am
wondering if there are some settings that must be manually entered to
make it work and take advantage of its capabilities instead of being
limited to standard vga in Linux x.

There has to be something wrong since even the commercial server
doesn't work which I would consider purchasing if it worked.

Thanks for any help

PartitionMagic 4.0 (by PowerQuest) supports Linux ext2 ans swap partitions as
well as many others (NT, Win98, etc.). I was able to resize and move several
Linux partitions, including the root partition, non-destructively. It took
maybe 15 minutes, not including the installation time for PartiionMagic
itself. I ran PartitionMagic under Win98 on a dual-boot machine and pointed it
to my dedicated Linux drive -- it sounds like your setup is similar to mine.

I'm not sure whether you can use this product on a machine that doesn't also
have a copy of DOS or Windows (NT, 95 or 98). However, a recent announcement
about Caldera OpenLinux 2.2 noted that PowerQuest partitioning software is
included. It wasn't clear whether this was PartitionMagic or a similar product
from the same company.

Hi all,
My apologies if this is not entirely on-topic - please feel free to push
me in another direction if you wish. I would like to know what would happen
in this situation:
Current hard disk configuration:

Device Start End
/dev/hda1 1 261 Win 95 Primary (C:)
/dev/hda2 262 1022 Extended
/dev/hda5 262 522 Win 95 (Logical) (D:)
/dev/hda6 523 783 Win 95 (Logical) (E:)
/dev/hda7 784 1022 Win 95 (Logical) (F:)

What if I now use Linux's fdisk (or cfdisk) to change the bounds of the
enclosing extended partition - ie: change /dev/hda2 to start at 262 and end
at 783? Would this leave D: and E: intact (including all their data), and
then exclude what used to be F: from the extended zone so that I can now
reformat it (as a Linux partition, say, or a Solaris one)? Or (more likely I
guess) will changing /dev/hda2's size just trash D: and E: (and F:)? Any
thoughts are much appreciated.

James.

Sounds like you need to play detective and find out where the conflict/s are
comming from.
You can do this buy browsing through the resources in /proc, or by using an
aftermarket
utility like Checkit.

It would make sense to turn the "PnP OS" option in your CMOS off. I dont think
Linux does
PnP very well. Although, there is an option in the 2.2 kernel config to search
for PnP devices.
Maybe you should try turning this on.

To me it rather seems that this particular driver does not support it
(maybe the other NON-OSS as well). I had a SB16-clone at first (a
cheap card that choose to die) and has /dev/sndstat with it even under
2.2.x, but when I switched to the SB 64 PCI (with Ensoniq 1372)
/dev/sndstat gives me:

cat: /dev/sndstat: Operation not supported by device

when I try a cat /dev/sndstat.

When I compile OSS/free-support it just reports that that it has no
drivers compiled in and therefor nothing configured althought the card
works well. Remember that the card does not belong to OSS/free, it
just has a very similar API.

You don't mention the versions of kernel and fdisk, but with fdisk v2.8 you
can go
into its 'expert' menu and change the number of cylinders fro 1024 to the
correct
value for your drive. Then return to the main menu and you'll be able to
create
partitions above cyl 1024. There's no provision for resizing or moving
however -
you'd have to delete and re-create.

Hi,
Read help files for the kernel configuration for ncr53c8xx and
sym53c8xx drivers and read /usr/src/linux/drivers/scsi/README.ncr53c8xx.
A cook book answer is try ncr53c8xx driver. sym53c8xx driver will also
work for you if your sym53c810a chipset revision is >=0x10.

i know there are tons of simlar posts on the various linux groups (and i

configurations, i still can't get this problem fixed. i know the solution
is probably very simple, but i can't find it, or i didn't recognize it
among the other posts %^P

i've got redhat5.2 on a 7G maxtor drive as the ide1 primary master.

i've got win98 installed on a 4G fujitsu drive and is the ide1 primary
slave.

linux boots up fine via lilo, but when i try to boot windows, it hangs.

probably relevant: i disabled the win98 drive when i installed linux on the
other drive so that it wouldn't mess it up. i'm assumming this means that
lilo misconfigured itself when it installed, not knowing about win98.

if i disable the linux drive in bios, windows fires right up.

i know this is an easy one for a lilo guru, and i will be indebted to the
person that helps me out here : )

Very badly one would expect. My writing was atrocious when I
was born too.

Subject: Multivolume archives DDS (2) streamers

Hi!

Did anyone manage to do multivolume backups on a HP-C1533A (DDS2) with
hardware compression enabled or on any other tape with hardware compression?
If so, how did you configure the tape driver?

On my machine (with linux 2.2.6), the tape driver seems to reports a wrong
(too high) block number at the end of the tape. This can be tested by writing
until the tape is full and then comparing the block number reported by `mt
status' and that reported by `mt tell'. As far as I know, the former reports
the tape driver's idea of the current block, while the latter explicitely asks
the streamer.

Do you get any error messages when positioning the tape with mt?

Did you try the special SCSI vesion mt-st (should be available at sunsite in
/pub/Linux/system/backup or so).
