Subject: "Sequencer Ram Parity Error" for 2940UW?
Date: Tue, 20 Apr 1999 16:09:15 -0700

Can anybody explain what this message means?

This is a Power Macintosh G3 (gray, not blue-and-white) with Adaptep
2940UW card, flashed to latest ROM. I'm installing LinuxPPC 4.1, and
early on in the sequence, I get the usual messages

(scsi0) <Adaptec AHA-294x Ultra SCSI host adapter> found at PCI 13/0
(scsi0) Wide Channel, SCSI ID=7, 16/255 SCBs
(scsi0) Downloading sequencer code... 419 instructions downloaded

followed by the most UNUSUAL message,

(scsi0) BRKADRINT error (0x8)
  Sequencer Ram Parity Error

after which the install hangs.

Presumably this is a hardware problem with the card? An improper setting
on the card? (There isn't that much on the card which you can set!!)

The card seems to work fine with MacOS, but of course that doesn't mean
much; it's pretty uncritical.

Any ideas or explanations?

Thanks!

Subject: is there a PCI modem that does work?
Date: Mon, 19 Apr 1999 21:26:01 GMT

Ok, I've read all the posts about internal PCI modems being pieces of crap
winmodems, etc...the problem I have is that I have a 2U rackmount ATX case
that only allows me 2 pci cards as internal devices, the ISA slots are not
usable. We're putting these in at our co-locator.

We don't have room to use an external modem, not even by strapping it on the
side or something, because we're using every inch of our rack space. An
external modem is, unfortunately, just not an option.

So, I've heard about (although not directly) people who have gotten an
internal PCI modem to work with linux. If anyone has done this and can tell
me the exact brand and model I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

Some time ago I posted a request for help with my Biostar M5ATA motherboard,
whose clock wouldn't run (seconds wouldn't advance on CMOS setup screen; Linux
hwclock program froze, preventing normal bootup).

I eventually discovered the source of the problem and fixed it myself, but
forgot to post a followup message on the outcome. Someone wrote me recently
asking for more info, which prompted me to follow through with that.

It turned out not to be a problem with the motherboard after all, just with the
way I installed it (how embarrassing)-- I put it into a 486 case, which had a
mounting post in a place where there is not a matching screw-hole on the
Biostar. So that mounting post was apparently touching, and grounding, some
lead on the board, that affected the clock. When I finally noticed that and
removed that mounting post, it worked fine!

So the Biostar M5ATA is hereby vindicated, with my sincere apology for blaming
it. I've had no other problems with it, and wouldn't hesitate to buy another
Biostar.

Anybody else have this one? Using a (non-GX) ViRGE card, my fonts go
ka-blooey in X (all graphics are fine) but only when I'm running
Netscape! If I exit N'scape, the X window has the same problem. Back
to console and all looks good. Startx again, all is good. Run Netscape
again, all is good - for a while (sometimes a minute or two and
sometimes a hour or more) then...KABLOOY!!! Fonts go all to hell again.

Suggestions?

Subject: Problems with Dell 486 -- partially solved...
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Mon, 19 Apr 1999 22:47:05 GMT

I picked up an old Dell 486 to use as a router/packet filter and
discovered some odd problems when I went to start with the boot
floppies -- all of the boot floppies I have (several versions of
Redhat and Debian) do something funky with the video card while
loading root.bin or lomem.bin. Linux seems to load, but the video
seems to get turned onn somewhere during the process.

A search of Deja News reveals that this is a known problem with no
known solution. (If there is one, I didn't find it.)

I wound up yanking the disk from the Dell and putting it in another
machine to install Linux (Debian, as it turns out, RedHat won't
install in less than 150 megs.) When the installed disk was placed
back in the Dell, Deban came up fine.

I'm posting this for several reasons:

1. If someone knows the solution, hopefully they will tell me.

2. This partial solution should get stored in the Deja News archives.
Hopefully it will help someone in the future.

3. It seems as if the problem is unique to the floppy bootstrap
loader. Perhaps someone can look into this and determine where
    the problem may be.

Hi Nicolas

Check the messages from X by the command
X >/tmp/out 2>&1
When I had the 320x200 screen, X didn't like my symbolic link to XCom_SiS.
So I saved XF86_SVGA and renamed XCom_SiS as XF86_SVGA.
And the rebuilt symbolic links X->XF86_SVGA for X.
In /etc/X11, I also found a symbolic link X->XF86_SVGA which my startx uses
and was probably built for me.

Try Suse 6.1, they've even written XFree86 drivers for SiS video card. It comes
with a decent manual and 4 cds with loads of software extras. I've just
recently bought it and had no trouble other than my Mwave card. (That's to be
ditched in the next day or so.)
They'll even give you 2 months e-mail support, which is just enough time to get
know what you really want to ask.

Good Luck

Out here where ComputerWarehouse is a local business (Sacramento, CA), it is
commonly referred to as Computer Whorehouse. Based on a comment from one of
their former employees, I went in with their ad in hand to get a great price
on a motherboard. "Oh, sorry, it isn't in stock, would you like this other
one instead?" I told them no and left. After about 10 minutes, a coworker of
mine went in without the ad, acted like he didn't know which motherboard he
wanted and worked it so that they sold him the one that was in the ad, but
for about $20 more. When he pulled the ad out of his pocket to get the sale
price, the sales clerk got pissed off at him.

They have a reputation for unethical/illegal practices, really poor technical
support and bad/used merchandise.

I have an Adaptec AHA3940 running Slackware in one system and an
Adaptec AHA3940AUW running RedHat5.2 in another machine...never
had any problems with either one. Both have worked with Plextor/Texel
CDROM drives, Goldstar CDROM drives, Quantum, Seagate, and IBM
Harddrives....I wouldn't use anything else.

I tend to use FDISK...always got annoyed with disk druid ;-)

BTW: last time I looked, the folks at RH had not updated their compatible
hardware pages in nearly a year...and some of the stuff they had there
looked like obsolete info even then...my Slackware system pre-dates
RH5 and it supported the 3940 board even then.

Check your drive settings (ID#, parity, termination, etc) then make sure you're
using fdisk properly...I doubt it's a hardware incompatability (unless the 3940UW
you're using has old firware...)

I've been using a Best Power Patriot Pro 400VA for about half a year now, and it's
come in handy on several occasions. It was easy to set up, and they even give
source code for their UPS monitoring software, which compiled cleanly. The specs
say up to 5 minutes of juice when the power goes out, but I've found that even with
the monitor on, it can actually provide up to 15 minutes!* At $179, it was a pretty
good bargain for me (a starving college student).

* note: if your box is running on UPS power and your monitor is off, DO NOT turn your
monitor on! I did once, and the power drain that it put on the UPS was too much, which
caused everything shut off, leading to fsck city.

Hope this helps,
