If you ever need to run Linux in that kind of environment, there
are some helpful hints. Most of us won't.

Here is response I got yesterday from creative..

Juha,

Definately go with the SB Live! card, its awesome. We currently are
working on Linux drivers for the card, they should be released hopefully
within the next few weeks. Keep checking our website to see if/when we
release the drivers.

Thank you for your interest in Creative:-)

Hey all,

I've seen some stuff floating around regarding Mandrake. Now, to my
understanding, Mandrake is Redhat 5.3 and supposedly it is out. However,
I visited the Redhat homepage and found nothing on it. If it is out,
where can I get a copy? Any help is much appreciated =)

yeah, the silencer is a nice power supply. A little expensive, but it barely
makes any noise at all. Probably a little louder then the sound from an idle
stereo, but hey, it's the best you're gonna get :-)
And try the soundblaster AWE64, I know linux has support for it.

Hello.

I know that XiGraphics has a commercial X server that seems to support the
ATI Rage Fury and Magnum boards. You can check out their website,
www.xigraphics.com, for demos. Also, you can try to use the Frame Buffer X
server as a temporary solution. I have written a document explaining how I
got my Ati Rage Magnum working at 1280x1024 @ 16 bit under X. It's located
here: http://www.0wned.org/~cain/ragefury.htm
Hope this helps you.

I am trying to install Red Hat v5.2 on a system with a Promise Ultra66
UDMA/66 interface card that has a 20.4GB Western Digital UDMA66 drive
attached to the primary interface. My problem is that the install will not
recognize the card and so I can't continue with the install on the hard
disk.

I understand that Red Hat v5.2 does not support the Ultra66, but I have also
understood that there is a way to force the installation to recognize the
card using some kernel parameters.

I am new to Linux and would appreciate any help I can get.

Hi,

I tried to install Linux Mandrake 5.3 on a PC with
a S3Trio3D AGP video card and a VGA 15'' monitor (unrecognized by the
system - manufacturer LG Electronics, Korea, model name CS545DM). I used
all the possible scripts I found (Xconfigurator,XF86Setup,...) but I
can't use the
display mode 1024x768 (Horz.freq 48.4Khz, Vert. freq 60Hz). It always
switches to a lower resolution.

Could anybody help me to configurate this video mode?

Thanks,

 Ftp into ftp.sunet.se/pub8/os/Linux/distributions/redhat.iso/ and
download the redhat
.iso to your hard drive. Make sure you don't use netscape or a html
browser to d-load it for I have found it somehow messes up my files? Use
and ftp prog. Took me bout 2 hours to d-load by dsl. (Almost 600 megs).
Open Ezcd creator, click on new, highlight from iso image, and burn. I
had no problem at all. Just inserted the cd afterwards and rebooted to
the cd as it will boot for install if your bios supports it, and away
you go! :-)

 Good luck.

Hello,
Has anyone had this problem ... I upgraded to the new 2.2.6 kernel and I
have lost the use of one serial port on my machine. It is a port that uses
a shared IRQ. If i reboot and go back to a 2.0.36 kernel it works fine. As
sson as I switch to the new kernel it gives and error "allready in use or
hardware problem". I have checked the irq and io port does not change...
and I am aware of the removal of the /dev/cua device and it is not related
to this. Any ideas? Thank you for your help.

I wouldn't buy one even if they were available. I've played with
wireless video sender/receivers, and they suck. I've played with phone
over electrical wire, and it sucks. When I need to hook my PCs
together, I drilled holes through the closet walls and ran Ethernet
patch cards through to a hub, and it all works well (as well as Windows
works that is :-)). I'll always recommend a tried and proven solution -
it's going to work, you're going to have less hassle, better
performance, and support down the road if you need it. I also think
it's cheaper in the long run.

Redhat's printtool supports this printer and it prints graphics without
any problems. I'm not sure what you use if you don't have Redhat's
distribution...

Hi all:

Sorry that I have to send this question thru mulitple NGs, because I have
already tried a few NGs independently and got no replies. If you have
already seen this somewhere else, please ignore.

I have a question regarding to my Linux installation. I installed Linux
over the weekend. The installation seemed to have gone thru smoothly. But
when I tried starting Xwindows, it complains about the mouse protocal can't
be found.
What I chose is MS mouse compatible on COM 1 (I am using a MS mouse v2
without the scrolling thing at the middle). I actually tried choosing other
mouse types (like generic) and other COM ports, but stilll get the same
message. I think the mouse kind of worked before I tried the Xwindows,
because when I shutdown the windows it was stuck at the gpm line until I
move the mouse.

I read thru the menu and stepped by a few web sites, but found nothing
regarding to this. Any suggestions?

Thanks very much in advance.

Patrick.

It's partially dependent on your Linux distribution. Go to Redhat's web
site and check out their compatibility lists that they've posted.
They're valid for version 5.2 but version 6.0 is rumoured to be released
by month's end so I'm assuming that they'll have new compatibility lists
out after that.

If you're close to making up your mind on what to buy, feel free to post
or search http://www.searchlinux.com for feedback.

The 2 biggest things to watch out for that aren't supported on Linux:
Soundblaster Live and Winmodems. SB Live cards may be supported in a
few months (CL is working on the driver). Winmodems likely won't be
supported by the time you're ready to buy (or in your lifetime...).

I've got an on-board sound chip that is supposed to be 100% Sound Blaster

work under LINUX even when I compile sound as a module instead of compiling
it directly into the kernel. I'm running SuSE 6.1 with kernel 2.2.6. If
anyone knows some tricks to get this to work with an on-board chip, please
let me know.

I've also heard good things about advansys cards (www.advansys.com)
which for the UW you should have to pay only about $70-80.

"We" should most certainly respect the programmers, and not mess with their,
uhm, prose. The reason, of course, being that the above gives a pretty good
idea of what the original programmer thought when she wrote the comment,
whereas "This hack is unfortunate, but was necessary due to a lack of foresight
when setting the default to a value less than 100" doesn't. Comments like
the above are also great teaching aids for beginners --- reading other
people's code is a great way to pick up programming techniques, and
reading other people's passionate comments is a great way to find out about
things to avoid.

ooops
silly me
thanks for all the email suggestions, everybody!

OK here are the things I have tried...

#1 disconnected all harddrives except for linux, and booted off a win98
bootdisk. I then ran 'fdisk /mbr'. This did not solve the problem

#2 set my 12 gig (hdd) to none in bios and booted. Windows loaded fine
which led me to a new train of thought...

(duh! can't have a cdrom as a master to a hardrive in windows-land)

#3 reversed hdd and hdc. Tried cdrom as slave and big fat32 12 gig as
master. Still an error booting into windows.

So now I have a rather big project on my hands. I think windoze is
having difficulty with a linux partition/drive sandwiched between two
fat32 drives. I am going to try making linux the Secondary master and
the cd the secondary slave. THis of course involves editing my
/etc/fstab and my lilo.conf. I hope there isn't anything I am
forgetting to edit, or else I have a long, ugly road ahead of me...
