MIDI support simply does not exist yet :-(
The f$%&*#@y (friendly) programmers at Creative haven't done it yet,
and Creative made it sure that nobody else can do it either.

Yeah, the 3c509 has been supported for ages. I *did* have trouble
getting a PnP version to run once (back in the 2.0.29 days I believe),
but IIRC I ended up just having to download a newer driver.

Subject: Xircom 10/100 + 56k PCMCIA card
Date: Sat, 21 Aug 1999 23:22:17 +0100

Hi,

I just got one of these on Friday and I'm having problems with it.

I have PCMCIA installed as a module and it pops up when I boot and it
recongnises the Xircom card.

However(!), I can't seem to access the card at all. As a modem, it links
it to /dev/ttyS3.

Anyone wanna try to get me out of a fix? I would really appreciate any
help offered to set the thing up properly. It is supported by the
current version of PCMCIA.

Many thanks,

Mike

The 3C509 is one of the commonest ISA ethernet cards around.AFAIK,
every Linux distribution includes support for this card, either
compiled into a kernel or as a loadable module.

However, you may need the DOS setup program if you don't have it
already. I suggest you reconfigure the card, switching off PnP and
setting IRQ and IO values manually. You get fewer problems that way.
You can get the 3Com config program from the 3Com website.

Subject: Software-RAID 5 on Linux SMP
Date: Mon, 23 Aug 1999 11:12:35 GMT

Could anyone help me with my software RAID 5 problems on Linux SMP?

Hardware facts:
===============
Dual Pentium II MMX 350, ASUS P2???, 512MB RAM, on board AIC 7890/1 with
IBM DDRS-34560W (4GB).
RAID: 2 AHA 2940W hostadapters, 5 IBM DDRS-39130W disks (2+3), 32GB
netto.
Linux kernel 2.0.36 (tried also 2.2.5), SuSE 6.0 distribution.

Problems:
=========
I installed the SW-RAID following the hints in the "Software-RAID"
HowTo. Initially the RAID worked fine and without errors. After having
filled the RAID up to halve of it's capacity, errors began to occur:

*) a batch started shell script could not read a file/directory it just
created. "No such file/directory". Running the same script from a shell
prompt worked.

*) created a tar-gzip file with tar czf. Verfying the generated tgz file
with "tar tzf xxx.tgz >/dev/null" sometimes was OK sometimes had CRC
failure or other tar specific errors. I mean, with the same file!

Questions:
==========
Are there known problems with SW-RAID 5 and Linux?
Are there known problems with the combination of HW and Linux SMP?
What else could be wrong with my installation?

Thank you everybody for trying to help.

Hi,
I have a Diamond Stealth II S220 video card.
At present time I just can use it in XFree86 environment with a 640x480
resolution (I get errors from XFree86 with greater resolutions).
I think the problem was in no-specific driver in the kernel. Do you
have any info about Stealth II drivers for Linux?
Thanks a lot.

Subject: GOT HPT366 WORKING IN LINUX!
Date: Mon, 23 Aug 1999 11:45:34 GMT

Okay I FINALLY got this to work! The problem I was having before was
no matter what kernel and patches I tried, they all did the same
thing. The HPT366 would be detected, it would see the drives attached
to it, but after that where it displays the CHS values for all the
drives, it would hang and never show hde-g. I finally disocovered it
was a problem with being able to read the CHS values of the drives!
specifying the CHS values of the drives in lilo.conf was all that was
needed!! I also had to specify "bios=0x80" for lilo to work correctly
in a mixed ide/scsi environment where I am booting from scsi.

So now I can finally mount all my drives. Now if I can just find a
kernel that the patches work with that also has working raid. 2.2.11
mkraid wouldnt work at all. 2.2.12 raid works but once you reboot it
unconfigures itself :( I guess I will try 2.3.14 next.

Basically, you just say "Y" to "MIDI" and "MPU-401", set the MPU I/O

SB16's MPU-401 emulation by setting its I/O addess to 0 and IRQ to -1.

the modem will work. you just need to find the irq number and ioport
base you've set the modem to. you need these numbers for linux to
know how to find your modem. com1 and com2 are ms-dos names for a
pair of irq and ioport which are in stardard locations. com3 is
a magic filename handle for ms-dos. as far as relating to irq and
ioport, it is near meaningless --- especially under linux.

Hi,
first, i would say that the midi support in not yet included in the
emu10k1-0.3b drivers: wait for Creative's developpers.
Second, you can easily "force" the emu10k1-0.3 to be load with others
kernel. If you use 2.2.11 kernel you try the "2.2.10" emu10k1-0.3
driver.

To use it, you do:

--> go into the file "install_emu10k1" (or something like that !!!)
--> find the line "v3=2.2.10" and replace by "v3=2.2.11"
--> rename the corresponding file "<file>.2.2.10" into "<file>.2.2.11"
(when you untar the drivers you have, in the directory, three binaries.
The binaries' name contains the name of the corresponding kernel)
--> install the driver doing automatic install
--> before reboot go to /etc/conf.modules and had the forcing line
before the drivers himself. The line is writen in the readme file of the
driver. I think it's:
"option -f ..."
but i'm not sure.
--> Reboot and enjoy !!!!

I hope this will help you :)

Rob is right, Ethernet will me alot faster. Also, go with a 10/100 hub, they
cost a few dollars more than a straight 100 but it will be worth it. And
no, there are not any 10/100 ISA cards..... ISA is just not fast enough.

You should have bought a Lin Modem, they just fork with Linux/Unix and will
not work under Windows or Dos. They are made by Lu, 3Com(USR) and Bay
Networks. They cost about 12 dollars a piece.

By the way....... I was kidding....

But not to the modem, especially if it has jumpers ( and also the MB if
it has onboard serial ports ). In the DOS world com1 and com3 share the
interrupt. don't use com3 if you have a mouse or something on com1. The
modem should be fine as long as it is not a winmodem and being non
plug-n-pray is a plus.
