Hmm, just checked it, there is now a linux page, doesn't say
much, just some links and a Mailing List signup. It says
they setup a newsgroup, but I didn't see it, might be going

No. I think there are people toying with supporting Intel's extended
36-bit addressing on PPro/Xeon but as far as I know there's no working
code yet.
The default kernel supports 3GB of user address space and 960MB of
physical RAM. To change this (in Linux 2.2.x) read the comments in
/usr/src/linux/include/asm/page.h

Since memory is split between kernel and user spaces, it depends how much
physical RAM you want to support. Set it to do 2GB physical RAM and you
have only 2GB of user address space.
There was a patch on the linux-kernel mailing list this week that
increases the physical memory support to almost 4GB but made the user
address space really small (like 150MB or so). I don't know if it was
tested in that configuration either. It might be okay for webservers but
not for your needs.
You really should take a close look at 64-bit machines (Alpha,
Ultrasparc). Of those, Alpha is more mature (last I looked, Ultrapenguin
had a 32-bit userland, though that might have changed). I don't know what
your other requirements are, though.
> 5. Does Linux support big (50-200 GB, say) RAID-5 disk subsystems on
> such a box?
I believe so. Do you need files bigger than 2GB? The maximum file size is
currently limited to 2GB on x86 (although there's a patch to "fake" large
files using large file arrays, probably somewhere at www.linuxhq.com). I'd
check with the Alpha and Ultrasparc Linux people to see if they support
files greater than 2GB (I think Alpha does, but I can't say for certain).

I'm sure they could if they wanted. But the entire "raison

investing in anything but the most popular platform?

Variance isnt prohibited, it just has to be properly documented and
supported. A pain in the butt to be sure, but it does make life easier a few

Is there someone who had installed a Specialix SX

How goes the driver from Specialix ftp site ? Is it bad, good or execellent ?
Can someone tell their experiences with this serial I/O board.

Subject: LILO and large hard disk
Date: Sat, 24 Apr 1999 07:23:45 GMT
Hi,
I have a Fujitsu 8.4Gb hard disk on my system with an Asus TX97-E
motherboard. For some reason the BIOS does not recognize the full size of
the hard disk if I use LBA. The only option that works is NORMAL. With this,
however, the number of cylinders is 16,383. When I run Linux' fdisk it warns
me that the number of cylinders exceeds 1024. This is what the partition
table looks like:
Device Boot Begin Start End Blocks Id
System
/dev/hda1 1 1 1020 514048+ 6
DOS 16-bit > =32M
/dev/hda2 * 1021 1021 15359 7614432 83
Linux native
/dev/hda3 15360 16129 16383 128520 82
Linux swap
My problem is that Linux does not boot from the hard disk (it boots fine
from the floppy made during installation). I've installed LILO in theboot
record of the root file system. I've used the "append = hd=16383,16,63" in
the /etc/lilo.conf file. When I run lilo at the prompt I get the following
message:
geo_comp_addr: Cylinder number is too big (3119 > 1023).
^
(Where does this come from?)
I ran lilo -l and it told me that it added both the Linux and the DOS
partitions. However I still can't boot from the hard disk (system just hangs
with no messages, I do not even get L.). In the DOS partition I have WinNT
and it sees the entire disk. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Best regards,
Paul Pop

Consider an extra hard drive or two. Fast, cheap, reliable. Plus you
can get one of those removable enclosures, or leave it on the machine
and spin it down with hdparm when it's not in use.

Highly doubtful. cat /proc/interrupts and /proc/ioports. You could
swap the drives to verify this for sure.

That should not be a problem. Assuming you're not running out of IRQs,
it's best to run two IDE drives this way to avoid bus contention.

Could be. Run the Seagate in PIO mode and see if that helps. You can
either recompile the kernel with "use DMA mode by default" turned off,
or maybe twiddle something under /proc/ide

Always a possibility, but you would expect this to show up regardless
of which HD you're using.

Assuming your modem isn't a winmodem then try doing a man isapnp.conf and
man setserial for some help on setting up PNP modems. As far as accessing
your win98 Fat volume you need to make sure you compiled support in your
kernel to access vfat volumes. If you already did that then you can mount
your 98 partition while in linux. Something along the lines of mount -t vfat
/dev/hda1 /mnt/c This assumes your 98 partition is on hda1 and you have a
directory under mount named c. I download linux apps all the time within
win98 and then copy them over to linux when I decide to boot into it.

Subject: A letter to APUS-developers

Hi there,
I'm not a developer, I'm only someone who is interested about Linux and
who needs it for daily work, because there are some programs which are
not available for AmigaOS. I always update my system to the newest
kernel until today. I just wanted to print something and it wasn't
possible. then I've checked out .config of the newest kernel, there was
no support for printer! So of course I had to download an older kernel
just for printing.
I understand the developers opinion that if something is reported to
work, then it can be kicked out of the kernel. I understand that a
kernel must be quite small for developing and testing. But now here is
an opinion of a "normal user". Isn't it possible to kompile let me say
one time per month a fat kernel with all drivers like for printing, for
gfx cards, for audio, network cards, SCSI cards etc for users who want
to work with their system. Fat kernel needs more memory and it takes
more speed of the CPU but we really need it. In APUS-guide is said that
kompiling isn't as easy as on Intel-systems I tried it out and it
doesn't work, so I can't simply choose the drivers I need for my system.
Therefore it is just necessary to have a kernel which includes all
drivers.
I hope there are developers who understand the problem and who can solve
it.
I'll post this message to several newsgroups in hope that a lot of
people can read it and discuss that suggestion.
Tnx for reading from Anton Klotz
