lm-sensors there, too. You may also need the kernel modules.

Unless you explicitly told it to be disabled, there should be a message
somewhere (before that) that gives the reason. That alone is useless.

BTW is that root or a normal user?

Just as you might expect, my manual kvm switch locks up whatever pc is not
currently selected.

Anyone know offhand what signal or current is required on what pin to
prevent this?

Otherwise, anyone know of a reference that I might dig this info from?

I'm trying to configure a Tekram DC-390U SCSI Card in Mandrake 7.1
without luck.

According to Tekram this card should work with the ncr53c8xx option.

When I do a '/sbin/modprobe ncr53c8xx', I get this result:

Note: /etc/modules.conf is more recent than
/lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdk/modules.dep
/lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdk/scsi/ncr53c8xx.o: init_module: Unit or
resource busy (I translated this line from norwegian)
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters,
including invalid IO or IRQ parameters
/lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdk/scsi/ncr53c8xx.o: insmod
/lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdk/scsi/ncr53c8xx.o failed
/lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdk/scsi/ncr53c8xx.o: insmod ncr53c8xx failed

What can I do to get this thing working?

Subject: Advice on Gateway Performance (1000/1400)

I am considering purchasing either a Gateway 2000 Performance 1000 (GPS-1000)
or a Performance 1400 (GPS-1400). Their system specifications are roughly
the same, using GeForce2 MX for video, 60 GB EIDE hard drives, 16x DVD
drives, and so forth. I am replacing the modem/ethernet card with the
offered alternative ethernet card from 3Com and purchasing an external
modem. The two models differ in that the GPS-1000 has a PIII 1GHz CPU,
whereas the GPS-1400 uses a P4 1.4GHz. That being said, has anyone had
any experience with installing Linux on these computers, positive OR
negative? I am particularly concerned with the DVD-ROM (especially its
capability to act as a CD-ROM drive), the Ethernet card (the Gateway site
only says that it is an Ethernet card with a few references to
compatibilty with various NetWare versions, Windows and DOS; it does not
mention the chip or model), and the EIDE adapter (I have heard some Gateway
models come with a Promise adapter that causes most Linux kernels to
choke; although the specifications say that the EIDE adapter is on the
motherboard, I am still concerned). Any advice or help you can provide
would be greatly appreciated.

As a side note, does anyone know where I can get the Debian testing release
codenamed "Woody" on CD-ROM? I would like to have access to XFree86 4.0.2
without downloading 20+ megs if possible so that I can use the GeForce2's
3D functions.

Thank you very much for your time, and any help you can provide.

Subject: Re: HELP: Linux instal won't recognize adaptec SCSI card

I finally figured this out. It turns out that the IRQ jumper settings
on the card were mislabeled (i.e. the actual PCB silk screen is
wrong)!!! Apparently Adaptec shipped a bunch before catching the
error. Later boards, I am told, have a sticker with the correct
settings. The correct settings can be seen in the following:

ftp://ftp.adaptec.digisle.net/manuals/installation_guides/ava1505_ig.pdf
http://www.actel.com/apps/guru/sep97/rp243.html

Also, I read that the Windows and DOS drivers don't use the IRQ at all
so although it was always set differently than I thought, it didn't
matter in that environment. This certainly compounded the confusion.

In searching Dejanews, I see that the 152x series is notorious for
problems. I wonder how many are due to this IRQ confusion (which I
didn't find referenced in any Dejanews reply on the topic).

I've had similiar problem with a Panasonic KX-P4410 using the ljet2p
driver with both RedHat 6.2 and 7.0. This printer is shared with 2
Windows machines as a Samba printer and those machines print on it with
no problem. Only print job generated on the Linux box are shifted.
Does anyone know what causes this?

I agree, that's most probably the explanation. It looks as if the OS and
/ or the BIOS configure the card and then write this information back
into the card's configuration area.

> Did you know that you can share IRQs between PCI devices? Both under Linux

Yes. But I have learnt that full PCI IRQ sharing under Windows requires
at least OSR2, and this old P90 is running OSR1. (For reference: you
need to enable "IRQ steering" in the PCI bus properties.) And even then,
the BIOS has to support it.

I really do need to find a way to put the new PCI card on either IRQ 3
or IRQ 4.

there any information, such as configuration or whatever, in the old

this has nothing ot do with linux. If things are fine why fix what

Btw, there are 250 and 300 watt PS available, and higher if u look hard

Add up the power consumption of each device and if its below 230, guess

I used to use strictly WD, but will not use them any more because of
reliability issues. In fact, my distributor stopped carrying them when the
return rate was over 50% during the one-year warranty, and I've been buying
Fujitsu drives since. They're as fast as the WD's, a lot cheaper, and out
of 20+ drives, I haven't had a single one go bad.

(Incidentally, Samsung drives were pretty bad for me as far as
reliability. Out of three of them, two had to go back to be replaced during
the factory warranty period.)

I haven't used Maxtors in years, but back in the day when I did, they
were the slowest drives you could buy, the bottom of the heap. The WD's
that I used could *write* as fast as the Maxtors would *read*. Perhaps
others can say if they've changed their ways lately.

Note. Read the hdparm man page -X description first! Incorrect values
can lock the system hard.

(hdparm v3.9)
...
-X Set the IDE transfer mode for newer (E)IDE/ATA2
drives. This is typically used in combination with
-d1 when enabling DMA to/from a drive on a sup
ported interface chipset (such as the Intel 430FX
Triton), where -X34 is used to select multiword DMA
mode2 transfers. With systems which support Ultra
DMA burst timings, -X66 is used to select UltraDMA
mode2 transfers (you'll need to prepare the chipset
for UltraDMA beforehand). Apart from that, use of
this flag is seldom necessary since most/all modern
IDE drives default to their fastest PIO transfer
mode at power-on. Fiddling with this can be both
needless and risky. On drives which support alter
nate transfer modes, -X can be used to switch the
mode of the drive only. Prior to changing the
transfer mode, the IDE interface should be jumpered
or programmed (see -p flag) for the new mode set
ting to prevent loss and/or corruption of data.
Use this with extreme caution! For the PIO (Pro
grammed Input/Output) transfer modes used by Linux,
this value is simply the desired PIO mode number
              plus 8. Thus, a value of 09 sets PIO mode1, 10
enables PIO mode2, and 11 selects PIO mode3. Set
ting 00 restores the drive's "default" PIO mode,
and 01 disables IORDY. For multiword DMA, the
value used is the desired DMA mode number plus 32.
for UltraDMA, the value is the desired UltraDMA
              mode number plus 64.
