With RH5.2, I could manually select what video card I had. With RH6.0, it
auto-detects the video card, and will not allow me to manually select it.
Now, with 6.0, the install prog can't detect the clockchip type (and I don't
know what it is) so consequently, the install program locks up when
attempting to test the video setup. Is there a way I can manually specify
the video card? Or could someone please tell me what (or where to find) the
clockchip type for my video card? This seems kinda wierd because everything
worked fine with 5.2. I am a serious newbie, so go easy on me. Thanks in
advance for your help.

I heard about problems on using X on a trident cyber 9385 video card. It
can damage the TFT-display. Well, I've bought a Notebook (Maxdata Artist
York) with a trident cyber 9388 video card. unfortunately only drivers
for Win98 are available.
The linux hardware compatibility-list says I can use XF86_SVGA (suse,
redhat), but it doesn't work. Can it destroy my display? How can I get
XFree to run on my notebook? (Are there any FAQ's available?)

Aha... The real problem with case ambiguity - the surprise factor.
How to become the administrator on an NT box:

They call it a problem of case sensitivity in the object manager, but
in fact it is the expectation of insensitivity that is at fault.

Well, it's in the source, but you can't configure it without editing
config/i386/config.in, and the head of the drivers/usb/Config.in file says it
is extremely experimental. So, if a kernel rev or two it might be usable by
people other than the code hackers and experimenters.

I'm trying to write simple recording application, and ran some big problems.
Summary of problems.......
1. OSS only lets me record 8bit. I'm 100% sure my card samples 16-bit.
2. The recorded sound is played too high speed. I tried 44khz, 22, and 11.
3. Trying to record from /dev/dsp gives IRQ/DRQ timeout errors, but
/dev/dsp1 works.
okay, so what's wrong? my gus settings are port 0x220/0x32c, irq 5/7,
dma 1/1 ... these settings have worked with DOS.

for RedHat, its in /etc/X11/xinitrc or /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
towards the end of the file, replace the line which opens your present
window manager ("fvwm" or something) with "exec gnome-session".
By the way, I have found gnome to be quite buggy, you might want to use KDE
until a more stable version comes out.

Subject: ppp problems partially resolved with zoom 2919L modem
Date: Fri, 30 Apr 1999 16:24:52 -0400
i posted earlier about having a problem downloading the sr1off97.exe file
(microsoft office 97 service release 1) under redhat linux 5.2 using ppp and a
zoom 2919L modem. that problem has been partially (mostly) resolved.
here are some fragments of wisdom or information encountered while i was
debugging this situation.
+ i'm using a hideous init string for this modem (zoom 2919L) of:
AT&FE0&C1&D2&K3V1S0=0\\V1S7=60S30=0L0\\N3%C1B0B15N1X4
it's ugly, but it seems to work. this is pretty close to what win95 sends the
modem, according to one respondent. the double back slashes are for the benefit
of the script file; use single back slashes when testing with minicom.
+ zoom 2919L may have flaky behavior with linux in general (because they don't
test under a freely available operating system). if you have a zoom modem and
use linux, please send the folks at www.zoomtel.com a message stating that you'd
really appreciate if they wouldn't claim their modems work under linux when they
don't actually test them under linux. or stating that you'd really like it if
they'd set up a linux box and test their modems on it...
+ there may be some strange MTU factors due to IP masquerade. this is
supposedly because the transmission MTU has to be the same for all the routes,
and the ethernet MTU is 1500. i am now using the default of 1500 and things are
doing well; with smaller MTU's, i start being unable to see certain sites (like
www.tvguide.com's tv listings).
+ the latest modem firmware upgrade for the 2919L allowed me to download the
sr1off97.exe file finally. this file is available at:
http://premium.officeupdate.microsoft.com/officeupdate/DistribDownload/sr1off97ddl.htm
this file was the initial reason for my posting; i needed to download it and
couldn't get the download to even start. bigger files worked, smaller files
worked, but this file didn't.
after it started working, two of the times i tried, the download was really
slow all through the first 3-4 K of the file. after that part, the speed picked
up to normal download rates. but another time, the file was speedily downloaded
even in that first portion. this might be due to varying quality connections to
my ISP.
so, it really seems like some weird behavior inside my modem has been fixed,
but what still puzzles me is why win95 was able to download the file with no
problem, even with the older firmware. perhaps there are enough differences in
how the modem is used under linux and 95 for those differences to matter.
thanks to the people who contributed suggestions about this.

Hi,
I just had a weird experience when playing around with my PC...
I had a program crash (Lyx1.0) when importing a Tex file and failing
miserably.
It filled my /home ext2 partition on an IDE drive by filling the log file
~/.xsession-errors(120M). When I noticed this (my bash prompt shows free space
in /home) I removed the offending file and killed the hung Lyx process.
To my surprise the free disk space did not show up! I ran sync, du, df and
stuff like that. I thought I had overlooked a big file somewhere in my $HOME.
Nothing. I killed a few files and regained a couple of free MBs, but nowhere
near what I had before.
So finally I tried to unmount the partition and it claimed device busy. I did
fuser -va /deb/hda2 and it showed a mount process owned by root with PID root.
strange. I changed to single user mode (init S). I tried again. I could now
