I'm running Slackware Linux and I can't get it to work with my PS/2
mouse. It will work with a serial mouse, but unfortunately the serial
mouse is on loan and has to go back. If anybody can help me, let me know
cuz I really need to get that mouse working!
Thanx.

Curtis,
SuSE have released a server for most of the SiS chipsets.
www.suse/de/e/ and look for the servers section. I downloaded and got
the SiS 6326 working fine.

I realize this. The only thing that I am saying if that if there is a
problem,
couldn't they just verify that, and tell us that it would be taken care
of?
Maybe I am being a little hard on them, I haven't had any real problems
since before
4.1 with installs. I guess I am spoiled ;)
The other thing is this.. I posted about this problem on the hedwig-list
from RedHat..
other people who posted problems (specifically with DHCP) received
answers from RedHat,
and verification that the problem would be fixed when the OS was
released.
I do run my business on RedHat as well... and I have been very happy
with their
product. I haven't even thought of changing distros in a long, long
time. RedHat
is lightning fast with security fixes (for the most part) as well as bug
fixes. My
servers are all solid... I just see all these people with the same
problem wondering
"What are we going to do?", and I think some kind of official response
would be cool.

What version of linux are you running? Are you sure you've setup your card
properly? Do a "cat /dev/sndstat" and check the output to make sure all
the settings are correct.

After I "successfully" configured a sound card, my modem is not
working in Linux anymore (though everything is fine in Win95).
for example this command that supposed to produce a dial tone:
echo "ATDT\n" >/dev/modem
doesn't produce it.
connecting to ISP doesn't work: for example this how it complains in
/var/log/message:
pppd[338]: pppd 2.3.3 started by denis, uid 501
pppd[338]: tcgettattr :Input/Output error (5)
I did check that modem is at the right port (COM2 in win95 =
/dev/modem ->/dev/cua1 in Linux, IRQ=3 soundcard IQ=5)
PLEASE, HELP! I RAN OUT OF WHAT IT COULD BE!

Reply to: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
I've just spent a very frustrating afternoon trying to print a couple of
pages of my bank statement, saved by netraped v4.51, in a .ps format.
Calling up printtool, I made sure it all worked, at least when my Stylus
Pro is set for Courior font, and that the gs option was set for
@stc_h.upp.
Attempted printing of a test postscript page from printtool gets me an
error because I'm set for a text only printer. Refuses to print.
Selecting one of the 'other' filters only gets me a rangecheck error
message printed on the printer. There are no 'Epson' choices in the
printtool filters menu.
So I went over to RedHat and picked up the newest printtool, and
rhs-printfilters, but they won't install either, the rhs-printfilters
claims it needs libc.so.6 or better, and thats there as a link to
libc_2.0.7.so.
So howintuncket do it get some Epson filters for printtool? Are the
Epsonfolks on a rampage about linux or something.
Then, figuring that GS should be able to do it, I printed the tiger.ps
thing the other day. But that suddenly can't be told where the printer
is, generating if it does anything, a file containing the screen output
gs kicks out.
Anybody know the syntax for doing that?
Cheers, Gene

i think you should install kernel 2.2.x. the 2.0.x dont work with
pcmcia on my notebook.
at first you have to install the pcmcia-drivers.
then you activate the network-options in kernel-config.
my kernel loads it as modules and it works.

Hello,
I am having real troubles setting up my Laserjet 4L under kernel 2.2.6
and I was hoping you could help me.
I recompiled the kernel with support for parallel ports and printers.
Everything looks fine during the boot process:
I see the following lines in dmesg:
parport0: PC-style at 0x378 [SPP,PS2]
parport0: no IEEE-1284 device present.
[... (I have printer support as a module, so the rest is all the way at
the bottom:)]
lp0: using parport0 (polling).
Looks like it should work, does it not? But if I try something like
'echo test>/dev/lp0',
the data LED on the printer goes on, while the 'Ready' LED blinks once
and reamins on after that, also. Both LEDs stay on until I unplug the
printer. Needless to say that nothing is printed.
If I try to use lpr, I get the same effect. I tried lp1 and lp2, but for
both I get a message that the device doesn't exist.
Would anybody happen to have any idea what I might be doing wrong?
TIA,
Juergen

Howdy,
Treat them just like a regular modem. The only difference is the init
strings for the device. It's a bit of guesswork but it can be done. Also
have a look at XISP to help with the debugging and result codes. Most of the
time the high speed card is the problem... isn't supported ...

First off, patience, I'm setting up my first system with RH 5.2, and
I have about 2 days experience w/Linux. I'm also having a similar
problem, but I think I screwed it up even more.
I tried setting up my SB16 PnP using autoconfigure in X and it
seemed to work(demo sound cuts out after a second, dunno if that means
it worked or not. I get no error messages to tell me one way or
another).
Next I tried to set up my network card to connect to my cable modem.
I set it to eth0 and loaded in my IP information. (Actual IP address
was off by a digit but I don't think it caused this problem) Once I
had everything in, I clicked Save, then Quit. Boom. Lockup. Hard. Had
to do hard reboot. Now, I can't even boot Linux to a prompt (I don't
have it set to auto-load X or anything0. After most of the start-up
messages, I can see, "auto loading SB16 PnP failed, possible irq
conflict" or words to that effect. Then I see, "System loggers
started: syslogd" and the system seems to freeze up. Letting it sit
for 20 minutes didn't accomplish anything so I assume the system has
frozen up. Several hard reboots didn't change anything. Nor did
booting from a floppy.
So I can't even get to the shell to unscrew whatever I did. I'm
guessing there's a problem between the NIC and the SB16. Should I try
ripping out the sound card, and see if that at least gets it past the
the logger or what? Or is there something I missed at boot-up?

Subject: Kernel Module driver
Date: Mon, 10 May 1999 02:58:04 GMT
I am writing a kernel module driver that will implement bus mastering.
This requires a large contiguous buffer. To do this I load Linux with
the LILO command "linux mem=60M" so that the kernel only uses 60 of my
64MB of system RAM. I then remap the memory from 60M to 64M using
ptr=ioremap(0x03C00000, 0x400000). The resulting pointer is
ptr=0x5428000. In order to get an address that I can pass to the device
I do a ptr2=virt_to_bus(ptr). When I do this I get ptr2 the same as
ptr1. This is not a valid bus pointer since I only have 64MB physical
RAM. Thus, my bus mastering is not working. What could I be doing
wrong? (I am running this on a PII 400 with 64MB ram and kernel
2.0.35. ioremap is defined to vremap as required).
Thanks,
David

I have that in my .xinitrc in the root directory and when
