I appreciate your great resource, I used it to determine that another
V.90 modem given to me was indeed a useless piece of junk (errr... I
mean a windmodem).

I am about as positive as I can be that this was a PCI modem. Or at
least I was until I went to www.modemblaster.com and looked it up, where
it indeed says ISA. When I get home this evening, I will look and make
sure, and I will post the full information.

Sorry to cause any confusion... I could _swear_ that is a PCI modem...

I could be wrong, but I think you need to remove termination from the SCSI
controller since you should only have termination at each END of your SCSI
bus. In your case, it looks like your SCSI bus starts internally with your
NEC and ends externally with your scanner. Any termination between those
devices will mess things up.

(1) put windows on the first primary partition.

With LBA, the 1024 cyl limit occurs at 8.4g

Which means that the dealer's making quite a handsome profit. If you feel
insulted by this message, then I am sorry, but for what you're paying for
that system, you ought to be getting a 17" monitor thrown in with it.
Remember that all of the prices I've quoted above are in Canadian dollars
-- multiply by 0.69 to get the US dollar equivilant.

Also, RAM is more expensive in the United States than it is in Canada (due
to the import tax structure in your country..). However, the difference
itself is not that substantial, and the other components are less
expensive in the U.S. than they are here in Canada.. And there are better
deals to be found -- even in Canada.. If you don't think you're
comfortable building your own system -- let me assure you that it's a
relatively simple thing to do, and you'll want to probably do it yourself
anyways so that you'll know exactly how to configure your kernel once you
rebuild it for the first time..

I hate to ask this question to this group, but there are so many people
here that know their stuff. So here goes...

I just got my new SCSI card, Adaptec 2940U2W. Everything works ok
except for my scanner. My scanner is a Umax 1220s. Here is my setup:

ID0: NEC Cd-Rom (terminated)
ID1: Panasonic CD-R CW-7502
ID3: Umax 1220S (terminated)
ID5: Iomega Zip 100
ID7: Adaptec 2940U2W

If I plug my scanner in, nothing is detected. Without it connected,
everything else is detected. I'm connecting my scanner with a 25 to 50
pin cable. I have an adapter to give me an external 50-pin connector.
Everything is on the 50-pin connector. I'm thinking I have some a
termination problem, but my settings haven't changed between my old card
(Intraserver 3140U). All help is appreciated.

Subject: SOUND: config trouble

Fellow Linux-fans,

I've run out of ideas while getting sound to work on my Linux box:

I'm running kernel 2.2.6 on an IBM PC 730 model 6876 (Pentium 75 with
48 Mb memory) with sound card on the motherboard.

When this system was still running Windoze 95, the sound system was set
up as a Microsoft Sound System compatible, with I/O address of 0x530,
IRQ of 10 and DMA of 0 and 1. Hardware's still set up that way as far
as I can tell by cheking the BIOS (using the so-called reference
diskette). "dmesg" indicates "correct" initialisation" of the sound
system and even /dev/sndstat doesn't rveal any obvious errors.
I get best results when the kernel includes support for the
Microsoft Sound System with the above parameters: I can play one WAV
file, after which /var/log/messages says:

Uhhuh. NMI received. Dazed and confused, but trying to continue
You probably have a hardware problem with your RAM chips or a
power saving mode enabled.
Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error?

Shame it's not trying to continue as it says, the sample sounds just
fine to me! In any case, after this the IRQ/DRQ message is just
repeated and no sound (apart from a clicking noise) can be heard.

Any help or ideas are VERY welcome indeed! Thanx!

Mich.

Check at www.amquestmodem.com the excact type of your modem, if your
modem is a hardware modem, it is supported in Linux. If it is a
softmodem(WinModem, HCFModem ....) better buy a hardware modem.

You might try downloading the latest Xserver for the S3-Virge first...
Otherwise, it will depend somewhat on the resolution/color-depth you
want to use... I don't yet have an AGP motherboard yet, so can't help.
Maybe a Cirrus Logic, if you want something for cheap that's supported.

To boot with the SCSI drive, be sure to use the "linear" option when
the install gets up to setting up LILO. Should cure your boot problem.

Probably can do it without a raid controller.

Subject: Modem woes
Date: 12 May 1999 18:50:31 GMT

I tried to send this out last night, but I think something happened too it.. if
it is a duplicate, I appologize..

I have a brand new pci zoom 56k fax/voice that works in w%!doze but not in
Linux... ( not pnp )
 heres the specs:
p-90 w/40M ram SB16 Diamond Stealth s-3 w/1Meg.

Slackware 3.6 ( kernel 2.0.35 ) < although i have Info Magics Developers
resource for redhat/caldera/suse/debian installs..

Dmesage says: Serial Driver 4.13 w/no options enabled
/dev/tty00 @ 03f8 irq 4 is a 16550a
/dev/tty01 @ 02f8 irq 3 is a 16550a

if I type
#> echo "atdt /n" /dev/ (modem, tty02, ttyS2, cua2, etc )
I get nothing.

I only have seyon ( that I know of from slackware ) and cant get even a click
out of the damned thing. The modem is setup for com3, and I don't have any
conflicts or resulting error messages poping up on me.. It's like the damned
thing is dead..
any suggestions out there?

you can e-mail me at [EMAIL PROTECTED], or leave a post here so others may
benifit...
Thanx!

Red Hat 6.0 replaced the old "dhcpcd" command with the new "pump"
command, which doesn't work with @Home (possibly other cable modem
services). It doesn't have the DHCP client identifier option.

dhcpcd is in the RPMS directory in the RH6 CD. Just install that as per

Depends on the kernel version the install uses, 2.0.x kernels are
Uni-processor, just edit the ".config" file after you run "make config"
or "make menu_config" or "make xconfig" and uncomment the SMP line.
2.2.x kernels support SMP on the install. SMP support should be better
with the 2.2.x kernels, if your install doesn't come with it, check out
upgrading your distribution.
