Yep, it is possible. I have a Dell XPSR450, but only with a STB
Velocity 128 (nVidia Riva128zx with 8MB, I bought mine a couple months
before they offered the TNT) and a 19" Dell Monitor. My Linux system is
running fine, but I had to go through a couple of installations to get
it right - the problem is setting up the video card. RH5.2 comes with
XFree86 3.3.2, and this will not work with the TNT (or the Riva128zx).
You should get at least XFree86 3.3.3-1 (from the updates.redhat.com ftp
site), but I recommend getting XFree86 3.3.3.1-1 (from
developer.redhat.com) along with the Freetype RPM at the same site.
Proceed with the RH5.2 install but don't try to setup Xwindows yet. Get
the XF86 3.3.3.1-1 (or 3.3.3-1, note that these are different!) files
(either download them to a Windows partition and mount it (search this
newsgroup for how to do that, I have posted instructions a couple times
in the last week) or you could put them on a zip disk and mount that in
Linux. You'll need to get the following RPMS under 3.3.3.1:
XFree86-rhcn-*.rpm where * are:
                3.3.3.1-1 (the Xserver itself)
                100dpi*
                75pdi* (the fonts)
VGA16* (the server needed by XF86Setup)
                 XF86Setup (the setup program)
SVGA* (the server for your TNT)
                server-common* (other important stuff)
                lib* (the libraries)
and you'll need the freetype RPM.
Then rpm -Uvh *.rpm, hopefully it will install. Make sure you don't have
xfstt installed, this will cause problems (true type support is already
built in to 3.3.3.1-1). Installing 3.3.3.1-1 wasn't so straight-forward
for me, I had to uninstall a few things to get them out of the way (the
old XF86 files), and then install 3.3.3.1-1 (and install the lib rpm
twice) to get it to work.

Then run XF86Setup to setup your card. Have fun!

Basically what happens is the manufacturers realize that they can leave chips
off of the modem by having software emulate their functions. Not only does
this create the problems that the other posters have said, but it also means
that the slower a processor you have, the more variable (slow) the modem will
perform. There are companies that make "internal controller" modems (read
good-ol-fashion-all-the-parts-there), but you can expect to pay a little
more. Check out www.56k.com, they make a pretty good case for IC modems.

It might be an APM bug. You might want to upgrade to kernel 2.0.36.

Just upgrade to a kernel that recognizes it, and you won't have problems,
I believe. I have this nic, and I haven't found a way to get it running
with 2.0.29, yet. When I run my system under test conditions (linux on a
floppy) using a 2.0.36 kernel, the card is recognized and I have
networking running in no time.

Of course, YMMV.

I have a 300a at 450mhz... windows ran at 2.0v fine... but linux required
that I up it to 2.1v because it would randomly reboot during intensive stuff
like compiling. Try higher voltage if you can. Also if you have an Abit
BH6 or something similar and only have one dimm. Move it from the first
slot(on the left) to the third one. Seems to make things much stabler.

Okay, after earlier attempts to triple boot I've decided just to do a dual
boot do to NT compatibility problems with my system and the fact that I have
a second computer I can put NT on. What I want to know is how I should
partition and setup my 13GB drive to handle a 98/Linux dual-boot. Every time
I go to setup Linux after setting up 98 Linux sees the whole extended
partition (11GB) and I only want to give it about 5. So should I partition
the whole drive before hand? Will Linux be able to drop the OS onto one of
the logical drives? And in this kind of situation do I still install 98
first?

Thanks,

Thanks to everyone who helped me with the Orchid problem. Got X windows up
and running last p.m. The problems were;

Base address of card had been changed from factory default when
debugging a video encoder in another system. Xconfigurator set it up as
0xE0000000, but it wouldn't work that way. Had to set it back to the
hardware default of 0xC0000000. Also, I had not created the symbolic links
correctly. After that, it worked, but I couldn't get any of the higher
resolution modes. Curing this amounted to carefully reading the XF86Config
file and commenting out things that were unusable or beyond my monitor's
range, then commenting out all the screens except for the "accel".
After getting X windows up I received a pleasant suprise in discovering
that Red Hat 5.1 had also installed TCL/TK. I had bought a book some time
ago and quickly entered a short command for the fun of it, not expecting
anything to happen. I was delighted when I immediately got an X window
windows and button on screen. Cool!
Now, on to the nightmare of making a plug and play 3C509B ethernet card
card work. I am deciphering isapnptools as I write this.
Once again, thanks to everyone who gave advise on bringing up Linux.
It's great to have a supportive community of developers out there...and I
haven't turned on my microsoft windows machine in over a week, now...

Multiwave: Comwave 56 PCI

DSP (as opposed to HSP)

If I've managed to decipher this correctly it _does_ do it's DSP on-board
and is
not a standard winmodem CPU vampire.

How do you write a modem driver anyway.....

If the IRQ 12 you mentioned is the one you found in win95, then you
should confirm the irq set in linux. Chane this one to 12 as well and
probably it will work (at least in my case)

Change it with the setserial command.

The bogomips number pretty much *exactly* tracks
MHz for all the P6-class CPUs I have tested (including
PPro, PII (Klammath), and Celeron (Deschutes and
Mendocino).

So, the answer is "450 BogoMIPS."

Note that AMD CPUs give higher-than-MHz BogoMIPS
numbers, but generally run other code slower.
This has to do, I claim, with the fact that the
K6 microarchitecture runs a two-instruction decrement/
branch loop faster than the P6 microarchitecture.

I think you must install windows first because it overwrites the MBR
with out asking. Then Redhat or SUSE will recognize your free space,
format it for you and install for you. Ive had two very easy installs
with both on my machine running winblows 95/98. LILO then installs on
the MBR and you have a very functional dual boot machine

I am about to install linux (SuSE 6.0) on my notebook compaq contura 400.

Now, it seams there is a problem with the ramdisk drive at the
beginning of the installation. the ramdrive size is defined
as 10240 kBytes. my machine has about 20 MB, so the size should
be no problem. but it seams that the system generate a lot of
smaller ramdisk drive (16) with total size of 10240 kBytes.

Now while unpacking the Initdisk.gz the machine comes to a problem.
it can't unpack the data to the ramdrive because each drive is to small
 for this gz file.

what can i do ?

powered down the machine via the power switch.

Does anyone have suggestions as to how to ensure this does not happen?
I am afraid that one of these spontaneous shutdown may fry my hard
drive.

Here are my machine details:
Model : Gateway 2000, Solo 9100
Memory : 108M
OS : Linux 2.0.30
APM : Installed.
Display: 1078x768 TFT

Any suggestions appreciated. Please reply to
"[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
or post to the newsgroup..

Thanks

I use linux with GTE ADSL service (here in NC) and have no problems.
The things to be careful of (in no particular order):

+ Be sure to use the proper cable between the ADSL modem and the
NIC on the Linux box. Generally for a 1-to-1 link you'll need
a "crossover" cable, since the ADSL box and the NIC will think
they are talking to a normal "hub" device.

+ Be sure to have the "dhcpcd" package installed on Linux so that
the ADSL service can properly configure the interface at boot
time. (This presumes dynamic-ip and a DHCP server on the ADSL
     side.)

+ Use Linuxconf or netconfig (under RedHat) or similar tools to
make sure that the system knows to use DHCP for initialization.

+ Don't expect to get the "full bandwidth" your service level
provides. The bandwidth limiter used at the telco central
office eats part of the nominal service provided. (Presumes
     you're using a fractional-T1 speed -- the telco artificially
throttles packets to prevent using more than the "purchased"
     speed. But that's another story.)

+ If trying to use more than 1 computer on the line, get a good
mini-hub and make sure the ISP isn't going to limit the number
of IP numbers you can get at a time.

I've got a definite case of "strong like" for my ADSL service.
