So, all this talk about winmodems, sounds like a challenge to an experienced
linux driver programmer out there! Isn't it just a matter of figuring out
what the modem is expecting the OS to do? Is anyone working on this? I'd do
it myself if I wasn't a total newbie (< 1 month) at linux!

I know this sounds stupid, but I used to think that you can low-level
format a floppy in Linux using "fdformat". Well, on my Debian system
this is what I get:
==================================
histria ~ # fdformat
bash: fdformat: command not found
histria ~ # man fdformat
No manual entry for fdformat
===================================
(as root). How can I format a floppy ?
  Thank you,

Hi there,
I have a client who wants a mail server setup. The configuration of the
system is as follows.
P-II 350 MHZ
primary master- 4.3gb HDD
primary slave - LG-CDROM drive - CRD-8400B
64MB RAM
I have installed every available flavour of linux using the bootable
CDROM.
The installation procedure is smooth and the linux gets installed.
But, after installation when i boot to linux, it hangs after detecting
the CDROM drive
please help me out in this regard.
Thank you in advance

        Hi,
Any suggestions on CD writer? I'd like SCSI. Read speed is not an
issue. Should Write speed be one? The Pansonic is quite a bit cheaper
then the Yahama. Is it any good? Or should I just spend the extra money.

Hi,

I had Linux and Windows installed on my 3.8G IDE, and then bought a
Seagate 4.3G SCSI drive on which I thought I could install Solaris 7,
but wasn't able to. Well, the IDE drive failed (data reading error) and
I can't format it in FDISK (won't let me delete any logical or other
partitions). Supposedly this may be due to Partition-It.

So I installed Windows on the SCSI, and that's where I'm at now.
Wasting my speedy SCSI drive on Windows. So my questions are:

1 - How do I fix my IDE drive.
2 - If I can fix it, is it possible to install OS's on both the IDE and
SCSI drive. If yes, is it possible to install Windows on the IDE and
have the Linux and Solaris on the SCSI? Would some other permutation
make more sense?

Thanks,

Niels

Subject: pcmcia-3.0.10, kernel 2.2.9, MO 640 MB on Armada 7730
Date: Fri, 14 May 1999 21:13:48 +0200

For report only: On an Armada 7730 laptop now, finally, I can access a
640 MB MO-drive pretty fine (except that it is sloooow) with the Adaptec
1460 SCSI-card.

The procedure of starting pcmcia modules has crashed the machine, before
I patched the boot-up script - auto-IRQ assignment is excluded now. This
is only a problem with the i82365 module. The line for loading it has
now the parameters:

do_scan=0 irqlist=7,9,10 poll_interval=100

With kernel 2.2.9, everything looks fine for accessing the 2048
bytes/block of the 640 MB media. Maybe I find a patch in the kernel, for
to drastically increase cache memory. Under DOS cardmanager, it runs
quite fast with smartdrv having 2 MBytes.

Btw., with a Toshiba 6.4 GByte hard-drive, I can set hwparms for
speeding-up a bit with parameters: -m16 (multiple blocks per read), -c3
(32-bit access) -u1 (allow interrupts in irq-handler). Maybe newer
Armadas allow as well DMA access. This one won't.

When using Linux fdisk for preparing this drive on this machine, one
should set the geometry to 839 cylinders and 240 heads despite other
initial information from the BIOS (13424 cylinders, 15 heads) before
setting-up partitions.

You could simply tar the entire contents of the drive and pipe it back
through tar to extract it to the other drive. Then you'll need to run LILO
on the new drive to write the master boot record.

It's best to do this from a floppy booted system so that files aren't being
accessed on the drive as you tar it, but it's not strictly necessary.

We do this often. We create an "image" drive that is our base install with
all common applications then create our servers by "copying" the contents of
that partition to a newly partitioned drive.

Another alternative is a program called Ghost that is DOS based, but it'll
run off a single boot floppy that will copy a hard drive sector-by-sector.
We've used it to successfully copy a drive exactly including the master boot
record, so you don't even have to mess with LILO after you copy it.

What about the /dev directory? Won't tar try to copy all of those special
files? And if you leave that out, then how do you get the new disk to have
enough of a /dev directory in order to boot?

I've tried to clone disks using tar before, but never found a satisfactory
way to avoid this problem. Any suggestions?

It's kind of a wash.

Some (most/all?) PS/2 mice can get confused if you disconnect the mouse while
it is being used. Serial mice don't tend to. On the other hand, mfgrs are
building in fewer serial ports these days (and Linux USB support is still
fairly new), while in general any desktop computer built in the last 2-3 years
will have a PS/2 mouse port. Laptops often times have one serial port, and one
PS/2 port, so you might be out of luck if you want to plug in an external
keyboard and a PS/2 mouse. Many KVM (keybaord, video, mouse) switches like the
Cybex AutoView that I'm using right now only supports PS/2 mice plugged into
the box. If you do without a PS/2 mouse, you free up IRQ 12.

Hi All,

I just installed a scsi Panasonic/Matshita CD-R (CW-7502) and I have a pb
under linux. Cdrecord says it can't inquiry my Cd-Recorder. It can't do
a -scanbus or anything else also. My device string is dev=/dev/scd1:0,6,0
but it seems the good device would be the sgx where x is a number. On my
system (an old slack one) I only have sgy where y are letters from a to h.
It seems there is a pb with the kernel to redirect the scsi recorder to the
good devices.

Any idea ?

It works best if you back up with a rescue disk, so you're not reading
a live /dev. Also use the -p option of tar.

Hmpf. If you're in need of a 100GB file server, don't try to save
money at the wrong places. But yes, it can be done with IDE drives.

>* Possibility 1: Use three IDE hard drives and an IDE CDROM.

Possibility 3: Use 2 IDE controllers (a Promise Ultra66 should do it)
and connect 5 IDE HDs and one ATAPI CDROM drive.

If even that's not enough, use RAID or edit the ide.c source for
to have support for more than 4 IDE channels.

Well, you'll need the latest fdisk version for to have support for such

You can always use dump and restore in a pipe. I don't know if tar copies
special files but dump and restore surely do.

Yes I have a Sonic Impact 90 and it works under Linux with a sound driver
from www.opensound.com. This is a "beta" driver and it costs $30, but
works on a trial basis with some restrictions, like you have to keep
turning it off and on periodically (though playing from cd's works without
restriction). It seems to play mp3's fine, haven't tried much complicated
stuff except cd's and mp3's. You need to make sure you have no sound
compiled in your kernel or loaded as modules (search for sound.o files and
rename them) or it won't install. But the install is painless and it
autoconfigured perfectly.

Before one of my hard drives died, I had 4 hard drives hooked up (using the
Promise Ultra66 IDE add-on card) and it worked fine even with that
unsupported add-on card. I also had two cd-roms connected. No problems
there either. I had about half as much storage space as you. I don't see
any reason why it should be a problem.

WinModem junk. Throw it away and buy a nice external modem.

Depends on which resources....
If you means IRQ's then PS/2 uses less :-)

I think that you should really go for a normail 3-button mouse.
Yes, 3 buttons. I have got a 3 button PS/2 mouse and that works very well.
Also Logitech has some nice 3 button serial mice. I use such a logitech
mouse at work. Also no problem.
Avoid very cheap mice. Sometimes very difficult to find which protocol
the're speaking.

Good luck,

I have the Yamaha and it has had problems, was bad out of box, took a month to get
replaced then went bad in a month and took another month to get repaired, they do
fix it but are just way too slow. I recomend a plextor, cost more but heard they are
reliable.
