Hi. I'm a new linux user and I just installed the Voodoo Banshee drivers for
my graphics card. I think I may have made an incorrect monitor selection
though. As a result on starting X Windows (which is done automatically at
startup) my monitor blinks on and off repeatedly. I would therefore like to
halt the startup proceedure before X Windows kicks in. How does one do that?

I have this card installed in my PC. I have RH5.2 installed. When I run
sndconfig, the probe detects the sound card. Everything seems to be
fine until it tries to play a sample. I get the message:
/lib/modules/preferred/misc/sb.o:init.module:Device or resource busy
sound:Device or resource busy.

Please, what can I do?I would appreciate any help. Thanks....

Having just built this system, using a TYAN S1590S board, bios 1.14, and
buying a UDMA33 capable drive, also according to the docs, PIO modes 3
and 4 are supported.

Under RH linux 5.2, original kernel 2.0.36 it default powerups at 4.75
megs/second. Regardless of what I do in the bios, or with hdparm (many
of the operations are 'not supported'), the best I can get it to do is
about 6.75 megs/second.

The drive is a WDC AC14300R, FwRev 15.01J15

Is there any hope of ever getting this thing to move data with a bigger
spoon?

Cheers, Gene

I've got a notebook system that uses 3Com's 3C575 for a LAN connection.
This is a CardBus (i.e. busmastering PCMCIA card) device.

Is this card supported under the v2.2x kernel and latest PCMCIA package?
For example, does RedHat's v6.0 release support this card?

Thank you.

Sorry, the Aztech MDP7800-U is a Windows-only software modem; it
requires the Windows "modem emulation" software to work at all.

I am able to boot from the CDROM, and start the install process. I can
even use disk-druid to create the desired partitions (/, /boot, swap and

mount them, I get an error message "device not configured". Being a

The vast majority of PCI "modems" are in fact winmodems
and won't work under anything other than Windows. And
quite possibly not very well even then.

Hi All,

I am having problems running linux on my machine. I installed SuSE 5.2 on it fine,
inc. lilo etc. The problem is that it will not
boot. I get as far as Loading Linux....... but then it stops, dead. This itself is
not too odd and I put it down to a
misconfigured kernel or bios so I checked these and they were fine. I then booted
from a zImage floppy disk which I had made
earlier for this machine (SuSE allows a log in withought reboot after installation)
and oddly it booted from this fine. I also
tried my rescue disk because it's got a Lilo bootblock and this worked fine. There
were however some problems with the floppy disk
boot ups. Firstly it would not detect my memory above 64mb and when forced by
appending mem=160mb it totally crashed.

I put this down to the built in SiS 6326 video cards system memory usage/window and
reduced this in the bios to 8mb. I then tried
appending mem=128mb instead and it still crashed. Despite the lack of detected memory
I pushed on a played with the hard disk
settings to see if this would work i.e. turning off block mode & adjusting settings
and this also made no difference. I then
thought I would try another boxed linux and tried the installation with RH 5.2 and had
the same problems.

I then got really annoyed and tried a zDisk boot from kernel version 2.2 to see if
this solved the memory problem. This didn't
either (nor the boot from HD prob either).

Anyway, here is my config:

SuSE 5.2 (Kernel 2.0.36)
Celeron 333 (not overclocked unfortunately)
3.2 gb Samsung ultra dma II hard disk
160mb of SDRAM Mixed 66mhz & 100mhz 1x32mb (66mhz I could not overclock it despite
nail varnishing B21 so thought what the hell) +
1x128mb(100mhz)
SiS 6326 'built in' Video card with 8mb of stolen system memory
CMI8330 'built in' soundcard
PS/2 Mouse
IsaPnP generic Motorola Modem 56k

Any ideas?

Thanks

What is the problem you're having? I suspect you may have
better luck if you were to use lilo instead of loadlin. One
of my machines has both IDE and SCSI; Win95 and OS/2 are on
the IDE drive and linux is on the SCSI drive. I use OS/2's
Boot Manager to select between them and linux boots fine
from the SCSI drive in this arrangement. I suspect lilo
would perform similarly.

There is a patch for the Linux kernel which will make the internal
speaker or a covox connected to the parallel port work as a sound card.
This patch is mentioned in the Sound HowTo, and should be available with

IDE drives are known to consume CPU when they are being used. Serial
ports with uarts having rather small buffers running at high speeds are
known to really spit out interrupts.

A solution to your problem might be to use irqtune which you will find
at http://www.best.com/~cae/irqtune/
However, this might give you a new problem with broken CD-Rs if the
buffer in you writer isn't big enough.
