Must be! It's the default kernel (2.0.34) from RH 5.2.

I am using a BP6 mainboard which has build in a ATA66 controller. I have
a ATA66 drive connected to it.
When I start to install Linux (Redhat 5.2), the installation program
report that it can't reconize any harddisk, how can I solve the problem?

Thanks for help.

Hi, I currently have a windows 98 machine, and a pent 90 with DOS. I was
wondering if it was possible to install linux on the DOS computer through a
network. Does the network have to be set up first? The hub and all the other
stuff are set up, but stuff like samba are not in place since linux isnt
installed yet.

My question : How do I install linux on a pentium 90 computer which has no
modem, and no cd-rom, it only has a network card. Please help me.

Hi,

I have recently purchased some Compaq 3000 & 6500 Servers and am in the process of
putting
Debian Linux on each of them.
The base system installs fine and all seems to be working, until I try and install the
ethernet
card. The Compaq comes with a Tlan dual 10/100 ethernet adapter which is fine and and
half
recent kernel has a module for it, but my problem is that it tries to put it on IRQ 15
where the
SCSI card is already sitting.

Does anyone know why this is doing this and how to fix it?

Also is there any way to control the LCD screen on the front of the Server and/or the
server
utilities such as pre empting a hard disk failure and those kind of things.

Thanks,
Aaron

Hello, ... and, Have you used the X-server on a distribution disk? I've
heard there is a new server for that card at Creative web pages. If you
think that can be the problem you can also contact M. A. Cotes
([EMAIL PROTECTED]), because he had the same problem, and he has
solved.

Try using Minicom at the console - it's a lot easier to get
working and will hopefully allow you to determine if everything
is connected properly.

I have just installed redhat 5.2 on my second hardisk and the install
went well.
However when I tried to boot linux from boot magic it gets as far as the
lilo prompt then a succession of zero & ones appear.

As a result it will not let me boot anything at the lilo prompt.

Has anyone had this problem before?

I think that it could a hardware problem?

Hi , I'm new to this, and tying to find my way through HOWTO's, and
other help facilities. However, i did not yet find the reason why my
floppy won't mount.

Here is the scene :

IDE 1 master : HD Dos partition (win 95 boot)
IDE 1 slave : CDRom
IDE 2 master : HD Linux partition

Whenever I want to Linux, I use a LILO from a bootable floppy (I have
not yet the LILO with multiple OS on 1st HD ... problems 1 by 1 ... :-)

So I get the Mandrake (6.02, KDE) thing, and it works alright, except
that the CD Rom mounts alright, but not the floppy.
I get the error :

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/cdrom, or too
many mounted files systems

(Though I booted on a floppy !)
Any thoughts ?

TIA

Well its very simple.
First of all you should know if you have a ES1370 or ES1371 soundchip.
(written on the card)
Then go to /etc/conf.modules
change the lines
alias char-major-14 off
alias sound off
alias midi off

to

# alias char-major-14 off
# alias sound off
# alias midi off

and
# alias char-major-14 es1370
to
alias char-major-14 es1370

or the line containing es1371

if you now start a mixer programm you should see
via lsmod an output containing your soundchip and soundcore unter the
modules-tab.

Now it should be possible to hear all the good Zappa stuff on your
computer.

Best whishes

Hello

Since I've upgraded my PC to the ASUS P3B-F 100 MHZ and Debian2.1

My scsi controller is a (symbios) ncr53c810. Could it be the 100MHz

(With my CD-R I've similar Problems)

The error looks like:

Unfortunally I've no idea on scsi what does it mean (in the SCSI HOWTO

What does the st09 mean? My tape is st0.

Thanks a lot for help

IMO, dual cpu's just aren't the way to go, and most that have
'em (o/c'd anyhow) report the same performance levels as those with
just one. I believe it's a rare app that uses both cpu's effectively.

Currently the C366, or the PIII450 are the favored o/c'rs.
C300's that will do 450 are gettin hard to find. Most all C366 or
PII450's do 550, lot's make it to 600 mhz and higher. I have a=20
PII 350 at 467 mhz (10 months now, rock solid), ~500mhz is the=20
upper level for PII's.

         I'd suggest you read alt.comp.hardware.overclocking for a
while.

Video card, HDD caution. The main concern with o/c'g is non
standard pci and agp speeds. Current BX motherboards often support
pci dividers as required to keep the pci bus speed in, or close to
spec, but not the agp bus. For example, I have an Aopen ax6bc=20
running my PII350 at 133.6 mhz, FSB. The pci is =BC divided back to=20
the spec 33mhz, but the agp bus is 89mhz (66 is spec). Few agp=20
cards will run this far out'a spec (for long anyhow), so I use a=20
pci V3 (o/c'd to 178mhz in Windows, not Linux). Few HDD's (and no=20
scuzzy's) will tolerate a pci bus too far out'a spec, data loss is=20
the biggest risk. IBM and WD drives are favored, stay away from=20
Maxtor. =20

        Lot's of Celery's o/c, eg, C366 At 550mhz, best PII is the 350,
I've run mine at 3.5x133.6 (467.7mhz) for 10 months now. It and all=20
the
Deschutes PII's are the same core (PII333 thru PII450), but the 350=20
doesn't need to have the B21 pin defeated to run FSB's of 100 or more.
The best PIII is the 450, many get those to 600+ mhz, all will do=20
558mhz.

If you read the o/c'ing NG, I believe you'll find that Intel
makes the best o/c'rs, AMD the worst (that's why they don't bother
to 'lock' 'em ;) The trick is to not get a cpu that Intel's already
o/c'd, eg, the PII450, the PIII600, the C500. AMD marks and sells
theirs very near to the core's limits, often a 30 to 50 mhz increase
is all that's possible. Cyrix and WinChips aren't even worth the=20
bother to o/c.

To answer the original question, most all Intel cpu's prior to
8/98 were either not locked at all (the internal multplier), or it
was 'limited', ie, you could lower, but not raise it. All Intel cpu's
will o/c by raising the FSB frequency, often just a bios setting.
Good quality cas2 pc100 or pc133 ram is needed for the higher (>100)=20
FSB's, along with a motherboard that supports non standard FSB's. =20

CPU's (and ram) can be underclock'd, but why?

That 440, an inexpensive printer IIRC, may also be a 'winprinter'. If
it says on the box that it requires a windoze installation with at least
a 133 mhz cpu, then it probably is. So far, such printers have had a
proprietary language because all of the rasterizing required to even
print "Hello World" has been moved from the printer into the driver on
the host machine.

Good luck, but you may be forced to replace it with a more capable unit,
or wait till 2.4 is out, I hear a rumor about partial winmodem support,
and its possible some printers may also be included.

Not particularly helpful, but might provide some info that might help:
I boot Linux off my second hard drive (slave on my first IDE chain)
all the time. Both RedHat 6.0 and Mandrake 6.0 (don't ask) installed
it nicely and automatically.

Might there be a conflict between boot magic and lilo? I installed
Lilo to my MBR (on my first disk, a smaller one that I keep Losedos on
"just in case").
