Try using of=/dev/null in your command above, and note the time it takes to
run. Is there any significant change in the run time? If not, then the tape
drive was not your problem.
Is the tape drive on the same SCSI bus with the disk? Can they be placed on
separate SCSI busses?
Does the DLT7000 have lights on the front panel indicating the density and
state of compression?

Unfortunately, there is one exception to the "all scsi is good" rule - the
Onstream tape drive does NOT work currently, though I understand that they
are working on a driver (which is good, because it does look like a nice
drive).

Thanks Colonel...

I can't compile the driver's source code!
I don't know why(maybe a problem with libraries I've got installed?) but
I get a TON of errors and warnings when trying to use gcc to compile.
Any thoughts?

Bill,
I like your suggestion. Specially since I don't have to worry about media
life and since I can put some cool tracks on CDs. What CDRW drive do you
recommend and how much is it? How much are the CDs?

And also don't forget that the 128k cache is running at full core
speed rather than 1/2 speed that you'd find on the PII. I think
for most applications the faster 2 x 128k would be more beneficial
than 2 x 512k running at half the speed of the processor. I'd love
to see some benchmarks for typical system tasks.

I think this is probably a rare occurance and you'd almost have to
specifically design the task to behave this badly.

For homebuilt systems, I'd agree that it's rather silly not to do
dual celerons unless you have an application that would benefit
enough from the additional (but slower) cache to justify the
substantial increase in cost.

Date: Wed, 26 May 1999 12:54:03 +0900
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Big problem with the Sparkle Video card sp365-2
anyway I have bought the sparkle sp365-2
I have bought drivers for solaris and linux from Xi Graphics
(http://www.xig.com/)
but the card cannot be assigned an IRQ on the computer (Nt can be
installed - it probably doesn't need IRQ assignments) but I dont
want to run NT.
it definitely seems that the computer is not recognizing the board
and it is not a bung card problem(I have 20 of them and they all have
the same problem)
Anyway my xwindows wont run because the driver doesnt even see the chip
here is what I can explain:
after the first bios (on a BX-440B motherboard)blurb there is a page
with irq and
address numbers it says
0 7 1 8086 7111 IDE Controller 14
0 7 2 8086 7112 SERIAL Bus Controller 11
1 0 0 5333 8A13 DISPLAY Controller NA
Even if I set the switch in the bios to enable for: Assign IRQ for VGA
there is no change;
I have tried switching off all other IRQs eg: serial parallel etc but to
no avail. I have spent 5 days off work just trying to muck around with
the bios but I have haad no success
If I put my Hercules card in the same machine sure enough an IRQ gets
assigned
because the hercules card has on board jumpers for "VGA Fixed Addr"
On the sparkle card there is a row of 13 jumpers (with no information
whatsoever)
I tried 1 jumper on each and found out that jumper3 (from the rear)is
the VGA
enabled/disabled switch but all others have no effect.
There might be a combination of 2 or 3 but I am no lockpick.
When I put the sparkle card in my other motherboard an Asus P2B-S the
same problem
occurs (no IRQ assignment)
Has any one used the sparkle board and did you get an IRQ
assignment?
if not how can I force an assignment?(if as I am to assume? this is the
problem)

Subject: IDE Tape gets I/O errors - used to work
Date: Tue, 25 May 1999 08:32:49 -0400
I'm stumped.
Tape has stopped working. It is a Seagate STT8000A IDE TR-4 which used
to work, but stopped working at some point when I was upgrading and
working on printer/samba problems. Symptoms are:
tar returns this error message:
tar: Cannot write to /dev/ht0: I/O error
dmesg returns a screenful of errors like:
ide-tape: ht0: I/O error, pc = a, key = 4, asc = f0, ascq = 36
or
ide-tape: ht0: I/O error, pc = 34, key = 4, asc = f0, ascq = 36
(I figure the msg above is telling me something useful, but I don't know
what)
bootup screen shows:
VP_IDE: IDE controller on PCI bus 00 dev 39
VP_IDE not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later
ide0: BM-DMA at 0x6400-0x6407, BIOS settings, hda:DMA, hdb:DMA
...
hdb: Seagate STT8000A, ATAPI TAPE drive
...
ide-tape: hdb <-> ht0, 600kBps, 14*26kB buffer, 2600kB pipeline, 310ms
tDSC, DMA
Kernel .config settings are:
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDETAPE=y
CONFIG_QIC02_TAPE is not set
CONFIG_FTAPE is not set
And, of course, nothing gets written to the tape.
Kernel is 2.2.8, but the problem also occurs under 2.2.7, 2.2.6 and
2.0.36.
M/B is a FIC 503+ w/64MB. CPU is K6-2/300. I have checked the drive,
cables and tapes on another machine. Everything worked, so it doesn't
seem to be a hardware problem.
Tape drive is jumpered as slave on ide0. Master on ide0 is a CDROM
which works correctly.
This setup worked with no problems when I was running 2.0.36. After I
upped to 2.2 series, it stopped, and now the tape will not work even on
the 2.0.36 kernel (which I saved) which used to work.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
David Graham

I think I'm having the same problem on the PC of a friend of mine. It's
an Adaptec 2940AU and the distro is SuSE 6.1. On my own PC with a plain
2940 I have had no problems.
The error message is not exactly the same, I believe it had something to
do with timeout during reset, but the no_reset parameter had no effect,
and I get stuck in an endless loop too. I haven't found a FAQ or HOWTO
yet which lists this problem or proposes a solution.
Anyone??

Nope! The two drives are on one channel (SCSI UW), while the other
devices are on the other (SCSI 2) one.

Thanks for the reminder, Tony! I'll make sure to make the
CD/CDRW/Scanner either use the same speed or, since I don't use
the scanner much, turn it off when it isn't in use.

Has anyone got one of these working under linux?
I have three 1gb scsi drives, and is seems a pity
not to be able to use them.
It's not dectected during the install.
RH6.0
