If RH already has the support for this already in their kernel,
then all you do is connect the drive and 'modprobe imm'.

Nothing really to setup. In your BIOS disable COM2, if that is
what your modem is using. make a link for the modem
ln -s /dev/ttyS1 /dev/modem
Run minicom to check the modem, should get an OK prompt if it is
found.
If you are asking setting up an ISP connection, that is a
different issue than the modem working.

Unfortunately, this modem is reported to not work with any version of
Linux that does not have Kernel 2.3 or higher. Unfortunately, there is no
current release of Linux that uses Kernel 2.3 or higher. Just wait, and
it will be out. I am having the exact same problem. If I find anything,
I will let you know what I found.

Can anyone give some workds of wisdom here.
I installed a SIIG ultra dma card and there is a
problem, presumeably with the PNP settings.
These are the relevent messages on boot:
HPT343: IDE controller on PCI bus 00 dev 60
HPT343: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later
HPT343: port 0x01f0 already claimed by ide0
HPT343: port 0x0170 already claimed by ide1
HPT343: neither IDE port enabled (BIOS)
I assume it is saying the BIOS has not initialized it
correctly. Has anyone any ideas about how to get around
this.
Thanks

I think the person is telling you that you have to locate the source code
to the tulip driver ( tulip.c) , and change the "#define" for
"CONFIG_DEC_ELCP"
it could also be in the header file ( tulip.h)
there should be some comments in the file explaining what this does.
Just a guess.

Reading the kernel mailing list archive the other day, I saw someone
who had been reporting corruption with DMA on an ASUS A7V board using
the Promise controller report that the problem was cured when he
switched the drive from slave to master. The thought was that something
in the Linux driver objected to the slave only configuration. I suspect
that this is forbidden in the ATA spec, but that it sort of works in
some cases.
I don't know if a similar situation could exist with the VIA
controller, but currently I have an IBM DTLA 30 gig drive on the A7V's
VIA controller and get about 32 Mbytes/s with UDMA4. So far no FS
corruption that I know about....

You have to load the driver module for the ZipPlus (imm.o) with
modprobe.
and maybe also the SCSI disk driver module sd.o ( if it is available as
module and not allready build into the standard redhat kernel).

has anyone used an external Speedway TA (badged British Telecom, made by
Siemens I think) with Linux?
There is very scant info on it on the web - BT are non-commital about my

I know people have got the Speedway PCI card working ok, but this is an
external unit with serial/USB connection.
Any info or pointers to docs greatly appreciated.

If you don't recognize it, you haven't read your

No modem has a parallel port .. that's nonsense. It's a 25 pin serial
cable plug.

He means "9 pin" instead of "25 pin", or v.v.

She doesn't. USR (now 3Com) makes both Winmodems and hardware modems for
PCI.
I have a USR PCI modem model 3CP2976 and it works fine.
Linux will not recognize (i.e. find) PCI modems without human intervention.
This is because they are set by the BIOS at boot.
They are not hardwired and might change if you install additional hardware.
Do the following as root:
Execute:
lspci -v | less
and look for your modem in the output which should look something like this:
00:12.0 Serial controller: US Robotics: Unknown device 1008 (rev 01)
(prog-if 02)
Subsystem: Unknown device 12b9:00aa
Flags: medium devsel, IRQ 14
I/O ports at bc00
Capabilities: [dc] Power Management version 2
If you find an I/O port and an IRQ, then continue.
Using the values from mine for example {yours will be different and you need
to use them}
Execute:
setserial /dev/ttyS2 port 0xbc00 irq 14 autoconfig
setserial -g /dev/ttyS2
If the second command answers with a UART type number, then you have a real
modem.
Otherwise you probably have a Winmodem.
Then you need to make a file in the same directory as "rc.local". This
should be in "/etc/rc.d/".
#!/bin/bash
setserial /dev/ttyS2 port 0xbc00 irq 14 autoconfig
{again, use your values}
This should be: root:root 700 {it must be executable}
Then you modem should be installed as "ttyS2" and you can configure your
dial up software.

Hello.
I have downloaded the Hendick's patches for ATA100. There were not msg about
how to use it there. So I have read the manual for patch and tried to use it
as written in manual. It has said:
patch: **** strip count num is not a number
I do not know if it is good or bad or what does it mean. I can see some hde,
hde1, hde4, hde5 ... hdf, hdf1 ..etc in /dev
I have connected the new disk and after starting the linux I have tried to
mount the hard drive. It said:
mount: the kernel does not recognize /dev/hde4 as a block device
(maybe `insmod driver'?)
What does it mean? What should I do?
Thanks for any help.
