Reading this post, I was wondering : why shouldn't it work ? Is any driver
required to type something ?

I think (thought) that from the OS's point of view, the fact that a
keyboard has a wire or not has no importance since it should send
the same signals.

Am I wrong ?

   There ain't no such thing. :-) A CSU/DSU takes 4 wire 56k/64k or T1 and
converts it to V.35 or RS232 Sync or Async. There are T1 interface cards
with built in CSU/DSUs and 4 wire ports. I assume there are 56k/64k
interface cards as well, but I have not seen them. I thnik you need to
look again at what you want, and what it will connect through/to.

Subject: SBLive...please help
Date: Wed, 26 May 1999 08:15:37 GMT

I'm running SuSE6.0 and have a seemingly redundant SBLive Value card. Has
anyone actually managed to get this working yet? Would someone be kind
enough to give me a walkthrough, from the very begining, or at least
critique what I've done so far:

- Downloaded the beta drivers from Creative. Read the README, natch.
Thoroughly scanned deja news, diligently noting problems everyone else has had.

- Recompiled the kernel. I set "sound support" to "M", and "/dev/dsp and
/dev/audio support" to "y". I included no other drivers support. Is this
right? Do I need to include Soundblaster support?

- After recompiling, compiling and installing the modules, I run the SBLive
install and it works fine and asks me to reboot.

- Reboot

- Do an "insmod soundcore". This reports "no module soundcore can be found"
or something. Doing "modporbe sblive" reports the same thing. Doing "insmod
sblive" give a list of .o files that are not found (I forget the details).
Where does the soundcore device come from?

- No sound!

I would really appreciate any help I can get on this. As far as I can tell,
I'vwe done everything right so far...I'm desperate to get my sound
working...so could a guru please take pity on me?

Thanks in advance

Mounting was never the issue. It was booting, or formatting, or making
boot floppies that was the problem. It is almost impossable to get them to
make a bootable 1.44 floppy in anything but Win9x, and damned hard under
NT. If you have solutions, I would love them!

It isn't style, but the fact that they are so hard to find. And

Why are you sure it's not a Winmodem? It has at least two
"red flags" that seem to shout "winmodem!" to me: first,
it's PCI, second it's not being recognized by the linux
serial devices.

Subject: ISA sound card WILL NOT work correctly, regardless of what I do
Date: 26 May 1999 08:33:50 GMT

I'm really running out of options here -- I've tried just about everything to
make this sound card work.

I'm running RH6.0, and am attempting to configure my Crystal CS4232 PnP card
to work with this OS.

I have used isapnptools to inform the machine of my sound card's existence,
which was only partially successful. Whenever I play a file or URL on a sound
application, a one second clip will play and repeat itself over and over again
on an infinite loop. I checked the sound documentation regarding this
problem, and it says that it's typically caused by conflicting IRQ or DMA
settings. Howevever, pnpdump *only* offers me IRQ five for the WSS/SB device,
which is reported as being used by the Crystal sound card by /proc/interrupts.
But isn't WSS/SB itself the sound card? How can one device's IRQ setting
conflict with its own setting?

But anyway, even if I comment out the IRQ setting for WSS/SB, and type "isapnp
isapnp.conf" again, which yields no conflicts (although an IRQ is probably
needed), my audio applications still behave the same.

I've tried typing "rmmod sound" to remove the sound modules, and start over
again. No -- that doesn't work either. My system reports that "sound is in
use".

I've tried installing the OSS demo from www.4front-tech.com, but it requires
me to remove the sound modules, which of course I can't do.

I've been trying for over a month to get this sound card to work on my
computer, and unless I can get some sound advice on how to solve this problem,
I'm going to have to give up.

I listen to all of my music on my computer, and ever since I replaced Windows95
with Linux, it's been awfully quiet in here. Will somebody please save me, and
CC their reply to my address?

Thank you.

I couldn't get my Panasonic CW-7502 CD-R drive to work with my
IWill 2935UW SCSI card under linux so please be aware of this
combination. It may be the card or it may be the drive or it may be
the driver, I don't yet know.

I have no problems with this combination in Win!@#s.

The drive only has 1MB on board (Sony's has 2MB) and supports
digital audio extraction (DAE), multisession and other things that
a good CD drive should have (apart from the speed).

Does anybody know whether there is a drive overlay program that works with
linux and my WD hard drive. I have a 10G hard drive and I am using EZdrive
because my motherboard bios will not recognize anything over 8.4G. Linux
has a problem with this drive and if I try to install linux it always gives
me a mounting error. I was using Redhat 5.2. Also, if I try to partion the
drive with Partion Magic it does not even see the partitions. Unless I can
find such a program my options will be to go with a newer motherboard which
I can't afford right now or a isa card that will allow the use of such
drives from Data Tecnology.

    Thanks,
        Roger

Fast-Wide SCSI-2 is backward compatible with Fast-SCSI-2. This means a user
can mix Fast-Wide SCSI-2 controllers with Fast-SCSI-2 drives and vice versa
as long as the cable connectors are all mated properly. This backward
compatibility is made possible by individual drive negotiation that takes
place between controller and drive during the selection phase as described
above. An 8-bit SCSI controller can communicate with 16-bit drives but does
so only via an 8-bit data path. A 16-bit SCSI controller can talk with
8-bit drives but only uses half the width of the SCSI bus.

WIDE-ULTRA SCSI-3 COMPATIBI LITY
Wide-Ultra SCSI-3 is backward compatible with previous generations of SCSI,
which means that
Wide-Ultra SCSI-3 devices can use the same cables, connectors, and
terminators as Fast-Wide
SCSI-2 devices. Also, a mixture of Wide-Ultra, Fast-Wide, and Fast SCSI
drives can coexist on
the same SCSI bus. The decision to operate using a particular SCSI protocol
is made on a drive-by-
drive basis during the negotiation phase between each drive and the SCSI
controller. This
negotiation phase occurs as part of the boot-up process. A SCSI controller
is a SCSI device that
acts as the gateway between the SCSI bus and the servers internal I/O bus.
The SCSI controller
transfers commands and data between devices on the SCSI bus and the server.

The maximum transfer rate between the SCSI controller and each disk drive on
the bus is
determined by the native protocol of the slowest device. It is possible for
a Fast-Wide SCSI-2
controller to communicate with both Fast-Wide SCSI-2 disk drives and
Wide-Ultra SCSI-3 disk
drives. If a Wide-Ultra SCSI-3 disk drive is attached to a Fast-Wide SCSI-2
controller, the
maximum data transfer rate is that of the Fast-Wide SCSI-2 controller. The
inverse is also true
a Wide-Ultra SCSI-3 controller can be used with Fast or Fast-Wide SCSI-2
drives. For the two
devices to operate in Wide-Ultra SCSI-3 mode, both the SCSI controller and
the disk drive must
be Wide-Ultra SCSI-3 enabled.

Ensure clean SCSI signals Check SCSI cables, bus termination and
termination power.

When using Fast SCSI devices, the maximum cable length for the SCSI bus
should be limited to about 10 feet (including internal cabling).

Poor quality cables can cause signal problems. High quality external cables
tend to be fairly stiff. Cables as flexible as a printer cable are usually
of poor quality.

Different types of cables on a single bus can cause problems. Avoid mixing
SCSI cable types and transitions from one cabinet to another.
