If the manufacturer offers such a bios update ... I have at home two 200MB
SCSI-disks which I took out of a similar machine you have now. They worked
fine under Windows 3.1, but I couldn't make linux talk to the onboard SCSI-
controller properly. So I used some old IDE-Disks... If you want to have
the SCSI-Disks sent over from Switzerland, send me a mail. You'll only have
to pay the transport ;-)

I installed the old machine over the network using nfs. It was (with Debian)
quite tricky and I had to customize a boot floppy (I used tomsrtbt on
www.toms.net) to make it work... But I did not have to install a CD-drive :-)

I was thinking the same thing; plus which a drop from 256 Mb to 128 has
got to impact performance. One thought - is SMP still compiled into the
kernel?

Cableing for 100 meg is *much* more critical. Replace it with good cat
5 stuff, properly terminated. One of those 2" long double female cable
couplers can and will kill a 100 connection instantly. When terminating
it, the less the length of cable pairs untwisted to get into the plug,
the better, ideally the last twist is against the back of the plastic
plug. And some of those nice convienient wall plugs for cat 5? They
leave 2 plus inches worth of vswr causeing bumps. We use them at 10,
but they come out for reliable 100, pulling the cable thru the box and
all the way to the cpu's back connector in an unbroken run.
Cheers, Gene

Subject: Hardware modem in Linux
Date: Mon, 31 Jul 2000 09:23:27 -0500
Hi,
I am a new user to Linux. I am trying to get Linux to recognize my external
hardware modem (thanks Gary Segal!). However, I can't get Linux to see the
modem. Can someone quickly run thru the modem install process for my
edification, I'm thinking I don't fully understand the process. Thanks in
advance.
Pertinant details of system:
Redhat Linux 6.2 (don't have the Redhat manual however)
Practical Peripherals 9600SA external hardware (not Winmodem) modem
Modem on COM3 (have a Digital Research(?) COM port extender card in my PC to
add additional COM ports, it is configured to COM3.
Modem is functional -- Win98 sees the modem on COM3, and I have successfully
connected to my ISP using the modem.

I have installed RedHat 6.2...using the KDE workstation option...it's great
and all except for one little thing...
Seems I can configure my modem using the KPPP tool, and I can connect to the
internet and all....
I can also run sndconfig from a console, and get my SoundBlaster AWE64
working....the thing is, is after I configure my soundcard, my modem will
not work anymore...I get the message "The modem is busy"
I have tried to configure the soundcard first, but then I cannot configure
the modem...which by the way is a US Robotics 56K V90 Internal.
My modem is on COM1.....dev/ttyS0
Has anyone else experienced this before, and know a way to make both pieces
of hardware work together in harmony...
TIA!

Subject: Wavelan card not talking
Date: Mon, 31 Jul 2000 14:59:59 GMT
We have configured the Wavelan card onto Linix, PCMCIA recognises this
card with no problems. The card is visable via IFCONFIG, the power
light is constantly on, and the communication light flashes every 10
seconds or so. This is the only Linux system we have and would like to
get it working in Ad-Hoc mode.
The other wireless cards are running Win98 and W2000 with no problems,
on channel 6 with WEP disabled. This is the line we have in config.opts
module "wavelan2_cs" opts "network_name=NETWORK port_type=3 channel=6"
The only symtom of anything wrong is the following error reported in
var/log/messages
kernel: eth1: Transmit timeout.
Any ideas where we should look now?

AFAIK the card uses a AIC7810 chip , which isn't supported (accordding

Interesting one. Some motherboards, including recent ones, have a
deficiency in the BIOS which means that when Linux queries the BIOS
to ffind how much memory the system has the BIOS replies 64Mb even
when there is much more available.
Given that your kernel only sees 16Mb may indicate the the weird OS/2
memory compatibility option is turn on in your BIOS. Try turning this off
and if the system still doesn't see all 128Mb then add a boot parameter
to the kernel of mem=128M - you can try this at the LILO prompt
(linux mem=128M) and if that works add an append line to your LILO
config file.

ripperX is a similar sort of program. It is my favorite ripper.

The term "popular" is MEANINGLESS in consumer computing. DOS3
was more "popular" than contemporary Macintoshes despite the
likelihood that someone like you would pay the extra money to
not have to deal with DOS3.
Network effects are everything in computing.

A cheap SCSI 300x300 scanner (umax) can be had for ~ $60.
A cheap PCI SCSI2 card (tekram) can be had for ~ $30.
[deletia]
Also, StarOffice has a SANE acquisition applet built in.

Subject: SBLIVE can't record from SPDIF in
Date: Mon, 31 Jul 2000 19:07:47 +0200
In installed the sblive in my system.
Got the drivers from opensource.creative.com.
Compiled and installed the without any hassle.
Jul 30 23:31:38 mirage kernel: Creative EMU10K1 PCI Audio Driver,
version 0.6, 22:50:19 Jul 30 2000
Jul 30 23:31:38 mirage kernel: emu10k1: EMU10K1 rev 7 model 0x8040
found, IO at
0xd400-0xd41f, IRQ 9
Everything works fine. Recording / Playback from all sources. Except for
one, that is the SPDIF in. I can playback, but I cannot record from it.
The kmix program from kde doesn't allow me to set the spdif slider as
'RecSource'.
I can record from spdif in MS-Windows, so it is supported by the
hardware.
How do I do this in Linux???
