Try having netscape install it's own colormap by typing 'netscape -install' you
want to use netscape.

Subject: Tape Drive Advice-Help!

Hi,
In the office I have an HP9000 -755 model workstation. Its got
a SCSI tape drive of the following info:

                    Surestore tape 5000 (HP)
                    4mm DDS
/dev/rmt/0m /* this is the device file it's
using
                                                     and the comments
says;

                                                     Berkeley,
                                                     autorewind,
                                                     uncompressed */

I would just dump files into it using the tar command.
At times, I would need to continue my work at home and I have a
Linux box without a SCSI controller and a tape drive.
I need to put one in my Linux box. Please anyone can advice which
one is most suitable for my Linux box.
I've heard that some tape drives now are available for Linux and
they are quite well supported. Which brand and model should I
choose -one that would be compatible with my HP tape drive?
I would like it also to do a high capacity backup- at least 10 Gigs.
Thanks in advance.

Maybe you should try moving the cards to different pci slots. Perhaps the most
inelegant solution at all, but worth a try. I've got two 3c905b nics in my
machine and they work just fine...they are the first two pci cards on the mobo.

We had pretty crappy luck with the FastTrak under _NT_. We tried it from
about Feb to April of this year and gave up on it. Our SQL server was far
too unstable, and the performance gains were just not there. After each
freeze or BOD, we were able to reboot, go through the RAID fixup, and keep
on going. But on 4 6GIG drives, this was quite time consuming. Compared
to our other servers, it was far more productive to restore from tape when
necessary. It seemed like a load issue, because it would crap out at the
busiest times of the day. Of course, YMMV, but our experience as quite poor
on an supposedly 'well supported platform'... Perhaps it was a driver
issue, perhaps the card itself. But it was just not worth our time then to
keep on pissing around with it.

I use an HP SureStore Tape 6000 on my Linux box with either BRU or
Taper. Works great. You may be able to find at a discount as HP has
discontinued this model. Uses 4 mm DDS2 tapes. Only problem is capacity
- 8 Gigs. I think you have to go to DDS3 to get more than 8 gigs.

Floor plans for buildings and facilities,
       Architectural Drafting,
Front end for programmable rendering systems like OpenGL,
Can be used to replace ACAD in every application later is used !!!

Linux CAD is an AutoCAD for Linux for all practical purposes it implements
all major features of ACAD in such a way that new users (who had ACAD experience
before)
do not need any additional training to start working with Linux CAD.

For users of previous versions: free upgrade available for download.

For new users: our Intel version as usually only $99

The rpopen patch worked for me. Make sure in the rplayer script, that
the "dir=..." line indicates correctly the directory where the main
program (rvplayer) is, and that you have the open.so library in the same
directory.

The reason for the bare gray screen is that you haven't loaded a window
manager. The choices are things like fvwm, fvwm2, fvwm95, kde, gnome,
enlightenment, afterstep, etc. One of these is usually launched from
your $HOME/.xinitrc file. If you don't have one, try looking in your
distribution's /etc/skel directory for a .xinitrc file.

If you have a stock HP Pavilion, try looking on http://www.hp.com for
the video hardware specs. This will help you provide X with a more
precise hardware description.

Matthew,

There should be no problem with them on the same interrupt, but on
the same port is a problem.

The BIOS _should_ set up the cards before Linux has a chance to look
at them.

First thing I would try is turning OFF all attempts to control the
IRQ & I/O. Then look in /var/log/messages to see what the kernel found
on the way up.

Try the cards one at a time. You may have one dead card. Or one
dead slot; I have found motherboards where interrupts worked in only 3
of the 4 PCI slots. The slot ordering can have an impact too; try
swapping all the PCI cards around.

3COM has some pretty good diagnostics on their web site. Download
those, and see what they think of your hardware.

Gary.

Subject: Problems with Parallel Port ZIP100
Date: Tue, 1 Jun 1999 00:05:21 -0500

I'm having trouble getting my parallel port ZIP 100 Drive to work with
Redhat 5.2, kernel 2.0.36. I compiled the scsi support as part of the
kernel and the ppa as a module. I've tried everything I can think of so
I'll try to give as much info as possible. I've tried changing to port
settings in the BIOS to SPP, ECP, EPP, ECPEPP . . . but it doesn't seem to
help. When linux loads it says:
    scsi : 0 host.
    scsi : detected total.

then when I log on as root:
    insmod ppa returns
   ppa : Version 1.42
   ppa : Probing port 03bc
   ppa : Probing port 0378
   ppa : SPP port present
ppa : ECP with a 16 byte FIFO present
ppa : PS/2 bidirectional port present
ppa : Failed Intel bug check (phony EPP in ECP)
   ppa : Probing port 0278
   scsi : 0 host
   ./ppa.o : init_module : Device or resource busy

=====
0x378 is the address of my parallel port.
In conf.modules I have:
   alias scsi_hostadapter ppa

I've disabled printer support when compiling the kernel.
I've read the Zip-drive HOWTO, README.ppa, the installation guide and
probably a lot of other documentation but with no luck. While looking
through some of the previous posts, someone said that for newer drives (I've
had mine for 5 months), the ppa driver won't work and to use the imm driver.
Could this be the cause of my problems? I'm somewhat new to linux, so I
suspect I might be missing something else ( probably simple). Any help
would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Josh Highley

Not too sure of a solution, I've not had a 2.2 related problem with the
Mustek SE12000SP, but an idea to try.
1) cat /proc/scsi/scsi before and after, sometimes if there is a timeout
on the bus the scanner can get taken off the device list.
2) If it has vanished, power cycle the scanner then (as root)
        echo "scsi add-single-device 0 0 6 0" > /proc/scsi/scsi
(this is device ID 6 on bus 0, I can't quite recall which 0 is which,
check the sane-scsi man page).

Just install the Adaptec card, reboot and load the module for the
adaptec card. You do not need a new kernel:
