Subject: Re: SVGATextMode Config Problems

I am using a S3 968 as well but with a IBM Ramdac. I
think it is the problem of the clock time you have. My
S33 968 has a programmable clock that I don't have to
specify any clocks inside the
SVGATextconfig..(whatever). But I never have them display correctly.
Either they are skew to the right or left, never in the
center. And another thing is with Xfree86 3.3.2,
whenever I finished using X, and return to text mode,
the screen will screw up. YOu will have to restart the
Svgatext again. Not sure if that has been fixed in
3.3.3.1. I am now give up trying to set up the right
mode line for SVGAtext. I just using xterm inside the
X win.
If you can get any mode line working, may be you can
mail me as well.
Thanks.

I heard u dont have to worry about this b/c its not an actaul monitor, just
an LCD screen. But I heard that AFTER i had already configured mine using
I believe the lowest settings for both refresh and scan frequencies. I
didnt know what to set mine to either and i didnt want to hurt anything so
i just picked low values for both fields. AFter I read that they dont need
scan frequencies, or maybe both values I just left them alone anyway. My
laptop works fine with the low values entered, whether it uses them or not,
it works fine.
hope this helps
If u need any other help ask me. I got linux on my toshiba satellite
working just fine, took me a few days, but i got it. The hardest parts
were the mouse and modem.

That is NOT correct for all systems !
Unlike the SERIAL ports, where the numbering starts with 0 (and therefor
com1 = /dev/cua0 etc) the numbering for parralel ports starts ON MOST
SYSTEMS with 1 !
Hence LPT1=/dev/lp1 in most cases.
(In fact on all the systems I had this was the case, however I vaguely
recall having heard about it depending on the bios or something and it
sometimes being /dev/lp0....)
Just my 2 Cents

Yes, for commandline driven Linux, it is no problem, if you want to run X,
you'll need the 3DLabs package. It's readily available at most major Linux

Tell that to Digital (well, Compaq), who have been selling X clients
and servers under VMS for years. The point of X is that, like TCP/IP,
it is designed to be pretty much platform-*transparent*. In fact it is
even network-transparent; assuming your OS has the necessary underlying
support, it can run comfortably on TCP/IP, Unix domain sockets and
DECnet. (And maybe others; those are the ones I know about.)
The X libraries have been ported to NT; it's just that pretty much
nobody bothers to port, compile and run X clients on NT.

Basically as I understand it Interix provides an alternative API to
the Win32, Win16 and OS/2 modules NT comes with. And apparently it
does not interact too seamlessly with Win32 (and other) apps.
Thanks but no thanks. If I wanted a slow Unix clone that isn't really
very Unixy and runs on a bloated microkernel, I'd use the Hurd. (Not
really making a comparison here. No offense to Hurd people.)

if you need the gpm running in the console, then remove the '-R' from

I hope your English isn't as poor as my French. Yes it is possible to
use X with the Diamond Fire Gl 1000 Pro. You need to get the special

Again ok ok ok
So I didn't screw up thins so badly.
I saw Stephen Skrodzki's setting for his different card but same chipset
and got some of the way.
his suggested settings were:
Section "Device"
Identifier "PCChips 100 AGP"
VendorName "PCChips"
BoardName "pc100"
Chipset "sis6326"
Option "no_bitblt"
Option "sw_cursor"
# Option "fast_vram"
# Option "edo_vram"
# Option "pci_burst_on"
# Option "noaccel"
VideoRam 8192
EndSection
Regards
Steve
Afterwards I tried a few other options because it still is not 100%
working. The symptoms are:
virtual screen appears
two windows appear - both windows are so tall that the bottoms disappear
off the bottom of my 17" screen.
I move the mouse and with one short movement and the pointer, normally
shaped, goes to the top of the screen and moves jerkedly left or right
as I try to move the mouse in all directions.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Mike

To fix your backspace problem put an .Xmodmap file in your home directory with
the following in it:
keycode 22 = BackSpace
keycode 107 = Delete
Also if you are using Xemacs you should use Windowmaker instead of Afterstep
as your window manager. Afterstep screws up C^v. There is an old version (.2
something) of Windowmaker on the Redhat 5.2 CDROM that seems to work OK. You
can find a newer version (.51) on the windowmaker.org website. So far I
haven't experienced any problems with Windowmaker.

1) 3dnow required for great gaming support? hardly. if you're serious
about doing those heavy duty 3d rendered games with texture maps, get
yourself a nice 3d accelerated card with 16M onboard.
of course, then those games will need to be ported, which probably won't
happen en masse until an API (something like DirectX on widows) is
present. (something existing like OpenGL or GGI may fit this, i really
don't know the details...)
2) the linux kernel doesn't need to support 3Dnow, the compiler does, and
there's already support being worked into egcs. then you just need to
compile your program with it. oh, and don't forget that then your
proggie won't run on any non-3Dnow chips unless you carefully split the
code into seperate run time libs.

I've been running it for a while. CD works, internal modem is a winmodem
so no-go. Most everything works. Keyboard has a tendency to double letters.
I had to do some fancy dancing to load it the first time, because I didn't
have the docking station at the time, and the redhat install wouldn't
recognize network pc card. Network card is ok after skipping several IRQ's in
/etc/pcmcia/config.opts.

Grahame & Steve:
I've just gotten an 8-meg 6326 running, via XFree86 3.3.3.1 (turned out
there was an RPM for Red Hat 5.2 that made it easy). My settings within
/etc/X11/XF86Config are:
Section Device
Identifier "sis6326"
VideoRam 8192
DacSpeed 170 # 175 max according to driver README file
Option "fast_vram"
Option "sw_cursor" #without it I get a white square for cursor
EndSection
Section Screen
Driver "SVGA"
Device "sis6326"
Monitor (whatever..)
Subsection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1024x768" "1280x1024" "640x480" "800x600"
Virtual 1024 768
Viewport 0 0
End Subsection
End Section
This works well for me, but my monitor can handle fast scan rates. The
default of 'startx' is the first mode, and the Virtual 1024 768 sets the
screen size so everything fits. Ctl-alt-+ moves you thru the modes,
but I've ordered them so the best is first.
The driver is probably full of bugs, and supposedly has only been tested
on a few boards, but graphics look good done this way.

Take a look at my web page on ths ess1868 card. I don't think there's
much difference between that and your 1869...
