I'm new at Linux. i use the same motherboard with Maxtor 8,4 hdd on an
AMDK6 II 350 @400 mhz with 160mb ram.
What is the use of the driver you are talkin abt? I mean, do i need to
install it for a faster pc? or what?
I use Slackware40...
I had some problems compiling the kernel. It gave me some errors and the
zImage did not exist, can it be related to the problem you are talkin abt?

thanks

I have one that I bought used, and it works fine. I have no experience
with DOS on them machine, other than deleting it to install linux.

I guess the only information I can provide is that T2105's can run linux.

Honestly, I think that the SB 16 PCI is the SB PCI64 under a new name.
Probably to distance themselves from the Audio PCI name

both are 16 bit sound cards for the PCI BUS
both use a soft file for MIDI instruments

and the creative site makes no mention of a SB16 PCI under the SB 16 family of
cards

Subject: RipTide driver support?
Date: Fri, 04 Jun 1999 16:15:40 GMT

Hi Braniacs,

I'm using a friend's HP Pavilion 4440 (AMD K-2 333MHz) that has a
RipTide modem/sound chip (Rockwell Semiconductor Systems), and I'm
having difficulty getting Linux to recognize it. From what I gather
from my 'net searching, RipTide's Linux driver may or may not be
supported at the alpha or beta stage.

Other pertinent factors:
The kernels I've tried are 2.0.35 and 2.2.9.
RipTide is supposedly 100% SB compatible, has WaveStream 64, HRTF-3D
(A3D), MPU-401 interface, and I2S support.

Thanks y'all,

The tool you will need is 'mknod', which creates special files.
The major number for /dev/sd* is 8, and the minor follows the following
formula:
(16 * char) + val
char == 0 if /dev/sda, 1 if /dev/sdb, etc
val  == 1 if /dev/sda1, 2 if /dev/sda2, etc
val will be 0 for the /dev/sda device.

So, figure out how to use mknod ('man mknod'). Then, for example, to
create /dev/sda1, type 'mknod /dev/sda1 b 8 1'.

Also, look at the /dev/MAKEDEV script. I think this script automates this
whole process and will do whole groups of devices.

Toodles,

Jimmy

I've got an ugly solution for it... it's based on an older (2.0.30) version
of the smc-mca driver (I think, haven't got the machine close to check with)

I was going to clean it up and publish it earlier but then I noticed the
driver I had based it on had been updated and thought I'd work it in there
and then send patches to whomever it may concern (that'd be Chris B, right?)

I can send it you first thing Monday if you want it.

How many ESDI disks do you have? The Linux-MCA kernel has a known bug

Well I've set up three or four of these for PPP servers and such. Init strings
seem to be things of the past. A proper way is to program your modem once and
for all (you could specify 2 different configs) and then forget about it, simply
issue atz1 or atz2 (and this init string is easy to remember, you can use it for
chat, minicom, etc.) You should know your modem commands. Basically, it's always
a good idea to set &b1, &h1, &i0, &k1 and &r2.

Either your disk itself is going bad or the format is. I would suggest
reformatting it under a windows machine (the format is very odd, with four
partitions being made) so it can be read by both windows and linux machines,
unless you want to use it only under linux. In that case I would fdisk it,
create one partition, and ext2 format the disk.

Try to reformat it first, that worked for me a few weeks ago when I was
getting the same problem. Then try another disk and see if the same errors
pop up. If all else fails, use kernel 2.2.5, I know the drive works with it
:-)

it's a old model of packard bell PC, and this one got 32MB memory

BUt when i boots it using the linux boot disk, it goes to a point where
it says "RAMDISK: Compressed image found at block 0" and freezed there.

My question is: is it possible to install linux on my kind system? Have
any body done this before?

Any help is greatly appreciated

Disconnect the harddrive and see if the floppy will boot. If it boots then, you
may have a problem with your harddrive.

I've never had a problem compiling a kernel with make -j, but I did once
get those can't fork errors when compiling (also w/ make -j) an in-house
FEM code. I've got 512 MB RAM/40 MB swap. The recommendation in smp.txt
is actually #CPU's+1 or no number "if you have tons of memory/swap."

You will have to use rdev to tell the kernel where to search for your
root partition. See "man rdev" for more info. Even though you are not
using a ramdisk you might also find some good examples on using rdev in
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/ramdisk.txt

ZIP uses CDROM mode 4, some cdrom drives are identified as the same. Remove
the cdrom drive and
see if the problem still exists. Also try installing the ZIP as master, then

Set your modem initialization string to ATM0DT. That a zero in there. The string
when the speaker is working should be ATDT, if you need help on finding it.

Try the netcfg tool. There should be a setting for the modem init string in
there somewhere under the ppp device.
