Hi everybody,
I have a problem with my system. I put a new SCSI HD into my box. First,
everything seems to be pretty nice, but when the maximal mount count is
reached, the trouble begins:
> Parallelizing fsck version 1.10 (24-Apr-97)
> /dev/sdc1 has reached maximal mount count, check forced
> scsi0: Tagged Queuing now active for Target 3
> /dev/sdc1: 15738/2232320 files (3.8% non-contiguious), 3836780/8924076 blocks
==> system hangs, only hard reset helps. Now the system comes up with
> /dev/sdc1: clean, 15738/2232320 files, 3836780/8924076 blocks
???
Have a look at the attached files to have some more information...
I can work with it, but I am not sure for how long it will take to mess
it all up... (BTW: it is Kernel v. 2.0.36 from SuSE 5.0).
Does anybody know what could get me around that without updating the
whole system?
Regards,
Stephan

mail servers are the same in win95 and Linux.
there's no need to contact Duke people because the server does work, since
I can dowload my mail from it in Wind95.
It something else, I think.

Subject: Ultrastor 24F EISA Problems
Date: Sun, 6 Jun 1999 15:42:48 +0100
Hi all
I'n trying to set up RedHat 5.2 on an old 486/66 with 32MB ram and an
UltraStor 24F EISA SCSI controller.
I have a TEAC CD532S SCSI CD drive and an old Micropolis SCSI hdd.
Setup detects the UltraStor OK but can't find any devices on the SCSI bus.
This is strange because it all worked fine with Win98...
The kernel messages just show garbage for the manufacturer of the UltraStor.
Any ideas or suggestions ?
TIA

Apparently this motherboard that I was looking at (the GCT MediaGX
board) has its own on-board audio. Really I am more interested in
getting that to work than the MediaGX's built in audio.
Perhaps I will be brave and buy it anyway...

as long as the devices and controller support disconnection, I think
that's all that's required.

Alas no. Some of the older Asus P2B boards with integrated aic78xx chipsets
wouldn't do this. I'm told Asus (or perhaps Adaptec) has released a patch,
but supporting disconnection is no guarantee.

Hi guys,
I am trying to install LINUX. This was without too much problems however
I do not know what to choose for my VGA card driver (the VGA card I own
is a chaintech DESPERADO AGP-SI30 with a SiS6326 chipset, adaptor type

Also I still have to install my soundcard. This one is integrated on the

So any pointers of how to do this is also nice to have.
Any help most welcome.

Date: Sun, 06 Jun 1999 16:50:54 GMT
Hi all:
I'm really tired of booting into Win every time I have to burn a cd.
My CDR drive is listed among supported both at cdrecord and cdrdao
webpages, and I'm using the most recent versions of these programs.
With both programs I get the same problem -- a SCSI error just when I
start burining a disk. I suspect that it writes TOC, and then, just when
the actual data is supposed to be written, it gives me "SCSI retryable
error" message.
I'm using the latest kernel, and both of my SCSI drives (the Panasonic
and Plextor CDROM) are recognized correctly at bootup. They both
function correctly as CDROMs -- extract data and audio w/o a problem...
I sure hope that there is a way of hacking it. Any pointers highly
appreciated!
Thanks!

Hi,
I am trying to add a new database on a dedicated disk partition
say /dev/hda6 and I would like to use raw disk partition for this
new database as opposed to using a unix file system (I used the
unix or linux file system to host my first database). When I try
to map this raw disk partition as the device for this new database,
Sybase complains that it is block special device and not a character
special device. Once I create a disk partition (using fdisk or the
disk druid utility of Red Hat), how do I create a character special
device out of that? May be it is Linux question. I would appreciate
if someone could point me in the right direction here (such as which
commands to do "man pages" for etc.).

Sybase complains about anything you make on Linux because Linux doesn't
(yet) support raw disk access. It still treats the raw partitions as
block devices. It's warned about creating database files and about
using 'raw' partitions on Linux. It all still works.
I've got three sybase servers running on devices like /dev/sdb2 and
/dev/hda1 and so forth and they work fine.
It doesn't matter what format the raw partition is because Sybase goes
and writes its own stuff right over it.

you're kidding!! really? that's really bad. the 78xx chipset is
usually pretty functional. I know the adaptec adapters have funny
termination issues (they need 'half terminators' when mixing wide and
narrow devices on the same physical chain). but its hard to believe
that they behave like ide when mixing fast and slow devices on the
same bus!!
do you have anything in writing to support this? I don't disbelieve
you, but its hard to believe they got such a basic thing like this
wrong. especially at what they charge for scsi chipsets.

The 24F is usually only mentioned in passing when I've seen folks discuss
the ultrastor drivers. I suspect it's the "runt of the litter" in terms
of support. Are you sure your devices are terminated properly?
I have 2 of these just gathering dust if you want a few more.

Subject: Timeouts at the scsi-bus :(

hi *,
I'm trying to mix up this things:
(1)SuSE 6.0 + (2)ASUS SP3G/NCR 53c810 + (3)Quantum Lightning 730S +
(4)Toshiba 3401B.
Everything (2-4) works fine with Win9.x and NT4!
The controller is recognized as 53c810 with the 53c8xx-driver.
Linux-installation stops with timeouts at the SCSI-bus after reseting the
bus.
The hardcomp.lists don't show problems with this components...
Without (3) + (4), but with an ibm 1080S the setup won't stop - but I like
to use (1-4)! :-(
Does anybody know a workaround???
regards, Peter

i think the 890c is an GDI-printer, if im right, at the SuSE-page under the
topic "GDI-printers" you can find some help for your problem
good luck

are your cables the best quality? do you have active (usually has an
led on it) terminator? is termination only on the end devices in the
chain?
