At about the time I discovered the wonders(?) of Linux and
repartitioned my disk to take both Win/MS and Linux, my old
28.8 modem expired and I bought what was described as a
"Rockwell 56k Modem". It has worked exceptionally well with
Windoze. As I began to become more acquainted with Linux I
naturally wanted to access the net via my new OS and become
less reliant on BillG and began to wade my way through the
swamp that is lovingly called pppd. After months of trying I
have failed to connect and despite help from D. Richard Hipp,
the author of "Eznet" (highly recommended to those equally
struggling in the swamp - see http://www.hwaci.com/drh/ )
which has been much appreciated I am still drowning. The idea
has come to me that this modem is what I have heard described
as a "Winmodem" i.e. it requires the dreaded MS OS to be
present to work..
Can anyone to tell me what tests I can run to test this
hypothesis ? I thank you all for your help past and present.
It is wonderful to be a member of this community.

That's a micro channel machine. If you are using a 2.x kernel, you must patch
it for micro channel and the IBM SCSI controller. If you can, I'd suggest
building a 2.2 kernel as it has everything you need and build a custom install
disk.

I installed dual NetGear 10/100 PCI cards in three machines under RedHat 5.1
with no problems. The cards are inexpensive ( ~$25.00 US) and supported
using the Digital Tulip drivers.

I would like to solicit comments on the best NIC(pci) to install in a
stock RH5.1 box. I am trying to choose between Intel, 3Com, and SMC (unless
someone knows of any better brand name cards). I would like to use 100m/b
pci cards to network 2 win98 boxes to a Linux server.
Is one brand of NIC more reliable than the other and/or easier to setup?
Any advice and comments are appreciated.

Rockwell makes the chipsets for over half of all modems, real modems and
winmodems alike. If you know the manufacturer or can find any identifying
numbers on the modem, please check this site:

Hello,
while booting, my machine uncompresses linux very slow, though it is a
486DX2/66 with 32 Mb RAM.
I got my BogoMips checked: 33.18. The corresponding number to my system is
33.
Why is the system so slow, though the BogoMips are all right ?
How can I locate the lack of speed to solve the problem ?
It can't be caused by a wrong RAM-config as I'm using a single 32 Mb module.
Can 2 HDDs (master/slave-jumpered) be a reason ?
Thanks for every advice,

it depends on how large your kernel is. if you just kompiled a kernel
containing the most important drivers and load everything else as
modules, the kernel get's a lot smaller and is therefor uncompressed
faster as well. btw. 19secs for a 486dx2/66 doesn'T sound too bad.
the bogomips don't say anything really...that's why they are bogo
mips...or better "bogus mips" you can'T compare two computers by their
bogomips value. my k6-2 has 880 or so and pII 450 is surely faster
than that but i wouldn't be surptised if the bogomips value is less
than mine.

Anyone used one of these? Comments? Just lost a hard drive on my server,
and getting it back up in the middle of the day with users wnating to
access the files via Samba was no joy. I'm looking at some RAID options,
if nothing else, I was just going to have a 2nd drive which I'll put to
sleep using hdparm and dup things to it regularly.

Can anyone help me out here? I got the .c file for my NIC off of the web,

If you are in a directory that is not in your path then you cannot execute a
file by just typing its name - the current directory is not searched (like in
DOS) so use ./<file> to execute <file>

I have an IDE controller (multi io) card I want to use as a secondary
controller.
I need to set it's IRQ to 15 and Port address to 170h - 177h
The problem is I don't know what the jumper settings are. Can anyone help ?
The card looks prety standard. It has UMC controller chips on it, it has
parallel, serial, game, FDD, and HDD connections.
The jumpers that it has are:
j1 ..
j2 .. (This one is used for the HDD light on the front of the
case)
jp1 xx.
jp2 xx.
jp3 xx.
jp4 xx.
jp5 xx.
jp6 xx.
jp7 xx.
jp8 xx.
jp9 xx.
jp10 xx.
NB xx indicates current jumpers
"." represents and empty pin
If anyone can help that would be fantastic

I tested once a very similar model. It was a HSP modem, which will not
work in Linux.
The COM3 you see in windows does not exist in fact - it's a virtual port
to go with the winmodem.

Sorry, I think you misunderstand me. What I wanted to say is that the
ES1370 driver does not support /dev/sndstat while other drivers do.
Of course the output of /dev/sndstat may slightly differ depending
on the version of the driver delivered with the kernel.

Don't know for sure about the 5000, but my 3000 is running _great_ here.
(Slackware, kernel 2.0.36)
According to <http://www.heise.de/newsticker/data/odi-26.01.99-001/>,
IBM Gemrany has certified the DLD Linux distrib on their Netfinity 7000
M10 (four 400-MHz Xeon processors and 2GB RAM)
And <http://www.zdnet.com/sr/stories/infopack/0,5483,2177559,00.html>
says that
"Additionally, IBM's Netfinity group is quietly providing service and
support for Linux on Netfinity servers on a case-by-case basis, company
officials confirm. An IBM Netfinity spokesman says IBM currently is
receiving 8 to 10 requests for Linux preloads per month."
Hope this helps!

I'm sorry this is not directly a reply to your mail, but I have a
counterquestion:
I have an AWE 32 PnP too, and I set up RH 5.2 too, and it just doesn't play
mp3 files. x11amp just freezes the computer after about 2 seconds of the
song. Could you give me a breif describition how you set up your card. I
tried the usual way with sndconfig (pnpdump) and even tried to modify the
isapnp.conf file to suit my needs. Now I'm about to recompile the kernel. I
dunno if that's even necessary. Did you have to install the AWE driver
extension and all that jack? I would really appreciate if you could just
gimme a hint (or a copy of crucial config files).. That would really make it
possible for me to completely switch to Linux...
Thanx a lot
