Date: Sun, 06 Jun 1999 18:09:49 -0500
Hi!
I downloaded the SB Live beta drivers from creative labs,
and DIDN'T run into problems with the module loading into
the kernel. However , my problems is as follows:
cat somesound.au >> /dev/audio gives me a "wobbling",
repeating sound
I tried to run an MP3 song and it's the same result, a very
odd effect. You can easily make out the song, but it seems to
be playing a little slower than it should do and with an
echo type of effect. The same sound gets played several times
and is mapped over the newer sounds from the tune.
I hate to describe sounds as it is IMHO very difficult :-)
I'm running RedHat 5.2, kernel 2.0.36, I think it is, ie
the one that is distributed on the RedHat CD, compiled
for 586 architecture.
Anyone know what this can be?
Thanks in advance!
/Henrik

I was quite happy with my ($20) adaptec 1542 ISA scsi card until I ran into
a rather odd problem. I seem to be hitting a limit of two devices!
I have
- a seagate dat, reliably available at /dev/st0
- a umax astra 1200S scanner, reliably available at /dev/scd0
- a ricoh cd-rw, moves around among /dev/sg*
the scanner is external, the other two internal. the scanner works fine if ONE
of the other two is connected. If I try to use all three, they get recognized
by linux on boot but the scanner will NOT work. in fact, scanimage -L will either
hang or coredump. wierd. Juggling the device numbers is no help at all, it just
moves around which device file linux ends up assigning it to. I have tried several
combinations of IDs to no avail. It just seems that the umax will not respond
properly if both the other devices are present.
I'm guessing this is a limitiation of the card, but the astra could just as well
be to blame. Any experience with this, pointers from those versed in scsi lore?
please respond via email unless of general interest...

Abit has announced a motherboard for dual socket 370 CPUs. BP6
Possibly for sale in July. Abit has a reputation for being "overclocker
friendly", so one could expect this board to be well equipped in that
regard.
www.abit.com.tw/
You can run dual Celerons in any dual slot 1 motherboard with a slocket
adapter (slot 2 as well with an adapter I suppose). The latest adapters
have voltage settings on the card. FSB can be changed via the BIOS on
most boards.
Then there is this (might need a special motherboard):
http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/pc/docs/article/990603/mb7.jpg
http://www.qdi.ca/release/release990604.htm
For single apps the best performance will be with the fastest single
processor you can afford (and a PIII 450 can be overclocked to a higher
speed than a 300A - usually). For multi-tasking a second processor
gives a significant advantage (Celeron/PIII/Xeon, whatever) - I suppose
you read the rest of the thread.

I find this entire discution facinating. Now heres my 2 cents. I know
its a little off subject but...
Has anybody else besides me seen the slocket that holds two PGA 370 type
processors into where a single slot celeron or PII processor would go on a
mobo. It comes from some company displaying it in Taiwan at the Computex
show that is going on as I write this. Now my question is whether or not
this actually works? There are some issues. The slot pinouts on the PCB
board. Then there is the BX chipset support limitation of a maximum of two
processors. I suppose there could be some type of creative software fix & MB
BIOS update code. Then again I'm assuming that the pictured mobo is of the
PII variety with the BX chipset. With that being said I would now have to
assume that the mobo is a GX motherboard with a Slot 2 interface.

Thanks to you and Daniele, I set the printer with YaST but it didn't work.
Today I found out the reason. I selected a Kernel with ppa in order to
suport a Zip drive and with kernel older than 2.2 it is impossible to share
a device with lp and ppa.
Thank you any way, I supose I shall to use my printer or my zip drive, but

Everything seems to write ok but no matter whether I issue:
mt -f /dev/nst0 fsf
mt -f /dev/nst0 fsf 1
or
mt -f /dev/nst0 fsf 2
followed by:

I *always* get sda7's files , never sda1's or sda6's . Even if I issue

Am I doing something wrong? thanks in advance for any ideas...

That's one of the more confusing error messages you'll get. It means
that xinit *itself* is calling *another* file, which is not present.
Try this command:
ldd /usr/X11R6/bin/xinit
which will tell you which libraries xinit wants, then see which one
doesn't exist.

Yep...it's made by the Hong Kong company that used to make Legend branded
computers for Sears. They also turn out electronic toys under the V Tech
Brand...I'm sure you've seen them at Toys-R_Us. They also do phones and all
kinds of electronics. They do all their circuit boards. It's a big outfit
with a decent reputation. Should be interesting to get these boards. Wonder
if you could put 4 celeys in a dual BX board <G>!!!!

I just bought a AGP Banshee and according to the docs NT will not support
AGP until v5 (as if I care anyway). I think you can use a AGP card in a PCI
slot though, the docs say to chose a open AGP or PCI slot to install the
card in. I could be wrong though.
