Isn't more easier use 'dd if=/dev/hdX of=/some/safe/palce/mbr.bin bs=512
count=1'?
To restore just change 'if' na 'of'. It will backup whole MBR including the
machine code.
Some disadvantage is, mistyping possibly leads to BIG troubles ;)

Partition table != MBR in most cases. Think "extended/logical
partitions", though your advice is good as a starting point....

I just added a second 3C905B-TX to my new computer. The existing card
suddenly became eth1 instead of eth0. What did I do about this? I
moved the cable to the new card!

I suspect that the location in the PCI bus has something to do with
how the cards get configured during powerup. As long as they are
consistent in their behavior, I don't really mind. I just have to
remember to plug the CAT5s into the right cards. I think I will
simply use an old technique known as labeling the NICs ;-).

I am planning to buy the above mentioned mainboard to use 2 350MHz PII I've

Then I heard some people had some problems with this board and the

Are there any recommendations which one to buy?

I have Turtle Beach Montego II sound card. (The model that came with my
Dell) I have been trying to install the drivers from the
linux.aureal.com website with no success.

I have been running 'make install' for some time now with various
configurations and I get 'unresolved symbol' errors quite a bit. yes I
did read the README file and I tried to recompile the kernel with sound
support builtin but then once I try to boot up with the new kernel, none
of the modules are loaded up. I get an error like this for many
different modules.

Aug 15 13:08:44 eyl depmod: depmod: *** Unresolved symbols in
/lib/modules/2.2.1
4-5.0/net/sis900.o

I also noticed when I tried to compile USB support into the kernel I had
the same problem with the modules. However the USB support did work.

Any ideas?

No. It proves that, whether you have PC133 or PC66 RAM, it's capable
of running at 133MHz well enough not to produce any immediate errors.

Viking and Kingston memory, I believe, have a sticker on each chip

The advantage of several partitions is also, that the inode density
can be varied.

To mention two extremes:
/usr may contain MB size files such as soffice (which I erased within
the 30 allotted days, I admit).
/var may contain thousands of 0.25 kB e-mails like these "Partition

All depending on your personeal needs of course.

Hi. I'm having a problem.

I have a new PC that came with an IDE hard drive and an IDE zip drive.
Everything seemed to be working normally. I added a second IDE hard
drive and suddenly the zip drive is misbehaving. It can't seem to read
any of my preexisting zip disks. And furthermore, it can't read a brand
new zip disk. If I look at such a disk with, say, the command
fdisk -l /dev/hdd,
it claims that the disk does not have a valid partition table.

Does anybody know what could cause such a change in behaviour? Needless
to say, neither Dell (the hardware manufacter) or RedHat can figure out
the problem.

Vital statistics:
Dell Precision 420
20gb Maxtor Hard Drive (IDE)
250gb Zip drive (IDE)
Redhat 6.2

The machine also has an IDE CD-ROM drive. I added a 3gb IDE hard drive.

Thanks for any help.

Hi All

I have a couple of Compaq servers here (a 6400 and an 8500) and I need
to put RedHat 6.1 or 6.2 on them. A normal installation does not seem to
see the Smart-2 array controller.

Does anyone have any experience installing Linux with these beasts? Is
it necessary to re-build the kernel to get support for this working?
What about RH 6.2..it has the 2.2.14-5.0smp kernel running. Is Smart-2
support included in that kernel?

I notice that the Compaq site has some patches for download that fix
some problems in the RH 6.1 distribution. Has anyone used them?

Any words of wisdom appreciated

That's my current theory, since it says in the source that that version
(0.22) supports rev7 and I, alas, have rev8.

Yes, that crossed my mind. I guess the reason I included it was that
someone in one of the many messages I have read on this subject seemed
to be saying that he was successful in using the 1370 driver even though
he had the 1371. Sounds very dubious, I know. And the syslog messages I
get make it clear that it is the 1371 driver that thinks it has found
its hardware.

I tried playing a CD (even though the previous random noise test
failed). It's just the standard GNOME CD player (which works fine on my
older computer) I just did a ps and I think it's "gtcd".

Yes, I bring up the audio mixer (gmix?) and play with the volume
controls and toggle the mute buttons. Deathly silence.

How would I check that? How about esd? I'm not sure what esd is or does,
but I remember reading somewhere that some MPEG player couldn't make
sound when esd was there. I guess I should try to figure out what this
esd thing actually is. It seems to have no man page.

Yes, I've tried all that. I get the 'device busy' messages mentioned there.
I need to initialize the game port on the 8240 chip, somehow! Just for

Have you tried just unplugging the telelphone cord from the modem? I had a
modem that did the same thing... turns out it was going bad, and about 3 months
of that, and it fried itself.

If unplugging the phone cord from the modem works, then you're looking at a
problem with your modem, maybe settings, maybe hardware, and probably not a
problem with the telco...

Well, for a Gravis Pro, I do:
  modprobe es1371 joystick=0x200
  modprobe joy-gravis
For the ES1371, joystick support is not enabled unless you pass the
module the joystick= parameter. Which module(s) do you use to drive
your sound card here? It might be worth your while to grep through the
source of those modules in /usr/src/linux/drivers/sound/ for references
to "joystick" and see if there's a magic sequence you need to pass, or
if your particular soundcard puts its joystick bits somewhere other than
0x200.
