Well, here I am , using Netscape and RH Linux to post my first newsgroup
message! Needless to say, I got the modem working. The last step was to remove
my Init String from the KPPP Modem setup and retype it exactly the same as it
was before.....TADA! It worked, YAHOO!

Hello Paul,
this sounds as if you are using an "always rewind" device.
I'm not so familiar with the linux device names, but from my experience on
IBM and HP machines I know that there is a rewindable and a non-rewindable
tape device.
So for all but the last write you have to use the non-rewindable device.
That should work.

I have a problem. Whenever I start X windows, it changes the owner and
the permissions of /dev/audio*, /dev/dsp*, and /dev/mixer*.
I run redhat 6.0.
Any ideas? I am getting really frustrated. I want to listen to the
freaking sound and not to waste hours messing with this nonsense. Thanks.

Comes this not from the fact that your two aliases point to the same
name, eg "ne". Try different aliases names and maybe this will work.

A "painless" way would be simply to change the bus frequency to 75mhz with
the jumpers on the motherboard. That should work without incident and get
you up to 375mhz.

Yes, I just installed Redhat 6.0 on my Gateway PC which has an ATAPI 32X
DVD-ROM drive. But I have heard that to actually access the DVD drive
from within Linux, you may a have to configure it to make it appear like
a CD-ROM drive. Does anyone have any idea how to configure ?

How:
Open a search engine. I suggest www.google.com. Type in "overclock Celeron

If you're running an ISA version of the card I just got mine going, its a bit
lengthy so if you'd like I can email you or post how I did it here.

Has anyone got the cs4232 sound to work on kernel 2.2.7? I'd love to see

parameters it comes up with are unacceptable to 2.2.7's modules.
Any help would be appreciated.

I think the problem is solved to add an argument
halt -p
in /etc/rc.d/init.d/halt if you use kernel 2.2.x.

If you'd be satisfied with 10 mbps ISA cards you can get 3C509s from
www.buy.com for less than $30. That's for the fancy shrink-wrapped
package too. They work great in Linux once you disable Plug-n-Play.
Unfortunately they ship with Plug-n-Play enabled, which is a pain in
either Linux or Windows NT. I'm told there is a way to disable
Plug-n-Play from Linux, but I used the supplied 3C5X9CFG.EXE
configuration program from MS-DOS to do that. (Actually there is a
bacth file on the configuration diskette, PNPDSABL.BAT, which calls
3C5X9CFG.EXE with command-line switches to disable PNP.) You also must
use 3C5X9CFG.EXE to set the I/O port and IRQ for this card; it has no
jumpers, alas.

Well, I have a umax scanner connected to device /dev/sgc, and I
invoke scanimage like this:
scanimage --device-name=umax:/dev/sgc --resolution 100 \
-l 0 -t 0 -x 50 -y 50 > test.ppm
in order to scan something 0 millimeters from the side (-l) 0 from the
top (-t) 50 mm wide (-x) and 50 mm long (-y) with a resolution of 100 dpi.
I could also create a symbolic link /dev/scanner to /dev/sgc and
dispense with the device name argument. I'd throw in a -mode Grey if
I wanted grayscale (and redirect it to test.pgm) or -mode Lineart for
pure black and white with no shades of gray (test.pbm). Did it come
with man pages? man scanimage, man sane-umax (or sane- whatever type of
scanner you have).
I don't know how you acquired sane but if you downloaded the source
tarball, did a configure, make, make install, under the build directory
tree's tools subdirectory is a useful little program called find-scanner
that you might want to try out.

Most things NT4-compatible will work with Linux.
Motherboards aren't going to make a big difference in my experience -- YMMV,
but I would buy the bottom-of-the-line board from a name-brand manufacturer
like ASUS. Definitely upgrade the RAM, otherwise you won't be taking full
advantage of the motherboard.
I would not buy an Intel CPU unless you intend to overclock -- otherwise buy
an AMD.
Hard disks manufacturer doesn't make much difference -- everyone releases
bad batches from time to time, and the noise you hear on Usenet about
manufacturer X doesn't mean much. Look for fast seek times first, then
buffers.
You don't mention video, which is very important. Look on the hardware
compatibility list for your chosen distribution. For cheap-but-good, I've
had good luck with STB.
Good luck!

I use an Aiwa NS20 drive. There are also several other manufacturers
that make NS20 drives.
The tapes hold 10gig uncompressed, 20gig compressed. It is quite fast --
60 MB/min uncompressed 120 MB/min compressed. I average about 80 MB/min.
The drive has built-in hardware compression. It also has a head
arrangement that allows it to read the data as it is written and do data
compares on the fly, eliminating the need for a second pass to verify
the data.
www.firstsource.com has it for $305.48 (internal SCSI)
I believe you can also get NS20 drives in IDE format.
