   Well, obviously you don't know, since my V3-3000 does a lovely job
of rendering in a window. Please don't post when you don't know
what you're talking about.

   There is a perfectly fine Voodoo-capable X-Server available - I'm using
it even as we speak. The OpenGL drivers are doing a fine job of running
my Mesa apps and q3test. Little did I know that I'm using something
that doesn't exist.

possible?

I'm building a dual-processor workstation on which I'll dual-boot NT and
some form of Linux, at least until I'm comfortable enough with Linux to dump
NT. What I'm looking for is a multi-channel(U2W-LVD) RAID controller that
will support both NT and Linux. It seems that ICP-Vortex has an excellent
line of controllers that would work perfectly with Linux, except that they
are about twice as expensive as Adaptec's. Mylex seems to also have a good
piece of equipment in their ExtremeRAID offering, again much more expensive
than Adaptec's. Since I'm not going to be concerned with data security, I
probably don't need an extremely powerful RISC processor doing parity
calculations, just independent channels and the ability to stripe volumes in
hardware. Does anybody know if there is the possibility of driver support
coming eventually from Adaptec? They specifically state that they only
support the major commercial[expensive :( ] versions of Unix. Are there any
other high performance multi-channel U2W RAID controllers that are supported
by Linux and that are affordable? Thanks for the help.

Just a less-than-.02-thought:

There is this "Linux-fan oriented" keyboard with a lot of positive
reviews which appeared earlier in this newsgroup..

I was thinking for a while about those nice Kinesis keyboards, but
they seem too expensive (I do not type that much to make a $200
investment, but do email me if you know where to get one for under
$100)... Paying around $60 for a keyboard which looks more like that
of a notebook and is worthless since it is not going to change the
position of hands (and which is just SMALLER!!) definitely seems
excessive.
There is nothing wrong with having extra keys on a keyboard, and one
could even use them properly; I know there are quite a few folks who
already adjusted their keyboards... So I made a few changes myself;
I am posting them just in case someone might want to do something
similar, or instead tell me a few more hints..

Changes to the keypad:

===== ===== ===== ===== NumLock is not changed (what is it??)
|NUM| | / | | * | | # |  For making even more detalied comments...
===== ===== ===== =====  (/, * are the standard convention)
===== ===== ===== =====
| ) | | ( | | $ | |   |  For $()-things and ^() things (Makefile, Maple)
===== ===== ===== | ^ |
===== ===== ===== |   |
| } | | { | | $ | |   |  For ${}-things (sh) and ^{}, _{} (TeX)
===== ===== ===== =====  (there is an underscore under "^")
===== ===== ===== |   |

=========== ===== |   |
=========== ===== | _ |
|   ???   | |???| |   |
=========== ===== =====

The abnormal order of all brackets simplifies typing; the choice of
lines for (), {}, <> is suggested by their original positions

What would be good for those three ??? keys? []?..

Best,
a.

P.S. For people like myself: there are many ways to make this work,
here is one: create the file .xmodmap.keypad like below:

keycode 112 = slash
keycode  63 = asterisk
keycode  82 = numbersign

keycode  79 = parenright
keycode  80 = parenleft
keycode  81 = dollar

keycode  83 = braceright
keycode  84 = braceleft
keycode  85 = dollar
keycode  86 = asciicircum

keycode  87 = greater
keycode  88 = less
keycode  89 = question

keycode  90 = question
keycode  91 = question

keycode 108 = underscore

and say xmodmap .xmodmap.keypard
or add
if [ "$DISPLAY" == ":0.0" ]; then xmodmap .xmodmap.keypad; fi
to your .bashrc
Or maybe just xmodmap .xmodmap.keypad to your .xinitrc...

To get the keycode<->key correspondence, start xev and press
the keys...

Hi, after I boot I don't see "lp1 at 0x0378" in my /var/log/message.
I do see it after I do for example "ls >/dev/lp1". Moreover, "cat
/proc/devices" doesn't show "6 lp", nor does lsmod show lp module.
Does it mean I have to install my printer? If yes, how? I don't see this
info in Printing-HOWTO. I know my HP697C does print from Linux with
 cdj550 because I already printed *.ps files after using printtool
and setting everything there - I thought it was installing a printer,
apperantly I was wrong or not? Please help me understand. (tunelp is
not available in my RH5.1).
Thanks.

hrmm.....I got it working, though I'm not shure how...but I shall do
my best to describe it.

I started to install the ALSA Drivers (http://www.alsa-project.org) I
compiled and installed the drivers, libs, and utils and then ran
snddevices (as per the Alsa-sound-mini-HOWTO-4.html). Then I tried to
run modprobe to install the proper driver...it didn't work...I then
ran sndconf and it detected the proper sound card and then everything
worked, though I still had to tweak the sound levels using aumix.

Hope this helps anyone else out there that has the same problem

Has anybody managed to get IDE ORB drive (www.castlewood.com) to work
under Solaris X86? I have managed to get solaris to recognise the drive
although it does get upset about the drive taking too long to respond
to some commands. I can also make a filesystem and copy a few files to
the disk however I usually end up with a reboot after a couple of hundred
MBs are copied to the disk.

I am also having trouble with freebsd and the disk going idle and then
freebsd timing out (on the install to it.) Anybody managed to get linux
installed on one either for that matter?

Subject: Re: Multi-Channel RAID Controller for Linux

Striping (RAID0) is a trade off of performance over data integrity given
that failure of any stripe set member results in complete and
unrecoverable data loss. Both linux and NT do software raid and
striping at practically no cost compaired to hardware RAID controllers.

All that is required for nearly 2x performance increase gain from the
existing controllers is to form stripe pairs (or triplets) off different
controller channels.

Am I missing something?

Check the /etc/rc.d/init.d/network script (which I think is symlinked to
/etc/pcmcia). cardmgr is trying to bring up eth0 but passing a wrong (or doesn't
pass at all) device name to ifup and that why you were getting + usage: ifup
<device name> error. Get the latest pcmcia-cs-3.0.12 from sunsite.unc.edu.

Subject: Mouse Problems
Date: Mon, 14 Jun 1999 05:43:49 GMT

I am really hoping someone can help me out with this one, becuase I am at my
wits end.

I have a Celeron 300A (running @ ~378) w. Abit BH6 MB, and I use a Logitech
Firstmouse+ serial on COM1. This was all working fine, until I removed my
modem. Suddenly, mouse no longer works in Linux. I have a Win98/RH5.2 dual
boot, and the mouse has no problems under Windows.

Does anyone have any idea what may be causing this? I tried everything I
could think of, from changing the com-port settings in the BIOS, to trying
all available mice I can get my hands on, and with all serial mice, I get
the same problem, the mouse cursor slowly moves to the bottom of the screen
and stays there. When I run X with the "correct" com port, it has no
problems (ie. it doesn't give any mouse errors) but the mouse does not work.

PLEASE! Somebody must have an idea for this. I have tried everything I could
think of and the mice I tried are as follows:

Logitech
    FirstMouse Serial
    FirstMouse PS/2
    FirstMouse+ Serial
    FirstMouse+ PS/2
    Mouseman Serial
Microsoft Mouse PS/2
IBM Mouse PS/2

All of the serial mice just fall to the bottom of the screen, and the PS/2
mice just jump around the screen randomly.

I had a LT firstmouse working, so I know that it must somehow work, and all
of the above mice work fine under Windows, so I assume it's not a hardware
defect or improper BIOS setting.

I need the mouse to work though if I am to use Linux. Please! if someone
knows what is causing this, please email me [EMAIL PROTECTED]

thanks.

I apologize for the repost, but I lost all of the previous replys.

Iomega ZIP (ATAPI)
USR 56K modem (ISA, not winmodem)
Windows NT 4.0/SP5

This box is ok, but I am thinking about upgrading my MoBo, CPU, RAM
and adding a 2nd Harddrive and adding Linux Mandrake 6.0 in a
dual-boot config. I have a few questions and would love some
feedback.  Here goes:

1) What do you think of ASUS, ABIT, and INTEL motherboards?
Specifically, is one brand better than another for LINUX and/or dual
boot situations? If so, which model motherboard from that brand?

2) Should I go with a PII 350 MHz or 400 MHz or one of the newer
Celerons? Also, why do you recommend this? Are there HUGE
performance gains/hits with differing configurations?

3) Lastly, from personal experience, who do you think makes the best
IDE harddrives? I only ask because I have heard bad things about
Maxtor and thought I might try something new.

I greatly appreciate your feedback on this. Take care and have a
great week!!!

 Hey! What about getting a few people together and finding out the exact
effect
 of (128k*full-Speed*60MHz) vs (128k*full-Speed*100MHz) vs
(512k*half-Speed*66MHz) vs (512k*half-Speed*100MHz) vs maybe
(1M*full-Speed*100MHz(Xeon))
 and while we're doing it test agains some K6-(I/II/III)?

 Then at least we had some comparable numbers to talk about and
everybody would
 be ably to decide objectively what to chose for his(/her) money/primary
work-type.

 I'd suggest:

 kernel-compile(much IO,much computatioin,small data-chunks)    - same
clean kernel, same compiler
 NFS           (much IO,little computation,big data-chunks)     - data
on cache/disk/memory-disk
 some Fractals (small data, heavy computation,small-chunks)
 Gimp (little IO, medium computation,big-data) -
different image-sizes, may use gausian blur
 mpeg-encoding (medium IO, heavy computation,big-data)          - same
data-set, same encoder, same version/compiler/options
 mp3-decoding (little IO, "heavy" computation, medium data) - same
data, a few thousand times, messure cpu-time (includes memory-transfers,
cache-misses,...)
 MESA (nearly no IO,heavy computation, medium data)

 And I'd suggest to key it for:

 * FSB (66/76/83/100/107/...)
 * Internal Speed(I suggest all non-Celeron to be tested at
smaller-speeds too to have a better
   comparison to other mashines or at least a better way to calculate
then to equal ground)
 * Memory size (for NFS/Gimp/... this could make a difference)
 * HDD/Controller (may make a difference in IO-bound actions(NFS with
empty cache))

 I'm running a dual PII-266 at 66MHz FSB to run single and
dual-processor Benchmarks on
 and may run sth. on a 66MHz Cel300 (should be nearly comparable in
render-power)
 which I may switch to 100MHz for some time (not mine). And there is a
350MHz/100MHz K6-III.

 If someone is interested to agree on a benchmark-set/run on his(/her)
mashine -> mail me

 If not I'll do some benchmarks of my own and post them to settle some
of this noise.

Sounds interesting...How about the integrated NetFlex Card?

Would you like to help me out with a few hints? I've installed a
separate SCSI-card to use for the CD. I will settle for RH5.2. In what
way do I help the installation (parameters, modules) to detect the RAID
under EIDE?? (and the net-card if possible...)
