Version 2.2.9 of the kernel does not have supportt for the ALI 15xx IDE
chipset that you have (me too). It has been integrated into the test
2.3.x series, where x is some number I can't remember, something like 2
or 3. Anyway that did it for me. hdparm tells me that DMA is on for
both the HD and the CDROM and timings are quite good. Good luck.

Support for this card is built into any recent kernel... just enable
support in your kernel and recompile...
An alternative (with much better sound quality) is alsa... check it out

That is why the committee is restricted to approving or rejecting
changes. It is not allowed to initiate anything. It will probably be
slow and irrational, but that shouldn't matter, as there is nothing to
stop people using the extensions to the interfaces if they are any good.
The original design will be done by one small company - possibly one
person at first. He will provide as comprehensive a set of interfaces as
he possibly can, but the implementations will be limited. Many of the
interfaces will be stubbed out, waiting for a third party to fill them
in.
Glad to see that this thread still has some life in it.

I have installed ALSA sound drivers for my sb128 PCI cound card. It works
great except for MIDI. When I try playmidi, it tells me `can't open
/dev/sequencer`.
Does anybody know how to get this work ?

If it works under DOS then it works under Linux. What is wrong with
using isapnptools? I do not have Viking but have in one machine another
ISA PNP internal modem (Supra) with no override jumpers. It works for
data and fax just fine. A total no-brainer once you bothered to peek
into documentation.
I cannot force that modem to behave with respect to its voice
capabilities, but this is another story. It will record an incoming
message but that is about it. It does not seem even to be able to
notice in a voice mode that another party terminated a connection.

I have suich a mouse (3 buttons, with tail). Bus since are not serial
mice so /dev/ttyS1 is your problem. You need a kernel with bus mouse
support (modarised or compiled in). I have not got a system in front
of me to refer to but I think the right device is /dev/psaux (MAKEDEV
should knows the right numbers if you do not have it---I personally
use a kernel with the devfs patch applied).
My kernel only supports the sort of bus mouse I actualy have and I
compiled it in because I always want it anyway. I believe logitech
actually helped getting all there stuff supported on Linux.

I have a second parallel port (separate card). The printer connects to
this card, and the IOmega parallel port version to the first card. The
printer is configured for lp0 (using YAST from SUSE) and works. Both, lp
and ppa, are modules.
But the ppa module still reports a busy device. So, how can I tell it to
use the other port?
I could not even get it to work, when I removed the lp module (plus the
parport_probe, parport_pc and parport). Funny thing is, that I was able
to use that configuration with Suse 6.0. Now I have installed 6.1 (new
install).

Subject: Re: ASUS Motherboard problem
It's not that the kernel refuses to see the device, but that it sees the
device and doesn't understand it. There is a Unified UDMA Driver patch
at http://www.dyer.vanderbilt.edu/server/udma/ which you can apply to
kernel 2.2.9 to make it take advantage of the UDMA capabilities of the
ALI 1543 chipset on your P5A-B. Just patch the kernel source and
configure your kernel with Default Multimode On and Ali 15x3 Support
On. It worked for me; I get about 13mb/sec in hdparm -t on a P5A-B with
AMD K6-2/350 and a Western Digital 6.4GB UDMA drive.
Hope this helps

Subject: Exabyte EXB-4200
Date: 14 Jun 1999 07:23:50 GMT
Hi,
I have acquired an Exabyte EXB-4200 4mm DDS-1 DAT drive. I have seen this exact
same drive working on another machine, where I had installed it under OS/2
using GNU tar for OS/2 without any single problem whatsoever. When I bought the
drive from the owner of the OS/2 machine, it was working perfectly.
However, I cannot get it working properly on Linux using an on-board SCSI
controller (ait777xxx driver or something very close to this). My disks and
CDROM hang off the same controller and work 100% okay. The drive is recognized
correctly and reacts to all commands, mt status, mt rewind, everything. But
tar operations to /dev/st0 or /dev/nst0 have a 90% chance of failure.
Writing usually starts fine, but as soon as the buffer is full and the tape
starts spinning, the whole circus blows up and after endless waiting, tar comes
back with an IO error. Reading of a previously written tape has worked once,
but is extremely unreliable. Sometimes it starts fine but hangs half way.
I suppose the drive is fine and there's something screwed up in my setup
somewhere. But the SCSI chain works correctly.
Where to start?

First, go with supermicro boards. I have had problems up the yingyang
regarding the asus boards. Besides, they are used by linuxonline(can't
beat that!)
The processor is a personal preference. If you are going to kill the
processors, spend the money on the good ones!
I use Western Ditigal Drives for all my IDE needs. Only had one
problem, and WD replaced the drive quickly!(didn't help that I droped
the drive ;) )
Hope that this all helps!

Hi. (I'm under Linux SuSE 6.0 (kernel 2.0.36))
I'm developping a driver for industrial PCI card. Each card have 2Ko of
memory.
The first card has an adress: 0xFF000000
The second has an adress: 0xFF000800
My problem is that vremap can't maps the second memory.
vremap use this define:
PAGE_SHIFT = 12
PAGE_SIZE = 1 << PAGE_SHIFT #0x00001000
PAGE_MASK = ~(PAGE_SIZE-1) #0xFFFFF000
~PAGE_MASK= #0x00000FFF
This is the minimum of page size
Error provide in the second card with the test: if (adress &
~(PAGE_MASK)) return NULL
with adress is the physical adress.
For the first card: 0xFF000000 & 0x00000FFF => return virtual
adress
For the sedond card: 0xFF000800 & 0x00000FFF => return NULL
How can I resolve this error ?
Can I reduce the page size ?
Or, must I use other function than vremap ???
Thanks for your help.

I agree. It supports DAT and other things like Travan cartridge drives.
Really easy to setup and get going. Excellent tape management, etc.
Then again occasionally I kick myself for not getting a CD-R burner,
since that have many other fun uses.
How much of the drive in changing data?
Given that a restore from a mega crash will probably require a
re-install on linux. How much data files do you want to backup?
Remember you can now get CD-RW burner (ie. read/write multiple times).
