That's not correct. There are many other choices which consome just a
small fraction of the power you need for for any x86 based systems.
Embedded PowerPC and (Strong)ARM comes to mind.
Can you show us an x86 based web server running from a 9V battery?
See http://www.denx.de/embedded-ppc-en.html for an example of a
PowerPC web based web server demo smaller than a floppy disk -

Hi,
I just installed sound on my TI TravelMate 513TE, RH 6.1, kernel 2.2.12.
I used sndcnfig, and it worked properly.
However, the volume of the demo it played was really low...
I played a CD from KDE, but it is the same. All the "knobs" I can use to
control the voulme are at their maximum, but I still can hardly listen
to the music.
With w98, I have to keep the level at 30%, to not break my ears.
So, I think HW is OK.
Do you have any solution ?
Thanx in advance

Well, if you want to get all complicated about it, Sure... go with a
proprietary system, such as ARM or EPPC..
If price and complexity are not an issue, go for it! I'm all for
technological advance.... Of course, the power supply to step 120VAC
down to 9V so you can run that ARM or EPPC is going to use some
power...
And I assume reliability is an issue,as well. I sure wouldn't want
to have to swap out 9V batteries every couple of hours/days (in order
to save power) and have my router go down when I'm not paying
attention to its battery's charge..
::shrug::
Sheesh, offer a simple, upgradeable, easily obtainable potential
solution to a problem, get your head bit off.
Guess I won't be posting any more..
I'll just go on running my 9 machines at the house, which only costs
me $5 a month more than not running any, and wonder where all the
savings went.

This should really be a FAQ.
If /dev/sda* is not a valid block device then some of your modules
aren't loaded or initialised correctly.
> alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
> alias scsi_hostadapter ppa
The scsi_hostadapter module is loaded if and only if the scsi-core
module is also loaded, so it's not the most reliable way of loading the
ppa module. Try doing this instead (Linux 2.2+, not 2.4):
# ZIP 100 support (parallel port)
pre-install sd_mod modprobe -k ppa
This means that if ever Linux needs to load the SCSI disk module
(sd_mod) then it will make sure that ppa is loaded first. sd_mod will
preload scsi-core automatically, and ppa will drag in the parallel port
modules. These are the ONLY modules you need - lp is for the printer and
nothing else. You might also need to add a line like this for your
parallel port modules:
options parport_pc irq=7 io=0x378
This is correct for my system: one parallel port on IRQ 7 and at IO
address 0x378. This is probably true for you too unless you have
installed a second port via an expansion card.
For reference: this is EXACTLY what I do to use my ZIP drive - neither
more nor less. I have no explicit "modprobe" commands in rc.local; Linux
correctly identifies which modules need loading on demand, and can
unload them when they are no longer being used.

Date: Mon, 28 Aug 2000 07:41:25 -0400
Hi,
I just buy a new system.. And I install Linux on it
(distribution Gentus (RedHat 6.2)).
My system:
CPU: AMD 800MHz
Motherboard: ABIT KA7-100
RAM: 128M
HD: Matrox 20G, ATA-100
Partitions (created with Partition Magic 4):
7G: Fat32 with Win98 Second Edition Primary
Extended
2G: Fat32
Logical
9G: Linux ext2 mount as "/" Logical
2G: Linux ext2 mount as "/home" Logical
257M: Linux Swap
Logical
Graphic Card: Matrox G400 Max
CDRW: Plextor 12x/10x/32x
DVD: PC-DVD Encore 12x with Dxr3 (Creative Labs)
My problem:
Under Win98, in Explorer Windows, I have two more visible CDROMs, that I
should not see.
Before the installation:
Visible under Win98:
C:\ -> Win98 7G
D:\ -> Fat32 2G
E:\ -> Fat32 will be "/" under Linux 9G
F:\ -> Fat32 will be "/home" under Linux 2G
G:\ -> Fat32 will be "swap" under Linux 257M
H:\ -> CDRW Plextor 12x/10x/32x
I:\ -> DVD
After the installation:
Visible under Win98:
C:\ -> Win98 7G
D:\ -> Fat32 2G
E:\ -> New CDROM
F:\ -> New CDROM
H:\ -> CDRW Plextor 12x/10x/32x
I:\ -> DVD
This problem makes my system very unstable when I try to get access to
my real CDROM (CDRW;DVD) and this is not interesting to see.
On my old system, I had this problem and I solve it by putting my swap
partition the last one of my disk. This seems to do not work on this
system.
So if you have a idea how to solve my problem without playing at erasing
and installing Linux/Win98 multiple times (by tries and errors).
I know that this question should have been already asked somewhere...
but I did not find any traces of it.
Thank you very much ! Have a nice day !

I just buy this cdrw too. The new version of cdrecord

Good luck !

OK first off sorry for a very newbie questions, and for the cross-posting...
1) Where are FAQ's for these groups available from?
2) How easy is it to set up a Linux-Windows network? I wish to purchase two
cheap (9-15) network cards from Watford Electronics or another UK
supplier, along with a cheap 4 port hub (2 ports for future uses) and
cabling. Can anybody please advise me as to which cheaper cards can be used
with (Corel) Linux as well as windows NT/98. Basically I want to get the
Win98 machine to talk to the Apache Web Server running under Linux, over the
network.
[If you would like to know why the hell I would want to do the above, please

Also, before I start trawling around the internet (which I will in 5 mins or
so) can anybody advise me as to drivers for a 16mb Voodoo banshee (only
recognised as a SVGA card and so has headache inducing refresh rates and
terrible
screen glitches) and/or drivers for a SoundBlaster 64 (not
installed/recognised at
all, and not amazingly important but would be nice...)
Once again thanks (and sorry..!)

Date: Mon, 28 Aug 2000 14:07:40 +0000
Hi,
Hope this is not too OT but there's probably more chance of someone here
knowing the answer!
To get my etherlink III 3c509B Combo working in linux I disabled the PnP
and manually set the IRQ and I/O with the 3c5x9cfg.exe program in
windows.
This works fine in linux, using isapnptools.
However I just can't get it to work in Windows.
If I use the ISA mode driver, I am allowed to specify I/O port only and
no IRQ.
If I use the EISA mode driver Control Panel->System->Device
Manager->Network Adaptors->Properties says that the driver could not be
loaded, and hence I don't get to specify IRQ & IO at all.
Has anyone had/resolved this problem before?
I went to the 3com site but the blurb on the driver download page states
that 3c509 is only supported in 'classic' (???) and PnP modes, not ISA
and EISA.
Alternatively............
Seeing as windows can see the NIC in PnP mode fine, can I get linux to
load it?
Currently if I set the card in PnP mode, linux hangs when I try to start
the eth0 interface.
The card is being loaded in /etc/conf.modules with
alias eth0 3c509
Does anyone know why it hangs and whatI could do about it?
Kind regards,
Dave

should work for corel as well.

Hi folks,
I'm having trouble setting the density code of my Sony SDT-7000

I'm using RedHat 6.2, Adaptec 2940U in a SCSI-only Pentium system.
Access to the tape works fine, but what makes me nervous is that mt

the Sony Tape is capable of.
After inserting any DDS2 tape (from various manufacturers) and setting
both mt defdensity 0x24 and mt setdensity 0x24 to DDS2 I still only get
DDS density:

You don't need the ISAPNP-Tools if you haven't enabled PnP Support on
the 3Com-Card...

The IRQ can be read from the card when you provide the IO-Address.

Because EISA allowes auto-detection of the cards and their settings
without conflicts. you don't want to use the EISA-Mode of the 3C509 if
you don't have an EISA-Mainboard.

classic = ISA
for the EISA-Mode you can get the drivers for the 3C579 which is the
native EISA-Version of the 509.

Good morning. I am porting the es1371 driver to the IBM405gp using

I can seem to play sounds OK, but I am only recording Silence. When I
look at the files
I see only 0x7f's and 0x80's in the file.
Is there anything special I have to do other than turn the volume up an

I am using the command

The 405gp does not have hardware cache coherency, so I have put in the
software equivalent.
Does anybody have any idea's?

I once had this problem. I can't remember how I solved it, though. It
was most certainly the driver for Windows that had to be a particular
one (one of those ISA/EISA/PnP-Mode drivers).
I'll tell you what: I'll go drop my 3c509 back into my Linux/Win98 box
tonight (I was going to do it anyway), and I'll come back and let you
know how it went...unless someone else out there has an answer before I
can get to it....
