I don't see where it detects two CDROM's. I only see /dev/hdd identified
as ATAPI cdrom. The first 'hdd: ...' seems to be the identifier string
form the cdrom itself and the second 'hdd: ...' string is what linux is
thinking what kind of device it is.

You don't need it. Check out my GPL'd stream based archiving utility

http://w3.one.net/~bilshell/backburner/backburner.html

You can also find it on freshmeat. If you go to the web page, you can
see a sample scenario with detailed usage instructions on how to do
exactly what you want to do (via the Unix dd command). You can back the
thing up to CDRW, Zip disks, ftp site, other hard drive, or for the
truly dense I even support floppies.

You can do all this with the native unix tools, my software just helps a
little bit if you want compression, verification, or want to span media.

Hi Bill,

I guess you forgot to compile the SCSI-tape-drive module (st.o)
for your device (resp. to first answer "M" to "Support for SCSI tapes"
in kernel configuration -> SCSI devices).
It doesn't make sense (and probably won't work) to compile the tape
drive code in with the Hostadapter as a module.
It should be no problem to load and unload the 'st'-module after loading
of your HA module, once your new kernel is built (and you've booted with
it, of course :-).
Moreover, it shouldn't matter if your drive is Travan, DAT (like mine)
or DLT or whatever technology; but I'm not 100% sure about that.
Please, take a look at the SCSI-HOWTO, and also at 'drivers/scsi/st.c'
for that question.

So long (BTW : Sorry for answering that late :-( )

Hi,
i have tried for a long time to install Linux on an very old IBM L40SX
Laptop with
4 MB RAM and an 65MB harddisk. I tried many different distributions from
SuSE to some smaller distributions (Dragon Linux, Small Linux ...) but no
success. The Laptop crashed every time after first reboot. Sometimes it
crashes with Kernel Panik after booting from the install-disk with the
messages that no scsi disk is found or so.

Everybody has installed Linux on this Laptop and can help me?

Im a poor student an have no money to buy an "real" computer so i thought
it might be possible to install a small Linux only for writing on this
Laptop.

Thanks in advance,

and then it worked. (Well sort of, also had to get sox downloaded in order

Hi,

I would disagree to Daniele, as I recently bought an Epson 740 and
got it to work only at 360x360 dpi (at first), whis is a bit
disappointing compared to the quality under Wintendo. But I _had_
made sure there is linux support before (like I do for _every_
piece of hardware, of course ;-).
Later I realized there is better resolution available through
the 'upp' ghostscript drivers, but again I'm limited to less than
M$ 'cause the '600 and '800 files for 1440x720 didn't work,
and I don't understand these yet to write my own :-(.
My opinion is, that you can choose between far more (ghostscript) device
drivers for HP printers (if you're careful not to buy the GDI '7xxs !)
than for Epsons; what about higher quality, if you can't use it ?

Unfortunately, this is a limitation of the PC hardware

much about.

I can't speak for win98, but I did put lilo on my win95 OSR2 FAT32
system, and it all works fine. Microsoft will of course wipe lilo
whenever installing windows, but you just put it back and the two
happily coexist (linux because it is friendly, windows because it does
not have a clue).

So, if it does not work, it was a win98 thing, not a FAT32 thing.

I have a pc with a built-in NIC as well - and the PCNet32 ethernet driver
worked - of course I cheated and looked around at the motherboard for
probable culprit chips - and sure enough there was one of them labeled
"PCNET".

I configured the PCNET support as a module, and when I did the INSMOD
pcnet32 command, [if I remember correctly...] the next time I did
"ifconfig -a" there was my eth0 - big as life and waiting for some config
stuff.

Good Luck - and if you get tired of trying, ISA NIC's can be gotten for less
than 20 bucks at lots of places....

Hi, If you can answer any of these questions, please do so. Thanks a
lot! Sorry if it's a lot. I have HPdj 697C, GS version 5.50,
printtool-3.29-3, printfilters-1.46-3, RH5.1

1) in the printtool I can have only 300x300 resolution with cdj550
filter. Is it possible to have 600dpi as my printer's spec supposedly
have for black&white? (I was told providing -r600x600 in gs command when
printing doesn't really do it!?)

2) what is the difference between cdj670 and cdj550 and why cdj670 is
not available with this latest (?)5.50 distribution of gs?

3) does having higher resolution mean spending more ink? if yes, than
is it 4 times more ink for 600x600 than for 300x300 resolutions?

4) at school on Unix I have in my .cshrc file:
alias lpe0 "/usr/local/bin/enscript -2r -fCourier8 -L58 -h -G -g
-pscriptfile.ps \!:1"
alias lpe "/usr/local/bin/enscript -fCourier8 -L75 -h -G -g
-pscriptfile.ps \!:1"
that help me to transfer _plain_ text to ps format with some convinient
details. Is anything like that available in Linux for plain text?
(printtool doesn't do it for the plain text.)

5) What is CMY? CMY+K? CMYK?
Thanks! (in your reply add a copy to my [EMAIL PROTECTED], please if you
can.)

You need to turn off the "virtual resolution" in the /etc/XF86Config file, I
think...

I think it's just a case of commenting the line out with a '#'.

If you're having troubles with the actual screen resolutions and sizes,
rather than the virtual ones, xvidtune is an interactive method of
collecting all the correct settings for X.

(It prints them to stdout, so you can redirect to a file and insert that
file into the /etc/XF86Config. (replacing the old settings))

I've got RH6.0 Linux, kernel v. 2.2.9 on 486-33MHz EISA board.
It works as X-Terminal.

NIC starts as a module
3c507.c:v1.10 9/23/94 <cut>
eth0: 3c507 at 0x300, <cut>, IRQ 10, external xcvr, memory
0xd0000-0xd3fff.

and after some time (randomly) produces:

eth0: Rx unit stopped, status 5220, restarting.
eth0: Command unit stopped, status a000, restarting.
eth0: Rx unit stopped, status a000, restarting.
eth0: Rx unit stopped, status d220, restarting.

1. Is it a latest driver??
2. Is it a hardware problem? Works in DOS+Netware ;-).
3. Is it a RH6.0 problem? It worked with RH5.2! It is, now compiled
with egcs-2.91.66.
4. On cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov there is no info on 3c507.
