It really sounds like he is trying to use a higher refresh rate than the
monitor is able to handle and selecting a simple generic type monitor
would be a safe bet. However, the best would be if he could look up the
horizontal and vertical sync ranges in the manual to make full use of
his monitor.

I've got a tekram card working with a Slackware machine, and I think it
is a 390F. I don't remember if I'm using the NCR53c7,8xx driver or the
NCR53C8XX driver. I think that I tried one of them first and when that
failed I tried the other one which worked fine.

I didn't install slackware using this card, I probably used bare.i or
net.i but I hope you will get a hint on what the name of the boot image
could be from this message anyway.

I would guess that the tekram.s is the driver form the DC-390(T) card
which uses an AM53C974A chip.

Hope this helps.

Assuming you're using pilot-xfer, you just have to tell it you're on
/dev/ttyS0. You can either do this explicitly on the command line, or

ln -s /dev/ttyS0 /dev/pilot

Check your news feed -- you aren't getting everything. Variations on
this question seem to be asked roughly every two weeks, and (in
amongst the jokes) somebody always responds with

1) lilo -u
2) fdisk /mbr
3) partition magic

The file you want is named (alternately) XFCom-i740-glibc-1.1.0-1.i386 located here:
ftp://ftp.precisioninsight.com/pub/pi/XFCom/XFCom-i740-glibc-1.1.0-1.i386.rpm also
get:
 ftp://ftp.precisioninsight.com/pub/pi/XFCom/xf86config-glibc-1.1.0.i386.tgz

or (the slightly older) XBF-i740-glibc-1.0.0-1.i386 located here:
 ftp://ftp.sunet.se/pub/X11/XBF/XBF-i740-glibc-1.0.0-1.i386.rpm also get:
 ftp://ftp.sunet.se/pub/X11/XBF/xf86config-glibc-1.0.0.i386.tgz

Follow the instructions after decompressing the .tgz file. The .rpm file should
install correctly. I am using the XBF version right now. Red Hat 6.0 is glibc, like
5.x. I had marginal success with the "automatic" XF86Config created, and had to
hand-edit some modelines.

Hi,

Does anyone know if there is support for this in the kernel? If so then
which adaptec module can I use? If not then is there a patch?

I have RedHat 6.0 so therefore kernel 2.2.5-22.

Many thanks for any help.

Subject: mouse problems
Date: Tue, 15 Jun 1999 00:42:59 GMT

I am really hoping someone can help me out with this one, becuase I am at my
wits end.

I have a Celeron 300A (running @ ~378) w. Abit BH6 MB, and I use a Logitech
Firstmouse+ serial on COM1. This was all working fine, until I removed my
modem. Suddenly, mouse no longer works in Linux. I have a Win98/RH5.2 dual
boot, and the mouse has no problems under Windows.

Does anyone have any idea what may be causing this? I tried everything I
could think of, from changing the com-port settings in the BIOS, to trying
all available mice I can get my hands on, and with all serial mice, I get
the same problem, the mouse cursor slowly moves to the bottom of the screen
and stays there. When I run X with the "correct" com port, it has no
problems (ie. it doesn't give any mouse errors) but the mouse does not work.

PLEASE! Somebody must have an idea for this. I have tried everything I could
think of and the mice I tried are as follows:

Logitech
    FirstMouse Serial
    FirstMouse PS/2
    FirstMouse+ Serial
    FirstMouse+ PS/2
    Mouseman Serial
Microsoft Mouse PS/2
IBM Mouse PS/2

All of the serial mice just fall to the bottom of the screen, and the PS/2
mice just jump around the screen randomly.

I had a LT firstmouse working, so I know that it must somehow work, and all
of the above mice work fine under Windows, so I assume it's not a hardware
defect or improper BIOS setting.

I need the mouse to work though if I am to use Linux. Please! if someone
knows what is causing this, please email me [EMAIL PROTECTED]

thanks.

you'll only see improvements, if each disk is connected to another ide
channel (e.g. hda and hdc). You should enable DMA (if you can). This
will improve swapping behavior more significantly than md's does.
Combining the two will obviously yield the best results.

I am looking for a good backup solution for my new Linux box. I'd
prefer some sort of tape backup. If someone could suggest a good tape

I've checked the Hardware Compatibility howto, various Linux resources

is not SCSI and reasonably priced, < $500.

If anyone can suggest drives to look at or drives to avoid I'd

I would say this is not a pcmcia problem, its a problem with the way
interface eth0 was configured. Run netcfg and check the settings there.

Did you ever try a restore of a multivolume backup made with GNU tar? It seems
to be difficult synchronizing at EOT when you're restoring from
DDS2 with hardware compression enabled. This also applies to other software
that is able to do multivolume backups.

Another problem is that GNU tar is buggy wrt handling of sparse files (option
'S').

OK, I want to use dump and rdump to back up to a Conner CTT8000-S tape

blocksize is 512bytes(?) but can't figure out what to set for the other
values. Is there a repository or FAQ some where where I can find this
info? Thanks in advance.

Sorry to crosspost again. THANKS! to everyone who helped me with my
dumb tar problem. I've looked in the SAG, Frisch's book, and a book
by Parker and they are all good for the basic and a few details but
they all leave out vitally important details like, "remember, tar
stips the leading slash so cd to your target's root (/ or wherever)
before untarring."

Am I just RT'ing wrong FM? It seems to me that backups are an
important topic with a fair degree of complexity and judging from the
other posts I read, many people have questions about this sort of
thing.

TIA! Also thanks again to previous responders.
