I bought two Celeron 500 CPUs a month or two back, 'cos they were very
cheap, with the hope of getting an Abit BP6 (dual Socket 370 board) to
house them.

However, it seems that the BP6 boards are now very hard, or impossible
to get hold of. I have had an order in with one or two places for at
least a month now, but no sign of the board actually showing up.

My question is, therefore: are there any other dual Socket 370
motherboards in existence?

Cheers,

Dave.

Edit /etc/hosts, something like this:

127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.43.5 draken.lkp.se draken

You might also want to edit /etc/resolv.conf

Slackware 3.1 is also known as Slackware 96. If you install from scratch
you might just as well get a recent distribution like
Slackware 7.1.

Which boot-disk did you use for installation? Which kernel did you chose
to install? What kind of CD do you have? What kind of mouse do you have?

> What should I do to make the CD-ROM and mouse work properly!!!???

You will need support in the kernel. As the installation kernel did
support your CD that kernel would be a good choice to select when
choosing kernel. If your mouse is serial I suppose that you already have
support for it and did some kind of misconfiguration like /dev/mouse is
pointing to the wrong file or /etc/XF86Config is using the wrong
protocol. If the mouse is PS/2 you will need support for this in the
kernel. When you have this support you will see a message about finding
the mouse at boot.

Unless you are a newbie you might prefer to compile your own kernel
instead of reinstalling with a pre-compiled kernel.

cd /usr/src/linux
less README

in short:

make menuconfig
make dep
make clean
make bzImage
cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /dev/fd0

Try to reboot with your new kernel from your new boot floppy. If
everything works fine, install it with LILO. (man lilo)

Subject: About the Linux Kernel
Date: Tue, 29 Aug 2000 20:33:30 +0100

Greetings,

I'm a nearly-total newbie to Linux, & I'd like to ask a stupid question:

I'm preparing both to upgrade my hardware & install Linux on my brand new HDD.
But I recently came to the Kernel Archives & I read these words:

Linux was first developed for 32-bit x86-based PCs (386 or higher).
These days it also runs on (at least) Compaq Alpha AXP, Sun SPARC
and UltraSPARC, Motorola 68000, Motorola PowerPC, ARM, Hitachi SuperH,
IBM S/390, MIPS, HP PA-RISC, Intel IA-64 and DEC VAX.

Does it mean that it doesn't work so well on a AMD-based PC ?

Thanks in advance,

Benoit Smith

Thanks everyone !

I tried yesterday to remove all my cdroms in the control panel/systems and I
reboot.
Now, I have only two cdroms (CDRW and DVD), but the system is still a little
bit unstable (maybe some traces of the old partitions are still present in
Win98). I will try to do some other tests and if this do not solve, I will
create two primary partitions on my disk and reinstall everything (this is not
too bad, it is a new system and nearly nothing is install except the OS').

Thanks !

145W?! Ye Gods, that's wimpy. I vividly remember fitting a tape streamer

the power supply failed with a FLASH-BANG!!. According to my (then)

I have done the opposite - share a printer on the linux box with the
iMac, and it involves running netatalk. I would imagine that the
opposite is also possible, set up the printer as shared on the fruity
computer, then try to get atalk to see it. You will need pap & psf
from the netatalk package to get this to work. Doing what you are
trying to do is probably easier than doing what I did.

This would probably work, as long as there was a way to easily set the
ip address of the usb/ethernet adapter. I would imagine that it would
appear to be an ethernet connected printer afterwards.

Maintaining a seperation of church and state along with a seperation
of girlfriends, printers and computers is usually a good idea.....

Um.. no. The AMD is a x86 compatible processor.

x86-based PC's in this case means AMD, Cyrix, and Insmell (er, Intel).

There is one I know of. MSI 694D (aka MSI-6321). It supports dual FCPGA and
PPGA processors. I have only heard about it. From reports from different
users there appear to be lots of trouble with this board running linux (NMI
exceptions).

Nope! I already had DCD301 while using Win98. The HP installation

Thanks Gene but I am not sure whether it is exactly the same problem.
My monitor is new (though I agree that's no guarantee) and I don't get
the same problem running Windows98.

If I tried a different resolution, do you think that may prove your
theory one way or the other?

Thanks for the input.

I have been using the HP internal IDE drive for a few years,
and it seems more than adequate. These drives seem to vary
in capacity between 2.5 and 5 BG or more. It is by far the
least expensive alternative as far as I can see.

Urgh. And that's why. The init string probably just doesn't
work for the Sportster.

Use minicom, and try a simple AT&F1 or whatever your modem's

I've used some of the older (4-gig) Barracuda models with Linux (DTC
SCSI controller based on the NCR 53C810 chip) without difficulty.

You might want to check the drive configuration, and see if the drive
is jumpered or optioned in a way which would cause it to _initiate_
the SCSI option-negotiation for wide and fast transfers. I believe I
recall that certain Linux SCSI-adapter drivers have difficulty with
this - their firmware isn't set up to handle device-initiated
negotiations.

If your drives are configured/jumpered in this way, try disabling
drive-initiated option negotiation. The Linux kernel drivers should
initiate the appropriate fast/wide negotiation when they're good and
ready to do so.

I know that the IBM Ultrastar SCSI drives come with the
drive-initiated negotiation feature disabled by default... possibly
some Seagate drives have a different default.
