There is no XServer for the 128 chipset yet. Sorry. There is however, (as
is so common in Linux, <G>) a workaround to get it up and running at this
webpage:
http://www.0wned.org/~cain/ragefury.htm
I have not tried it myself, but the author claims it works, so if follow
closely, it hopefully will. Good luck!

Best Buy has a great price right now on the Creative Labs 56K modem,
DI5665. I want to ditch my WinModem and make the leap to Linux. Will the
DI5665 work? If so, I'll go buy it. The other option I see is a $70
DI5601. Any help is appreciated.

Subject: OPL3-SAx PnP driving me crazy! (long)
Date: Tue, 15 Jun 1999 19:33:08 -0500

Hello-

I try to configure a OPL3-SAx plug'n'pray sound card, with no luck so
far. I first tried to use the driver as module, but sound.o wouldn't
load, with a weird error, that I couldn't make go away even after
recompiling the kernel, upgrading from 2.2.6 to 2.2.10, etc, so
eventually I built the driver into the kernel, and the error is gone
now. However, the card still needs to be configured with isapnp, and
that's where it fails. There are basically 3 configurations available
for the card, as reported by pnpdump, but the third is almost identical
to the first, so it doesn't make a difference. Here's what I tried as
isapnp.conf in the first place:

(READPORT 0x0203)
(ISOLATE PRESERVE)
(IDENTIFY *)
(VERBOSITY 2)
(CONFLICT (IO FATAL)(IRQ FATAL)(DMA FATAL)(MEM FATAL))

(CONFIGURE YMH0030/2156265473 (LD 0
(IO 0 (SIZE 16) (BASE 0x0220))
(IO 1 (SIZE 8) (BASE 0x0530))
(IO 2 (SIZE 8) (BASE 0x0388))
(IO 3 (SIZE 2) (BASE 0x0330))
(IO 4 (SIZE 2) (BASE 0x0370))
(INT 0 (IRQ 5 (MODE +E)))
(DMA 0 (CHANNEL 0))
(DMA 1 (CHANNEL 1))
(NAME "YMH0030/2156265473[0]{OPL3-SA3 Snd System }")
(ACT Y)
))

(CONFIGURE YMH0030/2156265473 (LD 1
(IO 0 (SIZE 1) (BASE 0x0201))
(NAME "YMH0030/2156265473[1]{OPL3-SA3 Snd System }")
(ACT Y)
))

(WAITFORKEY)

This one would fail with a i/o conflict at port 0x530, and after
booting, I would find in /proc/ioports, a "OPL3-SAx' at i/o 0x530-531
(?). No sound available though. I then tried the second configuration:
(READPORT 0x0203)
(ISOLATE PRESERVE)
(IDENTIFY *)
(VERBOSITY 2)
(CONFLICT (IO FATAL)(IRQ FATAL)(DMA FATAL)(MEM FATAL))

(CONFIGURE YMH0030/2156265473 (LD 0
(IO 0 (SIZE 16) (BASE 0x0240))
(IO 1 (SIZE 8) (BASE 0x0e80))
(IO 2 (SIZE 8) (BASE 0x0388))
(IO 3 (SIZE 2) (BASE 0x0300))
(IO 4 (SIZE 2) (BASE 0x0370))
(INT 0 (IRQ 5 (MODE +E)))
(DMA 0 (CHANNEL 0))
(DMA 1 (CHANNEL 1))
(NAME "YMH0030/2156265473[0]{OPL3-SA3 Snd System }")
(ACT Y)
))

(CONFIGURE YMH0030/2156265473 (LD 1
(IO 0 (SIZE 1) (BASE 0x0201))
(NAME "YMH0030/2156265473[1]{OPL3-SA3 Snd System }")
(ACT Y)
))

(WAITFORKEY)

This time, no error is reported at boot time, but still I don't get
sound, in /proc/ioports there's only the same OPL3-SAx, on 0x530 (?!?!),
and cat /dev/sndstat produces:

As per Sound-HOWTO, devices in parentheses means configured, but not
detected. Well duh! since these are not the PnP settings! How can I make
it work? Do I have to pass the correct parameters to the kernel at boot
time? If so, what's the syntax, because I couldn't find any info on
passing multiple i/o addresses to sound drivers (RTFM! I know! But
where?).

One more thing: at boot time, I get:
(..)
Sound initialization started
No PSS signature detected at 0x220 (0xffff)
Found OPL3-SAx (YMF719)
Sound initialization complete
(..)

All help highly appreciated. TIA

This may or may not work, depending on the drivers and the cards used.

The default setting for NE* compatible cards is IRQ3, which is
not a very bright idea , anyways. If you do have an ISA NIC,
change the settings by setting jumpers on the card or using isapnp.conf .
If it's a PCI card, then you'll have to convince your motherboard's
BIOS to give it a different IRQ (try CMOS settings and moving cards
around).

cat /proc/interrupts
and possibly
cat /proc/pci

My BIOS doesn't let me do that. I think I'm going to play with isapnp

Subject: IBM i1720 SOUND!!!!
Reply-To:
Followup-To:

Summary:

OK folks, after many trials, i finally got sound working on the IBM i1720!
The following are step-by-step instructions for Red Hat 6.0.

1. run, do not walk, to the ALSA web site:

     http://www.alsa-project.org/

2. download the alsa drivers, lib, and utils tarballs

3. tar xvzf the tarballs

4. in the drivers directory, go to the cards directory, and open the file
opl3-sa.c then look for the switch() logic in the function
   snd_opl3sa_detect()... (should be lines 183-186):

       case 0x04: /* YM719 - OPL-SA4? */
       case 0x05: /* OPL3-SA3 - Libretto 100 */

   immediately below, add the following:

       case 0x07: /* NeoMagic 256AV on i1720 */

(thanks to Troy Beukema <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> for the tip, but Troy,
your instructions and /etc/conf.modules file were incomplete!)

Save the file, then cd .. up and do:

   ./configure --with-debug=full
   make
   make install
   ./snddevices

5. Next, in the lib directory, do a:

   ./configure
   make
   make install

6. Next, in the utils directory, do a:

   ./configure
    make
    make install

7. Next, edit your /etc/conf.modules file (pico -w /etc/conf.modules), and
   add:

# ALSA config for IBM i1720
# uses the opl3sa driver
alias char-major-116 snd
options snd snd_major=116 snd_cards_limit=1
alias snd-card-0 snd-opl3sa
#
# the following should be one line! broken here with '\'s
#
options snd-opl3sa snd_port=0x120 snd_sb_port=0x220 snd_wss_port=0x530 \
        snd_midi_port=0x300 snd_fm_port=0x388 snd_irq=5 snd_dma1=0 \
        snd_dma1_size=128 snd_dma2=1 snd_dma2_size=128
#
# defines for OSS-lite compatibility
#
alias char-major-14 soundcore
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm1-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm1-oss

8. to load the drivers, do a:

# modprobe snd

9. Wait! you're not done... you now have to 'unmute' the devices! use pico
or your favorite text editor and type in:

amixer -c 1 master 125:125 unmute
amixer -c 1 pcm 125:125 unmute
amixer -c 1 cd 125:125 unmute
amixer -c 1 fm 125:125 unmute

10. Save the file with a name like "unmute," and do a:

# chmod +x unmute

11. Finally, to enable sound, do a:

# ./unmute

The ALSA folks are truly awesome for providing these sound drivers...
without these drivers, folks using the IBM i1451 or i1720 would not be
able to enjoy sound (the OSS drivers do NOT work)...

many thanks to all the StinkPad owners who have posted on the Linux laptop
page!

have a happy!

correctly with your serial device. Then switch it over.

Subject: What is "Bad DMA status"?
Date: Tue, 15 Jun 1999 08:45:37 -0400

When booting up the computer, I get a message that reads:

hda: bad DMA status: 0x65
hda: dma_intr: status = 0x50 {DriveReady SeekComplete}

I have looked for information about DMA and can only find out some
information about what DMA is, but not anything about error messages. What
does this error message mean and where can I get information about how to
correct it?

Subject: Troubles CD Writing with the Panasonic/Matsushita 7502
Date: Tue, 15 Jun 1999 23:51:25 GMT

I am having troubles copying audio tracks/CDs using my
Panasonic/Matsushita 7502. I have got it to where you can read audio
CDs and store them to the disk (using XCDROAST with CDRECORD 1.6.1), and
write them to a CDR with no errors, BUT when I try and play the CD on a
player there is now music or sound??? Has anyone encountered this?
Please help!!!

There is one...it's called Drive Image by PowerQuest. However,

You certainly can run RedHat-6.0 with this chip, as I am doing now.
Several people have posted XF86Config files for this setup recently.
I used one called XF86Config.TNT2 which works well
(though I had to use xvidtune to get the screen reasonably central
on my monitor).
Neither Xconfigurator nor XF86Setup created a good XF86Config for me.
